Do Developers think all Console owners have 50" TV's?

Yes I realize this is a wierd title, but I've noticed a strange (and EXTREMELY irritating) trend among several console games lately. While its not necessarily gamebreaking, it does make some games extremely difficult to play, or at least make it hard to tell whats going on.

What I'm talking about, is why the hell is the text in menus and HUD's on games getting so tiny?

And no, its not just my eyes, I own a 29 inch TV and sit maybe 5 feet away, so its not like I'm across the room. I also wear glasses that fix any vision disorders I have, so its not that my eyesight is to blame.

For those of you who have no idea what I'm talking about, go play Dead Rising on a normal sized TV(the first one, I'm not sure if the second one has this problem), it was one of the first games I noticed to have this problem. Try to read any dialogue between two characters in the story, or the menus, or even try to read the name of a weapon on the ground. Unless you are either 3 feet away from the TV screen, or own a TV the size of a Buick, your eyes will probably suffer severe strain. I had moments where I literally had no clue what was going on, because I couldnt make out the size 6 font scrolling along the bottom of the screen in the middle of a 50 zombie horde.

For a while, I thought the game was just a fluke, and went on to have games with writing that was able to be read without a microscope. Until, that is, about 2 weeks ago.

After hearing some friends talk about how awesome Bad Company 2 was, I decided to pick it up at gamestop. Upon loading up the game, I actually thought my TV was broken. Where it said "press > to start" (I assume thats what it says, I still cant make it out) there was merely a black line with white squiggles in it. On my 29" TV, it was maybe a centimeter wide, slightly larger than the words you are reading right now. How on EARTH am I supposed to be able to read that from 5 feet away, let alone 10 or 15? Not to mention if I had a smaller TV I would have had to break out a magnifying glass to make it out. This problem is only made worse in game, as menus, or in game subtitles are almost unreadable in the heat of battle. I almost took the game back just because I couldnt read any of the writing, even though the game was fun and I enjoyed everything else.

Once again, I thought it was a fluke, but when I downloaded the Crysis Beta and the Bulletstorm Demo, I realized it was far too real. Admittedly, Bulletstorm at least makes the Killshots easy to read, but the menus and subtitles were still small (maybe not Dead Rising small, but close) but the Crysis Beta seemed to have no excuse. Killstreak rewards, menus, player names, everything was all microscopic font.

What I have to ask is, why is this popping up more and more? Am I the only guy with a TV thats under 40 inches? Are these games designed with the PC in mind, and people dont realize that font that works fine on a computer monitor is too small for console? Is it laziness? Do they just not know? Is it just bad design?

And no, nothing is wrong with my eyesight. Games like COD, Halo, Left 4 Dead, Singularity, and many others had plenty large enough fonts their menus, so its not like its all games.

TL;DR Why is text in some console games so tiny that its almost unreadable? Have you noticed this, and if you do, does it bother you? Do you have ways to fix it, or are you forced to sit uncomfortably close to the TV? Do you own a large TV (something like 40 inches or larger) and it just doesnt affect you? Any other games you noticed that are guilty of this?

I really want to know if other people are noticing this or if I am just losing it. It's a really serious problem for me, and has been giving me serious headaches at times. And no, I dont have the room in my entertainment center for a bigger TV, so please dont just post "LOLZ GET A R3EL TV NOB"

I still have the TV I got for Christmas while I was in high school over ten years ago. Needless to say, I do a lot more PC gaming these days, and the on-screen text is a big reason why.

Have you got an HD TV? I just upgraded recently (I know, late adopter much?) and that fixed it for me. I now have a 22" HD in my room and sit about 3 feet away and it's perfectly readable.

I sometimes play games on a widescreen HDTV, but it's usually on a dinky little curved-screen TV. I think a few games are very hard to read on standard-size TVs, but most are fine. My advice is to learn which games to avoid if you can't play on an HDTV.

I sit on a couch roughly 5 to 6 feet away from the TV, although its standard def, I dont think thats the problem. Its pretty clear resolution, and up close it looks just fine. Its just the size of the print itself. At 29", my TV should be more than big enough to be adequate at that range.

To get an idea of what I'm talking about, walk about 6 feet away from this screen and read this post. This is what it looks like to me when I'm trying to play Dead Rising or Bad company 2.

As I rarely watch television (most of the available stations are saturated with reality shows) I didn't need to buy HDTV so I'm still using ol' 54cm CRT. It's funny that my PC monitor has bigger screen than my TV. But I agree with OP, once my friend got x360 I realized that more and more console games have tiny HUDs or microscopic fonts and it's painstakingly difficult to play some games.

I heard that Mass Effect can be almost unreadable on a Standard Definition TV.

OT: I think it's more that they are making games for high definition so small text is easier to read. My Console TV is 42" HD and my PC monitor is 22" (though I sit closer to my PC monitor).

For quite awhile, I had a fifteen year old, fifteen inch TV. BC2 was a fucking nightmare on that thing.

I can vouch for that. It seriously renders it unplayable on my tiny 19" TV.

well this is (kind of) making me feel better. At least I know I'm not crazy. But seriously, at least include an option so we can increase the font size. Or have a setting for standard Def TV's since they're still not completely phased out yet.

Didnt some of the old N64 and Playstation games have a widescreen as well as normal screen options for specifically this reason?

You only need to read it once, then you memorize it. If the cutscenes don't have any voice-over, well, then you're screwed. That's pretty much how I see it.

The largest TV in my house is a 30" crt screen, the old bubble style. I also do more PC gaming now, as it is almost impossible to play a modern console game on a SD tv, never mind a small SD tv.

Yeah this got on my nerves for a long, long time, especially since a lot of the games i enjoy have lots of text. It's unfortunate, but it seems that the game developers just assume everyone has a HD TV nowadays... just makes me glad i finally got one :D.

Oh, and the problem is with the definition of your TV, i had the exact same problem for a long time, and it made more than one game completely unplayable for me.

Getting a HD TV will instantly fix it even on fairly small screens, despite how it may seem that this isn't the problem, it really makes all the difference.

Unfortunately I just dont have the cash to buy a new TV. I'm in the process of restoring a classic car and saving up for a new Guitar as well, and I just cant spare the money for a TV...

I know, I've (tried) playing Bad Company 2 on a 32" Standard Def. TV. Don't ask me how it does it, but I guarantee you, that's your problem.

When I read your OP, this article sprang to mind [http://www.gamesradar.com/xbox360/vanquish/news/hate-playing-games-with-tiny-unreadable-text-then-your-eyes-will-love-vanquish/a-20100901155044310098/g-2010032517946867047]

Looks like your gonna have to bite the bullet and empty your wallet if you wanna read the games you play, buddy.

God, playing Lost Odyssey on my 27" CRT was absolute murder. Want to do anything at all in the menus? Ever? Better get really good at making educated guesses on the words. Only way I'm getting a new HD set in the next five years is if someone I know decides they don't want theirs anymore.

I've noticed this, although it hasn't been a common issue for me.

I remember Street Fighter 4 being massively guilty of this, that game has no reason to make the text small and yet I could barely read anything. I actually had to search for the move lists on google because I couldn't decipher a thing from the in-game ones.

I have to play my Xbox games on my computer's monitor for this exact reason. Playing an RPG is essentially impossible when the text is the size of the fine print on most TV commercials.
