As a man, I find the pink stuff pretty annoying to be honest, and like it says in the article women have enough trouble being taken seriously in traditionally men-centric roles even if they're not doting around hot pink jackhammers.

I followed a link to another article by the same author about commercials that were condescending to women, and I was so insulted my mouth was literally agape with shock. Silly woman, driving cars is for men. Are you fucking kidding me? You have to check out this article if you found the last one bad.

Welcome to the state of advertising for the last century. Where have you been?

Here's the thing: those companies aren't out to sell "proper" drills, based on quality or attachments or anything like that. They are out to sell pink drills. Because, believe it or not, there is a market for pink products like that. Why do you think they are so common? There is a market for pink...well, everything. That is the fact of the matter. You aren't a part of that market? Well that's just fine. That means you won't be spending your money on impulse buying from those ads.

Also, Internet ads have been automatically personalized to your demographics for quite a while now. Surely you've noticed those ads that say "Find good places to eat in [Your Current Location Here]!" And on Facebook, the ads you see are based on your profile. Shows, people, and other things that you like or list on your profile all contribute to what ads you see. For example, I have "anime" listed under my Interests. So quite a lot of the ads I get have to do with anime. Sometimes they even go so far as to listing the names of the shows I like, and where to buy them.

Because of that sort of thing, I doubt your screen is going to get flooded with pink anytime soon. Yes, there is a market for those things, but it's a niche market. Not the majority. It's a fairly small demographic they are appealing to (I mean how many women do you know are interested in buying tool kits or guns online?) so just get over it. You aren't the only person in the world, you know.

So, in conclusion, no this is not patronizing or pandering. It's marketing. So just ignore the ads and move on.

It has gotten to the point where gay commercials can't even be aired on regular networks in some countries. Like this banned Heinz commercial, which was "too gay" for general audiences.

CAUTION: GRAPHIC GAYNESS DEPICTED.

Both genders are pandered to by advertising agencies. Commercials targeted at men show women as sex objects, and commercials targeted at women show men as bumbling idiots.

OT: I'm certain there's no female on the planet that wants to buy, say, d*** enlargement products :p
She could be buying them if she finds her boyfriend lacking.
Fun fact: Women don't really care about penis size as much as men think they do :p

...

But that would be HI-LAR-IOUS...

I found it ok until he turned around to kiss him - there was no real point to it... i mean, if it were a tv show, fine, but commercials cost a ton of money for every second, he could've just said 'Thank you darling' and left =/

(yes, i would say the same thing for a straight commercial because it would be JUST as pointless)

I laughed when I saw the pink guns!

I see an ad for a revolver called the "Pink Lady" in every issue of American Rifleman. And I saw the pink .22 rifle at the gun store I go to. Thought about getting it for my mom :p

From what I've seen, some women do want pink guns. They sell surprisingly well.

This is the truth. I'm a single, male SATCOM technician that lives in a quadplex. Yet, every time I go to a hardware store, or the pawn shop (HDMI cables never got so cheap), or any othe store that sells tools, I can't help but stare longingly at the saws.
I can't go by a hardware store without ogling the power tools. I want them in my life so bad.

There are differences between the sexes. People who are trying to sell something will adjust the product to fit the target demographic. It works. *shrug*

men frequently over-buy for their needs, we don't just want a drill, we want the most powerful goddamn drill in the store!

When I misread that, it sounded totally awful. Hint: It rhymes with "life".

I'm just glad that men usually get better deals on products specifically aimed toward them. Men's deodorant is usually cheaper per oz. than women's. That really goes for most any sort of male-targeted hygiene product.

The only time I saw a subversion of this was a nail salon that charged (50%) more for men. I was like "wtf", you don't even have to paint them but you're charging more? Are they charging by surface area or something?

Haha. Took me a sec to figure out how it could have been misread then I laughed.

I'm just glad I didn't misspell it or have some kind of slip. That would have been awkward.

Short answer: Yes.

Long answer: IIRC, some of the earliest forms of plant (or plant like, can't remember) life used green light, reflected red and blue, and was therefore purple. If that had remained the dominant form of vegetation, military forces would be wearing various shades of purple, and pink guns wouldn't be out of place. But to answer the OP, yes.

I wouldnt be surprised if more men buy those guns then women do, probably as gifts under the assumption that getting their wifes, girlfriends, gay lovers a pink gun will make them like guns more

Going by my limited experience in watching people by pink guns or use them women were buying them for themselves or had bought them for themselves. But then I've only seen it happen a couple times so that could mean squat and your right.

Eh, most women like pink. I personally think pink is the epitome of all evil, but that's a minority opinion among vagina owners.

dont you think its kind of sad than ANYTHING food related and targeted towards women..assumes that ALL women want to lose weight? seriously after thinking about it weight loss is everywhere..body image issues arnt just around for yougn women..it follows you your whole life, ok yeah theres a line between being healthy and all that...but it just seems that in soceity so much of a womens life is devoted to losing weight

it made me wonder, if that drink had a "appetite supressant" or somthing like that, but I didnt know and was drinking away like anything (as I do) then mabye I could become malnourished because I dont eat enough? mabye a little extrmeme but still

Ive never understood why

compared to other colurs pink actually just doesnt look good, and often tackey, I mean it can, but only somtimes (like a metalic pink gun or Ipod...)

I did however used to think the same thing about purple...untill I played saints row 2

How is assuming we all like cars, fire and guns not condescending, whereas assuming all women like pink is?
I find most "cars, fire, guns" commercials aimded at guys to be fairly tongue-in-cheek. By contrast, I find commercials directed at women to be mostly straight-forward about the product.

It's an interesting topic because it's borderline sexism with presumptions about the gender... but it works.

If I were to target, oh I don't know, Batman The Dark Knight to a gender neutral audience, it might be the morally right thing to do, but smarter marketing towards a broader male audience sells better. I mean you know those trailers with the big explosions, the juxtaposition of sound levels and the excessive use of "MANLY" colours? It's not a coincidence they don't use that stuff for Eat Pray Love. It's because whether we like it or not, people lean towards stereotypes subconsciously. In a perfect world, this "women like pink" stuff would be outright misogynistic, but the fact that we still hold many ideas about masculine and feminine concepts in our heads proves that it's not patronising.

Let me give you the simplest of examples.

Mainstream skirts for males. Why not?

What's up with your gender and yogurt? Seriously, my TV would have me believe that 30% of what women eat is yogurt. Do women really need that much help being "regular"?

theres no reaosn why not..men have worn stuff similar to a skirt in the past..its all about trends and culture really, right now its just not common in our culture, like it wasnt common in roman culture for women to have power

in fact wasnt it back then..like early AD times pants were considered unmanley? but came into vouge because of horse back riding and cold wearther? I dont know...its interesting that pants didnt become acceptible for women for a much longer time (perhaps because they spend less time riding horeses and more time cooking)
