Do many Westerners really dislike Japanese games for such shallow reasons as "anime"?

I don't like Japanese-styled anime/manga. I do not like playing games featuring such styles.

Does that make me shallow? No. It means that I like different things to you.

Deal with it.

From what little I've seen it's basically Conan in anime form. You have a guy who at his peak can wipe the floor with most human opponents and terrifies most people with his speed and strength going up against supernatural monsters that can throw him around like he's nothing. And while no man scares this guy the supernatural horrors do.

Very like Conan, except that the character doesn't seem to also be a womanizer.

does it have an ending that makes sense with the context of the story

Hate to break it to you, but I hear that every time someone starts talking about anime. Every time I see a posted pictures of characters, the guys tend to look like chicks, and the chicks look like jail-bait(and I am being generous with that description).

Well if you don't like the aesthetic, then you're not liking a significant part of the game. Though aesthetics are something that grow on you over time, but there's more to Japanese style games than just aesthetic differences. There's a lot of different cliches and cultural things that just put a lot of westerners off in a way I just can't understand, but that's mostly because I've watched anime all my life.

While putting off a game purely on aesthetic is pretty shallow, a game having that aesthetic usually means there's more things that'll put off westerners. And they just learned that "It looks anime" usually means that "kawaii desu ne, weeaboo galore" comes with.

Anime is its own genre.
No, just no. There is a HUGE variety of anime and to call it a genre would be like calling Video Games a genre, instead of a medium full of different genres.
No, it is. You know like the JRPG is a genre despite they are full of variety as well. It is a collective genre. The point is that they share commonalities with one another that is unique to them. It is a genre of style.

"Foreign Films" is a genre. It is a collective genre. Anime is a genre. So again:

Some people don't like horror movies yet that is not seen as superficial. Some people don't like anime and that is not superficial. They simply just don't like it. It isn't shallow or superficial any more than someone else's tastes who don't like say action flicks. Hell, I don't like parody movies.

It is a valid critique and I like anime. However, I don't like when they do stuff like the "big tear" or the cats on shoulders crap. I understand why those things exist, I just think they fail at what they are trying to do. I like others though (like exaggerated expressions and such) but I guess my golden rule for anime is: it needs to set a tone and stick to that tone, and many don't do that. Some will be all serious Cowboy Bebop style then go full on Speed Racer out of nowhere.

If this is a superficial complaint, then all matters of taste are superficial.

i haven't then again i just watch the show don't really talk to people about it. I'll say i like them but that's usually as far as i go. depends on what you watch different group have different style of drawing character. to be honest i much prefer them over this weird cartoon style that shows over here use. there are a few that don't use it but those are usually animated films

And?

The Japanese don't much like our games because it has our own art in it, the Chiseled Jaw, Stubbled, Model-type white male protagonist fighting cookie-cutter characters of varying other races and ethnicities.

My point I'm trying to make is that over in Japan, they have their dominant artistic style in gaming and media.

Over in the west, we have our own.

If you grow up knowing one thing, and are suddenly placed with another, some are slow to accept the differences.

Personally, I'll play any game as long is it's fun, has a good story and decent voice acting.

But yesm, I did get quite tired of JRPGs as they seem to mainly focus these days on, "Annoyingly voiced teenage protag groups up with annoyingly voiced teenage companions to take out antagonist."

Weeaboo: "You don't like anime or JRPG's? MINDLESS FPS DRONE!"

PS: The anime style you all know and love (or hate) came from Scrooge McDuck.

And as a gay man I can confirm that the character designs in anime ARE really faggy looking.

Seriously, that shit makes me feel homophobic.
1. No. The style has been around much longer than that. MUCH longer.

2. Stating your opinion as fact. You are the only person I've ever heard of to make a claim that the visual styles of all forms of animé make characters appear "gay".
Osamu Tezuka, the "Godfather of Anime," got the "big eye" look most if not all anime use today from Walt Disney properties such as Scrooge McDuck and went on to make Astro Boy.

And they do appear gay. So. Incredibly. Gay.
100% Irrelevant.

Manga has been around much, much MUCH longer than that. Animé is manga in motion. The art style is the same. One is moving, one is not.

To be blunt, my answer saves you some research, don't like it, do the research yourself and if you do it right you'll wind up in the same place if you do it right.
Has it occurred to you that the reason people are so dismissive of your posts is because they have done the research?

(Also, I always find that posting with an air of condescension works better when you spell words correctly.)
No, because if they had done it properly I already know what they would find. I take this attitude simply because it's really the only approach I can take at this point that doesn't involve argueing in circles.

My basic attitude comes from the simple fact that certain things are just correct, and people don't like them because of strongly held political, or social beliefs, that have more of a grounding in philsophy than reality. If I tell someone how it is, and they decide to disagree with me, it doesn't much matter if I provide links/start points for research/etc... I'm still going to get guff based on the source, or various circular arguements about it. I pretty much figure that if your taking the discussion seriously you can take the time to verify what I'm saying, and it won't take very long. If your not going to put in the effort,
nothing I'm going to say or show you will matter anyway.

As far as overall political positions go, I represent a tiny minority on this site, my attitude reflects that. People who aren't willing to take what I say seriously with all the flaming, trolling, and other antics and won't put in the time, aren't worth the time, so I increasingly say my piece and move on.

On this thread I spelled out the answer rather directly, people now have it, it's not really my fault if they can't handle, or don't like the truth. I'm hardly anti-anime, but I didn't take the track that the OP wanted which was to more or less knock people that don't like Anime, which is what they were at this point obviously fishing for, and what others visiting this thread came to see. I gave an accurate, and balanced answer, which while true is not what people wanted to hear. There isn't much more to it.

I enjoy anime. It's actually one of the reasons I love jRPGs. But mostly because I enjoy them as a whole. I find them fun and I enjoy the stories. But I do agree on the ridiculousness of the fact that they have a lot of underage protagonists. Like Jude in Tales of Xillia. 15 years old. Good lord. X_X

I'm not sure people understand some words so many have changed or just don't mean what people think they mean. even when it comes to the hate some people show anime doesn't really make sense anymore not the hate itself the reasons they come up with.

Anime seems really immature, over the top, unfunny, and uninteresting. What people consider "deep" in anime seems nonsensical, obscure, and contrived to me. I may like some of the art style, but a game that's makes as much sense as an acid trip with a plot doesn't really float my boat.
I rather like how over the top anime can get sometimes. Only anime can make eating a potato chip look EPIC!
