I love watching hockey and playing hockey, and I know quite a few peeps who like all the mainstream ones too (such as football and rugby). When I was young little geekling though I hated sports (watching and playing), its something I've kind of grown into.

For many people, sports DO matter.
People believe they matter. That isn't even close to the same thing.

No matter who plays who in which stadium, no matter which teams are victorious, no matter if the game is rained out, or a star player is injured..... The sun will come up tomorrow, and, with *very* few exceptions, life will be unchanged. Hence, sports don't matter.

I'm well aware of the commercialism of sports. That's a big part of what I dislike about them. Pointing out a single example where rampant commercialism was of benefit does not justify said commercialism.

I dislike team sports, really. I also don't see a point in following anyone's career, so I've never been a "fan" of any sport. Call me antisocial... it wouldn't be a completely incorrect assessment.

Still, I sometimes get a kick out of fencing (I'd love to see a return of fencing to first blood), martial arts competitions, and many other sports pitting one contestant/combatant against another.

Football.

The kind where you use your feet yanks whaahahahahaha-*cough* sorry couldn't help my self.

Anyways, I really enjoy football (the real one), because the action never stop until it goes out of bounds or someone gets kicked in the nuts.

Gridiron - Stops everytime someone gets tackled with the ball. - pffffffffffffffffft.
Rugby - Same deal if only for a short time.
AFL - The action only begins when someone drops the ball and most of the players on the field start scrambling to get their hands on it and kick it to their teammates.

Nice. Would you like sweeping generalisation A, or sweeping generalisation B?

Some nerds do not have any interest in sports. Some follow sports. Some play sports. Some do both. Some of those sports are popular. Some are not. I don't know what you were expecting, I haven't met nearly enough nerds to have a statistically significant sample.

I don't play sports. I do a bit of MMA. I don't follow any sports, I have a vague knowledge of tennis players and a vague knowledge of sumo. It's not because they're boring, or because I'm unfit, or...'because' they're popular. It's because I have other hobbies. I can do well at and enjoy sports. Or I can do well at and enjoy videogames. The latter appeals to me more.

And as a closing note, as if anyone seriously avoids sports for the sole reason of them being 'mainstream'. I doubt many people, let alone nerds, are that shallow.

There isn't a single sport that I'm interested in. Even the sports that people argue over like NASCAR, Bowling, Professional Wrestling, I don't like any sports. I wouldn't call myself a nerd though since I think it takes a particularly big one to call gaming a sport and I'm sure a lot of people will use that as their loophole answer. I am an American though so I grew up trying to find the appeal in Baseball (a sport that we Americans seem to have given over to the Japanese), Football (which we call Soccer and really...I don't see the point), Football (which is more like hold-ball), etc. Golf though would be the epitome of pointless and boring for me when it comes to sport. Why are athletes paid so much money by the way? A lot of them seem to range from unpleasant to, downright shitty people. Not all obviously but someone like Micheal Vick doesn't exactly earn his untold millions as far as I've seen.

edit:
according to CAPTCHA The Queen of England lives in North Korea...that may need some looking into...

I enjoy sports, but not enough to follow them routinely. I dislike the looks I get from people when they note that I don't have shit memorised.

It rivals the looks I get when I say I don't follow "So you think you can marry a supermodel's dog."

It's hard to enjoy playing something when you're shit at it. At least in my experience. Which probably dampened my enthusiasm for it.

I don't really think you can make a broad generalisation about nerds and sport.

I'm a nerd by most definitions and I really don't enjoy sports, participating or watching.

When it comes to playing, I'm clumsy, uncoordinated and probably my biggest problem, uncompetitive. In school when we had compulsory sports classes, I just didn't care if my team won or least, so I only put in minimum effort.

When it comes to watching sports, I just find them dull. The problem I have is that once you've seen enough games, you've practically seen all that sport has to offer and every game is going to be pretty much the same as far as I can tell.

I used to find it hilarious that my dad could watch a game of cricket or football (Australian rules) from several years ago that the sports channels were re-airng for whatever reason, and think that it was a game from the current season.

I enjoy running and working out, hockey has always been fun and paintball is a blast if you can call that a sport. I used to play rugby too, but every time I took down a big guy they'd stamp on my face and I got banned for kicking the crap out a guy for doing it.

I love playing and watching sports mainly football but I like others too. I possibly love football more than videogames *gasp*. I mean if the choice is between playing/watching a match or playing a videogame, football wins every time.

I'd love to enjoy sports, but I don't. Never did, never will. Be it a sport where you run after a ball or a sport where you can hurt each other but not really, I never liked sports. The only, ONLY sport I'd like to do sometime is archery, but that's mainly because there's little competition and not that much physical effort in it.

I dont like sports but I enjoy work outs. I see games and sports that involves teams and scoring points to be boring and pointless. But working out and attaining a strong body is beneficial to a person.
Also boxing and mixed martial arts are interesting for me because it proves brute strength which I admire.

I like basketball. But I rarely see it because I live in Norway and rarely play it because Norway...
I don't really care for any other sport though. but to be fair, I haven't really seen a lot of sport.

Neither me or my friends like watching sport, and we are nerds, but it's probably because our similar interests keep us together.

I used to be into fencing, though, but I didn't like watching it or anything like that and didn't follow it all that much. I just enjoyed poking people.

Also, my father is totally a sports-nerd, but he doesn't identify as a nerd, and isn't really thought of as such. But he has made a career of very nerdy study of trivia and data as a sports-journalist.

If he was into, let's say biology in that way, people would call him a nerd.

I'm pondering this question as I listen to my oldest brother clearly enjoying (American) football, a sport which I am bored to tears by 99% of the time.
I never walked into school or work and said "Hey guys, how bout them Giants?". Growing up in a rural town, pretty much all anyone talked about was sports, so I was usually quiet and off in my own world for these talks.

But that's not to say I don't like sports. I prefer rugby to football, hockey to baseball, and MMA to basketball. When the World Championships for judo comes on, I watch with rapt attention.

So what do you guys think? Do us "nerds" not like sports, or do we just like different ones?
My only problem with sports is that the players in most sports are paid insane amounts of money and that it gets way too much attention. I get why people like sports because it's fun and it's about the competition, what really gets to me though is that I know some guys who like sports who love mocking me for getting excited over a new videogame or buying comics but won't except that to me their just as weird for getting insanely angry because their sports team lost. You didn't lose, Manchester did get the fuck over it.

Also it gets way too much coverage, it confuses me why scientists discovering something like the Higgs Boson gets fuck all coverage compared to "These guys kicked a ball into a goalpost/over a fence into a hole a bunch of times!" I know it's important but come on those scientists have dedicated years of their lives to discovering the Higgs Boson don't you think it's a little insulting to be overshadowed by people who continue to do the same thing every year.

I don't like any Olympic officially recognized sport or what have you except for Swimming.

That's not to say I don't like physical activity though.
I love paintball/Laser Skirmish, any type of free-form sword duel and dodgeball.

Not really what's counted as sports, but I often feel more tired after 15 minutes of laser skirmish than I do after an entire sports class at school, or a training night at swimming [Though the latter doesn't really count as unless its a race I work on cruise control, rather than actually trying].

So I suppose that despite being an active, popular, social individual, the fact that I pay video games makes me a nerd.

The term is an anachronism if you ask me, but the answer to your question is that yes, I do like sports, I like Fencing and Kung Fu.

Mainstream sports rather bore me.

I enjoy PLAYING soccer. I kick ass in defense. A lot of ass.
I enjoy karate sparring. Kumite, ************.
I enjoy watching basketball. Also quite a bit, Greece has a pretty good team.

What I would also like to try is Hockey matches. I hear penguins are good.

On the other side of the spectrum, I find myself attracted to watching SC II matches.
