Police Quest was a great help to me when I was younger, both in vocabulary and spelling, so yes certain games can help you out.

Idk, I just think even just reading stats from a RPG like dexterity, persuasion, cunning, wit, stamina, endurance, vitality, and the difference from intelligence and wisdom but I found that one out on my own ;) and yes ill look up the words so i know the difference :p

some games can defiantly have big words in them that one could include in there day to day vocabulary.
I'd suggest perfecting the small ones first.

I'm not usually this pedantic. It's just that it's a thread about games making your vocabulary better...

...and stuff.
i'm sorry but i am actually horrible at spelling but i'm like half dyslexic so thats what i blame it on. i can use the words but not spell them.

well it all depends what games you really play, some can increase your vocabulary, some your reasoning/understanding,some even can make you really good at math, lol. maturity is more of a thing you have to learn for yourself, games dont really help you in that category...but you only base on 3 things here. video games also help out with hand-eye coordination and reflexes, not to mention they increase how well you can concentrate.

so all in all,to answer your question yes,but only to a small degree.

And when I mean maturity I mean to see things from different angles and put each other in each others shoes to see the world in a different perspective so you approach things differently like you would with life as opposed to plowing on through as the average 190pound 5'7 kid that plays halo all day screaming into your headset!

Yes, it is argued many times over that games can have an impact on a child's interest in learning thus is much easier to teach them things. Sometimes this can happen on accident in games (your example of expanding your vocabulary) where the game assumes an intelligence/vocabulary above your own for their intended audience. Although, some games will inspire the audience about a particular historical event, type of logic, etc. Where they seek knowledge outside of the game or retain it better due to experience with the game in the past. For experience when I was in school, I had already knew about the leaders in Civ 1 and 2 so when they came up I already roughly knew of them and it made it much easier to retain knowledge. How many of you that watch Extra Credits will forever get every reference to a "Skinner Box"? Same thing.

However, that type of "learning" can be gained from any media and as well isn't teaching you anything in and of itself. Instead, merely striking a curiosity in you. All video games really offer in and of themselves is problem solving skills and maybe (MAYBE- again to stress it) general PC knowledge.

ehh it honestly depends i would say... (yes i know i don't capitalize or use apostrophes that often, but that's just because its the internet and i don't entirely care to hit that shift key whenever i say i)

this is against a lot of parental stuff and what not, but i played a lot of mature games when i was younger, and it basically forced me to become really good at reading/vocabulary/spelling to understand the plot of the jrpg's/rpg's/horror games that i played, therefore in the short term run it gave me more of an edge over a lot of my classmates, but in the present, i wouldn't say i'm any smarter/more intelligent than any of my classmates really, i do know a decent chunk of vocabulary over them still, but that's not anything to brag about.

so if you play more mature effective games when your younger, i would be inclined to agree, however me playing mature games now? no not really, i might pick up a new word or two every 6 months of playing new games, otherwise games are just a fun hobby now.

I wouldn't say they are likely to increase intelligence, problem solving ability perhaps but those arn't the same thing.
well most IQ tests rely on problem solving, pattern recognition, etc. as games make use of these mechanics constantly then there could be an increase in intelligence in those areas (would be interesting to do some research on that)

Remove the may, if you didn't have the paranthesis it would be, do games may increase, without the may it would make sense.
