All I can say is, I'm glad that they don't actually die in the game (especially of old age or anything). Imagine spending HOURS to get a pokemon to level 100 just to have a message pop up saying "Charizard is getting too old to battle. Time to put him down! =)"

If you recall in Pokemon FireRed version, there was this monument in the Sevii islands, erected for some flighty broad's steelix. She gives you the TM for Facade if you placed a Lemonade on it.
Not to mention the many other Pokemon graveyards scattered around the various games.

Someone really needs to make a Pokemon zombie movie... that would be awesome.
I will answer the call. It'll be super serious and will feature loads of the ideas beiong discussed in this very thread. AND IT WILL BE AWESOME!

OT: I think a game where they could die would be an interesting idea, but when it comes down to it it would be one massive pain in the ass.

Lets say that you barely make it out of a battle in one piece, your level 70 Feraligatr or whatever (which was originally your starter pokemon) only has like 6HP left. You go into the long grass to take cover when some little crappy thing comes out hits it once and it dies. The pokemon you've had since the start of the game just dies. You would be pissed but at least it would be realistic right.

I always have to correct myself when I play and say that I won't be killing it when I defeat it I will just make it exhausted and faint because Pokemon NEVER EVER die.

I had this very thought as a child. I didn't sleep well that night.
Did it not bother you that you were basically cockfighting/dogfighting? I find it odd that a PokeDeath bothered you, but the fact that you were physically enslaving these creatures and forcing them to do your bidding and maim/maul other living creatures didn't cause your unease.
Both thoughts occurred on the same day. I was thinking about how cool it would be if pokeymanz were real and I had one of my very own- oh...shit.

As to the issue of food, I just figured it was a cannibalistic society. When a trainer has no more pokemon, they are vulnerable. They need to get to the nearest poke center quickly before a roaming chef find them and prepares them as a meal. I liked to think that all those kids in Veridian forest were made into appetizers later on.

Charizard used fly! But he broke a hip! It's not very effective...

If the shows and games worked on a semblance of reality, then yes they would. seeing as they don't, no pokemon don't die. On screen at least.

This also raises the question of ghost type pokemon. I mean, were they always that way or are they dead pokemon who came back as a different kind?
Quite sure the first ghost-like pokemon(haunter and the one before/after it, can't remember their names since haunter is fucking awesome) are described to be sentient gas, which makes about as much sense as having that world still populated by humans considering all the extremely aggressive pokemon, one half being capable of effortlessly destroying trees while the other half attacks with a few dozen friends.

Pokemon do die, it seems someone has already mentioned Charmander's tail.
The issue of whether or not Pokemon are edible has come up before, this is it's shining conclusion.

Ok, I do know it's been like... 8 years since I last watched the series on TV... And yeah, I played most of the games, up till the one for Game-cube (which I played for about an hour, got bored and then never again).
But since Pokemon Heart Gold and Soul Silver, my mind has been wandering over this stupid thing...

Do Pokemon actually die?
They can die, of course they die.. its not even a question i asked myself..but the game/show are so ridiculously "kid-friendly" with a layer of stupidity on it its rarely mentionned and shown even less.

I think Kubone use the skull of his dead mother or someting. So.. how come the race still exist is beyond me.

Yes, they die. Otherwise how would carnivorous PKs whould eat? Immortal herbivores that reproduce too much would ruin the ecosystem.

What meat would the human eat? Everyone know that the cuter the PK is, the tastier they are.

Human mortality isnt even mentionned in the game/anime AFAIK, no human get torn to shreds in the wild.. ever.

THose who dont make much sense are the legendaries, since (some, all?) are gendreless and cant reproduce... and are easily defeated/captured. So as "legendaries" they are pushovers, they should deserve the title by being litteraly impossible to defeat or something.

Im one who think the setting of "Pokemon" as it is now is rotten, but it would be better if it was taken seriously in a world that makes sense.
