Immersion is different to different people. Some people don't enjoy movies because they cannot suspend their disbelief, some people can't get into gaming because they cannot connect with the characters.

I for one, am very good at seeing characters in a game as characters, not pixels that I can move around and shoot people with. Story and character development are very important to me, and I believe that it should be an important aspect of gaming. People bred on Halo won't be nearly as connected with characters because there is very little character development in Halo. People bred on Half Life may be different, because the game seems to want you to feel for the characters.

And yes, the end of episode 2 choked me up.

The characters in Tales of Vesperia are really fleshed out and generate a lot of attachment. Hell, the first third or so of the game is basically nothing but character development, and you really start to care about the characters. I find myself really growing attached to Rita, Raven, and Judith, just because their personalities are so interesting.

I think Tales of Vesperia is really helped out by those little skits that you can choose to go through. They're there almost exclusively for character: What the characters think, how they interact with each other. It's great because it fills up that blank time that other RPGs tend to have. In most other games, you don't get to see what the characters or like or how they interact on their 'down time'. The skits really bring you a better understanding of each individual in the story.

You forgot Moira in your FO3 list. She was cool.

I loved all the NPCs in Mass Effect (I mean the named ones, not just the random people on the Citadel or whatever), save Kaiden. Without the characters, it definitely would have felt like less of a game to me.

EDIT:

Sierra Petrovita. I thought she was alright. I also liked Gob and Charon a lot!
How did I foreget Gob and Charon?! And Winthrop. And Roy Phillips. In fact, it might be easier to say all the ghouls are cool.

Oh, how could I forget Moira Brown! I already said God and Charon. All the ghouls that didn't want to kill you were awesome. I love me the underworld![/quote]

It seems I missed out a large batch of Fallout 3 characters from my list! Moira Brown was funny, you had to admire her enthusiasm for putting you in life threatening situations in the name of research. Hey, I even actually liked some of the robot characters in the game, including of course my loyal robot butler! Shakes, the robot bartender in Tenpenny Tower too. "Move...Along....Please", as he would often say.

Of course I care about characters and they are important. They drive the story forwards. Think of Half Life without the suit man, or Half Life 2 without Alyx, Badlur's Gate without Minsk and Boo, Prince of persia without all his women sidekicks... and many others. Characters are important. Without characters you don't have a plot, and without a plot you loose, in my opinion half the appeal of the game. Sure there are games which work without a story, but those are few and far between, and the actual level of enjoyment of those is questionable.

I agree, to get the most out of games u need to connect with characters on some level. Personally i like Cloud and Squall from FF7 and FF8 respectively. Both are total badass, look awesome, have sweet weapons and generally have a very good character developement through out the game. Its the reason most FF games will go down in the history of gamers as some of the best RPG's ever. Can't wait for FFXIII although 10 thru 12 have been disappointing after the previous standards.

i still say FF 3 thru 9 still set the bar for all RPG games. 10 and 12 were too short, can now beat them in under 12 hours of gameplay if i go fast enough. X-2 although much longer didn't just didn't match up to there older counter parts and 11 was too easy, atleast for me it was. Currently have 16 charcters all maxed out.

When and if Duke Nukem ever gets released, I am going to be inclined to love him and hate him at the same time...

I mean, he comes into our lives every few years, then abandons us again. Giving us a glimmer of hope every time his name is mentioned on an IGN page. But he has really let us down too much. I don't know if i can ever truly forgive him...*sob*

But one day he'll burst through my door with a half naked chick on one arm and an atomic shotgun in the other, bragging about his metallic sperm holders.

And I'll be there holding out a pack of hubba bubba in gratitude.

I hate games with sloppy characterisation. If they are trying to tell a story, characters and their motivations are VERY important.
That is why I loved God of War 1 (I was cruelly tricked and abused and I will have my revenge!) and hated God of War 2 (Graah! Graah! I'm angry!) :p

Interesting characters make you forget the fact that you're playing a game starring a "Ladies Man" with lace, bows, and a damned monkey tail.

Its when you make a stupid move, die, and have to sit through ten minutes of dialogue aigan do you realise how silly it all is.
But that's OK. I enjoy it.

i wish to draw this courts attention to the Case of Dom and his wife in Gears 2.

i couldn't give any less of a shit if you measured it in number of atoms.

i just didn't give a crap. trying to MAKE us feel for a character doesn't work. i didn't care about the dog in fable 2.
i was more upset when dogmeat in fallout 3 got killed, and he's an optional follower you can get. the dog in fable 2 was forced on you

At first I was going to rant, but then I figured, I shouldn't be mad at him. Ofcourse, I would not consider him a hardcore gamer, or atleast not as much as I. If he just wants mindless entertainment then I guess that is fine for him. I however really enjoy games for gameplay AND story. Ofcourse, my favorite characters are self-made ones which is why I love TES. But currently, I am greatly obsessed with the story in F.E.A.R., having just beat the first one last saturday and once my hair dries and I get ready, I am going to go out and buy F.E.A.R. 2. You don't have to care for the characters or plot, and I won't hate you for it, but I do think you are missing out, certainly you are missing out on why some consider games art.

Now a rant has formed in my head actually, but against people who act like games are rotting my mind. Games have great stories PLUS are interactive, and I think that elevates them above books and television. Most you can argue is books increase your vocabulary, but games can too.

I felt really horrible after I blew up Megaton in Fallout 3, and when I killed Roy Phillips and his ghoul followers. I then felt worse when Three Dog on Galaxy News Radio wouldn't SHUT UP ABOUT IT!

Well...Epic are a bunch of meatheads. My friends got Gears 2 long before I did as it was low on my to get list, but they told me about the part with Dom and his wife, and I just laughed and mocked him when he said he cried. Before I kept making gay jokes about Marcus and Dom. "And then..." "And then Marcus and Dom kissed, right? :p" "No...¬¬;"

Companion Cube in Portal - I found it very hard to incinerate him.
Despite what I first said, I found it very easy to kill the Cube. I mean, you just used it as a bullet sponge, and whatever it's made of and whatever's in it it's just an ordinary storage box with a heart on the outside.
