Do you assume people on the internet are from the same country as you?

Depends on the method of interaction - if I'm playing Guild Wars, the odds are good the people I'm going to meet are Americans or Canadian by virtue of the time zone difference meaning most folks overseas aren't going to be on at the same time as myself.

Here I pretty much assume everyone isn't American until informed otherwise, given the Escapist's base of operations and all.

No never. I'm from Austria and it always surprises me when I meet someone from there online.

On another subject: I usually post in English forums and sometimes I make grammatical errors because English just ain't my first language. It's never happened on the Escapist yet, but sometimes people nit-pick about and go "Learn English before you write something!" and that's quite annoying. I know it's the interwebzz and people can be real abominations of evilness, but it's still pretty offending.[/rant]

(No offence to any Americans)
Coming from the person that spelled offense wrong.

The irony!

OT: No, not really.
Offence is an accepted spelling. [http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/offence]

Do people not use the internet anymore?

Never seen it spelled like that before in my life. Not here or anywhere else. My bad

I live in Scotland. I'm one of the few Scotsmen who found a cave with internet access and enough dead rabbit skins to buy me a computermabob in the country, although I had to downgrade to one-ply leaves and not washing my kilt for a while.

Nah, not really, but there's a significant portion of Scottish people who are idiots and care only for games in which they get to inflict some sort of damage on another member of the human race as quickly as possible. They don't bother with websites like this, so I tend to assume that people are from America, since the online services are plagued with Americans who want to have their unimportant say, and these Americans have embittered me to the point of no return where I assume that these shrivelled automatons of "run shoot kill insult opinion repeat" are all that exist.

Inform me of the hypocrisy and I'll do nothing, as I don't conform to Jonathan Gabriel's Internet Fuckwad Theory.

I'm Brazilian. Meeting another Brazilian on the web is a fortuitous occasion indeed, even if they are rarely cheery nerdy girls living at a car's ride from my current locations. So I guess no.

Never. Since I'm from Iceland I very rarely see people from Iceland on the Internet. However I do always suspect that most people I see or meet on the internet are either American or British.

Not at all. If for no other reason, then because my grandparents are on the internet, and they (and all of my extended family) are in a different country/on a different continent. And I talk to them everyday.

Since I'm from the U.S., I'll admit I'm guilty of this from time to time. What about the rest of you, Escapists?

EDIT: Before anyone asks, I did search bar (I love how that's a verb here), and found nothing.
Same, but that habit is slowly breaking due to the diversity of people, terminology, and opinions here.

Yes, I like how diverse The Escapist is; it's one of the things that keeps me around here.

No, I've gotta say that I usually assume people on here are from America (I'm from the UK myself).
This isn't for any reason other than they're one of the world's biggest countries...

That's kind of like saying "You're a moron. No offense."

No, I usually assume people live in the U.S. or the U.K., since most users do.
