It made so much money they are going to make it.

There is no, "do" or "should" it's only, "when"

yup we do! when the film ended i wished i was longer.
Long Stu is loooong?

On-Topic: If i remember right he already had sequel storylines written out so it should hopefully not be one of those horrible tacked on money grubber sequels.

I didn't particularly like the movie, so I don't care, but they hinted at some stuff in there, that made me go "Saving it for the sequels, huh?". Something hinted at the past of the Na'vi.

I bet the second movie has Jake find out that in the past Na'vi used to be a technological society, but after almost destroying the planet, they learned to live in harmony with the nature and whatever.

I say "yes"
but if he killed Jake or Neytiri I would never forgive him.

I would even watch it if he made a 2 hour movie about the wildlife of Pandora.

I can't really imagine what they could possibly do next other than have the PMC come back and kill everything. Hopefully they'll find a better direction to take it in, though. Maybe it could switch genres or something? Everything I can think of right now would be utterly laughable.

The question is: Can the story go anywhere from here?
OF COURSE it can! How could such a solid basis as the search for unobtanium not keep going? We NEED to know!!

no not really, the first was a novelty because it had a unique look and a big budget and it won't be as good as the first because that novelty would have worn off.

Yes, I would say the world he created deserves to be fleshed out more over at least one film, and probably over the three sequels that he claims to have buzzing around in his head.

Do we need to be asking this before this one is even out of theaters?

Alright, fine. Do we need a sequel. I say no, because less James Cameron is always better.

God no. The film was fine with it's average plot polished up with fantastic visuals and unusual attention to detail. If you let that mediocre plot fall into "sequel to mediocre plot" you're dealing with a high chance of Matrix Syndrome.
...Well, at least by that time visual effects will have developed even further and the budget for said effects will have tripled thanks to its success. We might have enough pretty effects to sedate us into indifference.

I read somewhere that there are two other moons orbiting the big planet. Im guessing each sequel will be set on one of those

You know, I was really disappointed with Avatar as a sci-fi work. Woulda probably been a lot more interesting (and realistic) if the Nav'ai weren't already pretty much human to begin with. I mean, I get how it's hard to relate to characters that you don't think you could have a go at in the sack, but come ON. Sci-fi isn't just social commentary, it's "what if" scenarios that make us question. Would everyone have been so "it's wrong to kill all the blue people" if they had been hideous freaks with translucent carapaces and like, I dunno, more legs in all the wrong places? It's not hard to identify with blue tiger-people. I mean, you kinda HAVE to cause they're so obviously people. I mean, make it hard to accept! Make them scary as hell so when the protagonist finally joins them it means something! (hey, I just realized, sorta like District 9, eh?)

Also think they coulda done a lot more with the avatar concept (like having him disconnect from the machine but still have the Nav'ai version of him active and they end up fighting on opposite sides or something weird like that) but whatever.

Aaaanyway, for the next one I suggest Alien vs Predator vs Avatar vs Prawn: Bipedal Deathmatch!

They're really making an Avatar sequel?

What the hell will it be about? The story can't go anywhere from there.
Agreed. Also, I think it is way to early to make a sequel for Avatar.
