Searched the forums for a thread like this, but couldn't find one.

Since i couldn't be arsed to play the Assassins Creed 2 "sequels", i wondered if i have to play them to understand the plot of number 3? I haven't bought it since i thought i had to, but if i can jump right into number three i think i'll buy it.

Any thoughts?

I think there's a lot of plot stuff for Desmond and the modern day Assassin's but that's about the extent of it. I haven't played the AC2 sequels either and I'm not very interested to be honest. Constantinople sounds interesting but the additional features to the gameplay (tower defense and, training up recruits...or buying upgrades...?) just doesn't sound very appealing to me.

There's plot points around Desmond (like the introduction of an entirely new character), but other than that, no.

And it's not like the Desmond stuff is really so interesting that you can't just look it up online. He's in a coma in one of them. Not that you'd be able to tell the difference in his personality.

Well to me Brotherhood was like slamming my head in a door so I didn't bother with Revelations. I think it should be fine as long as you don't care too much about Desmond's story...

Assassin's Creed games sort of have two story arcs, one set in the modern day world, and the other set in whichever historical period you're playing in. The vast majority of the story is in the historical period, but it's worth playing the other games as (a) they're all better than AC III, and (b) you won't miss out on the bigger picture.

If you care about the story, I'd suggest playing two and brotherhood. Revelations fleshes out Altair's background but it's not that important.

I recommend all of them if you want to understand the story, it's very convoluted and full of wtf moments though.

Not really but It may make the experience better.

Though to me AC2 is the best of the series and one of my favourite games this gen.

I haven't played the sequels but I live with a bunch of people who trumpet how amazing they are from the rooftops. Based on what they told me I think I would have enjoyed AC3 a lot more if I had played the spinoffs but at the same time then I would have blown hours of my life wading through the hours of the AC2 sequels. Although playing as Altair and seeing how the Assassin's developed between 1 and 2 sounds more interesting to me than most the the AC story I have already experienced. So that's a plus.

Bad news, you only play as Altair for about 20 minutes in total.

OT: I'd say play them simply because they add more to the franchise as a whole. There are some sections in the past that will be brought up in AC3 but if you don't really wanna spend 20 hours on the games and want to jump straight into 3 then you shouldn't be too lost. Oh, and just a heads up, the tower defence really only happens 3-4 times in game depending on how fast you play (I finished it in a week and only got 3 of them).

You need to play AC 2 because it's the best game in the series. The story is rather forgettable, though. You probably wouldn't miss much if you just skimmed through the Wiki summary.

I got to the series late but have been blowing through them over the last few months in spare time.
Assassin's Creed 1 is so-so, I'd skip it
Assassin's Creed 2 is a gigantic improvement and really fun, it's story is crazy and weird and if you 100% it then you get some crazy extras
Assassin's Creed Brotherhood contiues right from the end of 2 and is fun but not nearly as intriguing as 2
Assassin's Creed Revelations, I haven't finished but is so far better than Brotherhood, and on par with 2.

It really depends on how much time you want to spend and how much money you have. If ou have plenty of both, my vote is to start at 2 and play through Brotherhood and Revelations.

A friend of mine just bought a PS3 with the ACIII bundled. He has absolutely no idea what's going on in the framing sequences.

I've played all the games. I've got almost no idea what's going on in the framing sequences.

ACIII's main story is 100% self-contained, so if you can look past your utter bafflement with Future Desmond's story, you'll be fine.

All you need to know is what happens to Desmond in those two games, and then you only really need to know what happens to him in Brotherhood. Revelation is all about him trying to solve what happened to him at the end of Brotherhood. Reading a plot outline would sum everything up just fine. In fact, reading one my sum things up better than the actual games if you ask me.

Assassin's Creed 3, is a mess. AC2 is much better. Honestly, it was hard to enjoy the story in Ass Creed 3 because of its lack of focus. I reviewed the game:http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.401201-Poll-Why-Havent-I-Played-Assassins-Creed-3

so there's my full thoughts on it. Lots of people seem to think it's one of the best games ever made, to which I can only say, UGHHHH!

The story will be very confusing if you don't play the previous iterations, and even then it doesn't make a whole lot of sense. I suggest you at least play AC2.
