Hm, i guess i have always thought of tali as some sort of hot foreign chick, and seeing what she really looks like might make her less foreign to me, or it might make her even more foreign, so yeah, it could be a bad thing,

but as i'm sure as others have said, we've got to see a quarian face eventually,

the Quarian homeworld will be visitable, but remember, the Geth have taken it over, and as Legion makes clear, the geth aren't enemies, only the heretics. that being said, I'd expect to go there to recruit the geth as support in the Reaper war.

edit: also, remember that Tali points out that even if they took back their homeworld at this point, they'd still need the suits and to re-adapt to the atmosphere, so again, i wouldn't count on seeing any faces.

Interesting. I could only consider romance on my renegade playthrough because I figured a renegade Shepard would be less bothered about the health implications of getting Tali out of that cute little suit of hers. If you thought Tali's reactions to Shepard were cute, her intercepted posts in the Shadow Broker dlc are worth reading

I stayed true to the blue gal in my main game- thankfully Bioware eventually decided to reward my loyalty :).

Yeah, that thought did cross my mind when I realized the Paragon option was to turn her down. But I didn't want to hurt her feelings and she only got the sniffles, so it all turned out okay :D

Why don't the Quarians just have see-through visors?

I mean they're able to have advanced bio suits, but, can't make a visor that shows their faces. >:l

Stuff like that just irks me a bit, and, I'm not even that big a fan of Tali.

This, if the normandy can have windows, I think they can make a clear visor that is sturdy enough. It is matter of developer choice.

1. It adds mystery, you don't know REALLY what they look like, even if ME1 had a little more to show of the face.

2. It saves $, it is much much cheaper to make models using a helmet than to create a face, both in polygons/performance and in actual labor. The same reason you have never seen a female krogan or turian, even though in the turian case it is mentioned that they serve in the military and have no in story reason to not be seen (where krogan you might accept that females are guarded commodities)

If were to start from a "love her for her brains" position, then we could reach the conclusion that people like tali despite not knowing what she looks like, rather than because they have imagined her as being particularly attractive; and that therefore they may forgive what may be considered a suboptimal appearance.

In my opinion, a large part of the reason tali is so well-liked isn't that her appearances are mysterious, but that she is one of a very few (squadmembers who wasn't a professional badass before being recruited; and that consequently, her character has more depth -- she had a life and personal considerations outside of the the current mission even before the 'loyalty mission' mechanic was introduced. In short, she feels more real than the other characters.

I want to know what the quarians look like, though since tali has never been my romantic interest I may have less invested in the character than others. Mostly I'm hoping they look like an artist's concept I saw one time.

EDIT: Google image search is fast and helpful and OH GOD MY EYES. Let's see if embed works.

I can dig it.

It's all better in my head movies though.

Hm.........I guess that sense. Why use manpower on something that, most likely, wasn't intended to have been shown? Oh well....

But, now that I think about it, what do the Volus look like?

Allright so amidst all this fuss about ME3 being delayed until next year, I decided to re-install ME1 and ME2 on Steam, and play through the games again.

Now, since I HATE spoilers, I haven't been browsing the net for too much info on ME3, but evil search engines on Google and the Escapist, has lead me to the info that a certain loveable Quarian will be making a comeback in ME3. And no I am not talking about Qip-Qip or whats his name. Rumors has it, that we will finally see what the Tech-savy race looks like in ME3, as their homeplanet has been confirmed as a visitable location in the game.

Now Tali is by far one of the more "normal" characters BioWare has presented to the masses, but also one of the most intruiging. Why? No one knows what she LOOKS like (except Shepherd), so her entire character is almost build around actions and personality - and a very tight spacesuit, that only hints at the physilogical nature of the non-obese Quarian female. And in my opinion this is what makes her a very great character. Now, I am not talking solely romance here, but what makes Tali so engaging as a character, is human curiosity.

It is by far also her biggest flaw. Think about it. Will Tali really be that intresting a character once we, hypothetically, learn that she is in fact a humanoid spacenewt-ish amphibian, or a feather covered birdwoman, with a bad skinrash? I mean this revelation has the chance of ruining the players commitment and intrest in the Tali character completely? I mean in terms of romance, most other BioWare female romanceable characters (maybe except Ashley Williams, and all the males) have had plenty of cleavage to show. In Dragon Age, you could basicly undress every female, and Morrigans dressup isn't exactly hiding things, and although Morrigan, Lelliana and Wynne had exactly the same body despite background history and well....age, not much were hidden from eyesight if you wanted to. Basicly there were plenty of gender charactaristics to be hinted at, and while all three had very distinct and different personalities, looks also played a part in your judgement of the character. However in Mass Effect, everybody wears layers upon layers of spacewear, and that leaves more to the imagination, and a larger emphasis on personality (in my opinion).

Now on the romance front, Tali was very intresting because her looks are mysterious, and you only have her personality and actions to go on when you determine wheter you want to bang spacesuits with Jack, Miranda or Tali. Imagine the moment you learn about her looks, and suddenly decide that her looks ruined YOUR subjective idea of Tali. Some might say "could be worse", while others might consider breaking up and in despair try to engage a romance with Grunt or Legion, simply because her looks, and the mere thought of "it" engaging in sexual intercourse resent you so much.

My point is, if Tali doesn't live up to your subjective expectations, she has the chance of becoming a very average character. She would go from great to average (imo). Now I might be overreacting here, but I just think that the fact that Shepherd - the character you play - decides to be with Tali based entirely on the relationship they've developed through the two games, without Tali ever showing her real face, is a really really, well, romantic thought and builds emphasis on the fact that female characters in computer games can have more than looks in their writing, character and concept.

To me, Tali represents that you can make intresting and engaging female characters, without showing huge cleavage and tons of skin. Hell, in my eyes she is only beaten by GlaDos from Portal - who is a computer.

What do you guys think?
I can kind of see your point, but I think I'd rather see what she looks like. I'm glad it didn't happen in ME2, and it's an intriguing mystery to be sure. But it's the old Chekov's Gun principle: Bioware has gotta pull the trigger on this mystery eventually, preferably at the end of the series. Unless of course ME is gonna turn into an MMORPG or something, but that's beside the point.

Besides, even though I'm by no means a regular watcher of the stuff, the anime version of ME due to arrive next year excites me far more than an MMORPG or CoD style shooter. Just saying :)

Hahahaha, Tali assumed direct control :)

I like the character because of its pros and cons, she can be a mechanical genius but she is also a hard head and a bit silly when it comes to the geth and the quarians. She wants to do the right thing but she has problems when it comes down to the big picture.

I think Tali is one of the characters that is growing up as the game goes on from being a young adult on her pilgrimage to a esteemed member of the flotilla (they give her high risk assignments because of her expertise) and if you take the paragon route with her she starts to get into better terms with Legion. And that growth is what makes her such a good character imo.

And no, removing her mask would not spoil the character to me, though I agree that she would lose the mysterious vibe around her... But I am still curious !

I'm pretty sure I can summarize your argument with about a thirty-five second clip.

From 6:07 to about 6:42 [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H-lkoEbg8Qc#t=6m07s]

And to address your topic. No, I don't want to see Tali. I don't want to see another quarian. I don't want to be told even the slightest thing about quarians, past what we have been. The more I don't know, the more I can imagine. The more I can imagine, the better I can imagine she is.

Done.

OT: I don't really care what she looks like, she will always be that childish character from ME2 that reminds me of my sister. That's probably why I'd never romance her as well...

Funnily enough, she only got the sniffles when you turned her down too ;-)

Its a pity it was pretty much fixed that way. It might have seemed more of a 'role playing' decision instead of a 'get the paragon points' decision had Bioware not erected numerous pointers and a gigantic sign saying 'if you want to play paragon, do NOT boink the Quarian'.

[saves ME3 morality system rant for appropriate thread]
