I always seen Luke as a mcguffin for the original star wars films, i never found him interesting or useful in anyway to the movies, he is a person whos just there and keeps the plot moving; kinda like Francise Reynaud wife in Chocolat or the brief case in pulp fiction

But Mark Hamil is great, the voice for the Joker and many other cartoon villains, kinda ironic

Hes alright. Just too dull. No real emotion, and pretty predictable. He just does what most heros do. Starts bored wth no real choices to make, gets a little shove from someone, and then makes constantly rightous and selfless choices. Not once did I think he would refuse the chance to help someone over himself.

I hate to sound anal, dude, but the prophecy was that Anakin would destroy evil...and he did...after a long time, Luke was not a part of any prophecy, and in Empire Strikes Back Luke gets his ass handed to him.

Anyway I always liked Luke better than Anakin.

Oh and they stuck Haden Christenson into the end of Return of the Jedi in place of the old Anakin via CGI...WTF?!!

In an uncharacteristically girlie way, I had a huge crush on Luke before I had a crush on Han. Girlieness aside, I do like Luke. We see his struggle through the whole series as the main protaganist. He goes from a whiney, frustrated kid, to a centered Jedi ready to give his life for the forces of good. You have to respect that.

OUR SHIELDS CAN'T HANDLE LAZARS OF THAT MAGNITUDE!

Other than that Luke is cool

The original trilogy just wouldn't have worked without the character. That said, there are times where I find him... trying (meant as no disrespect to Mark Hamill). I think it's more the unlikely transformation being the reason I'm not that keen on him as a character...

I like Luke just fine, he's the classic "Hero with a thousand faces" archetype moved into the Space Fantasy Stage that is Star Wars. He was deliberately constructed as an archetype, hence why he's a very "cliched" character.

The thing is, his "cliche" is part of his appeal, Obi-wan, Darth Vader and The Emperor are JUST as cliche'd, they are just more tolerable characters for all you bitter, jaded people out there. I hate to tell you this, but Star Wars is a FAIRY TALE IN SPACE, IT ISN'T FOR JADED, BITTER PEOPLE.

Han Solo is a better character by far, and the lack of a Han Solo is what hurts the Prequels more than anything in my opinion, but Star Wars would not have worked without Luke, it wouldn't have been the same story.

Mark Hamil is awesome.

As for the character, we saw him develop over the three movies. From teen to rebel fighter to eventual Jedi. We saw him grow up. He was a good character who developed well over time.

I however hated what they did with Darth Vader's past, that's an example of bad character development.

In general, I'm apathetic towards Luke.

I mean, yes, he's cliched, and yes, Hamill's acting was little wooden, but I did, and still do, find myself rooting for him. In my book, this cancels it all out.

To be honest, I think he could be replaced by any other generic action hero and the films would work out pretty much the same, provided the hero is bland.

However, I have the watched the debatably non-existent prequel trilogy and have come to the conclusion that Luke is better than pre-Vader Anakin. I don't really think there's any contest.

He was more interesting in the Expanded Universe.

Since, you know, he had a personality beyond "Do the right thing".

i hate frodo.
You poor creature.
keep in mind i only saw the movies so i'm ignorant. but, why be a jerk to sam! i guess stress is stress...
Finally, someone else thinks the same way. Frodo isn't the real hero, it's Sam! Who carried the person who carried the ring up a damn volcano? Sam! Who suspected Golum to be the evil gimp he really is, only to protect his friend? Sam!

Sam Sam he's our Hobbit, if he can't do it no one can!

GOOOOOOO SAAM!!
Ok, I'm sorry, but I'm a total Tolkien geek so....
If you really think about it, Frodo is the hero. If he had agreed with sam to get rid of gollum, then what would of happened at Mt. Doom? Frodo would of claimed the ring and walked out past sam only to get caught by the nazgul. Frodo spared gollums life and was able to complete his quest because of it. And also, (in the book) Frodo never was a jerk to sam. That little bit in the movie was one of the few things to dissapoint me.
Now, that thats done, time for star wars
I do agree that Luke is really cliched. And I do not really like movies that are incredibly cliche. The overall story of Star Wars is really good, and I liked alot of the characters, but the only time Luke was good was in V.
