Achivements only really show if you are addicted to the game or not basically, especially for single player oriented games. On platforms like STEAM, it can be helpful for developers as it can show how far people are into their games and how much people are enjoying the game.

In some games the answer is Yes, some no.
Lotro for example I do deeds and want as many titles as possible as for Alien vs predator I really didn't care at all about the achievements.
So I guess it depends on how the award system is done?

It became something I actually cared about around the time I discovered I had about 300 more than anyone on my friends list, since then I've more or less gone overboard in terms of trophies.

How about you? Are trophies/achievements a waste of time or are they worth the effort?
I thought I read somewhere that most of the achievements are just there so the company can get statistics on how gamers play their games. Like Bioware knew that alot of people never actually finished DA:O because a lot of people never got certain achievements.

As for getting them I don't go out of my way but I do not like seeing my gamerscore, which is pointless, being xxxx/xxxxx so sometimes I'll go back and try to gain more. But most of the imbalance is from me playing a few games I absolutely didn't like and I got one of those contrived achievements for like getting past the intro video and now I can't get the damn thing off so I have a stockpile of "what if" gamer points I'll never get because I don't want to play a horrible game.

I'm a bit of a completionist, so if there's a game that I really like then I'll gladly explore every corner of it.

Do these little rewards matter to you? For me, it really only matters if I can actually enjoy the process of 100%ing the game. I had fun getting the platinum trophy for Final Fantasy XIII, beating every track and mission in Mario Kart DS, and currently I'm in the process of getting the platinum trophy for Portal 2.

However, some people tell me I'm wasting my time. I disagree; if I'm enjoying the process of finishing the game with 100% completion, then I'd say I'm getting my money's worth.

its a pointless gimmick. since 2006 my bio has included

"prestige mode and achievements are pointless"

because they both are. prestige mode is pointless because you lose everything in exchange for a stupid looking badge, and achievements are pointless because all they do is add to a meaningless number.

if rank meant something (like it does in bf2) then it wouldnt be pointless. if achievements could be traded in for something, or unlock special content, then they wouldnt be pointless.

but they just are.

people dont seem to care that they are wasting their time and effort on pointless bullshit.

they are nice and it does feel good knocking all the games challenges down and i like how you start a new game that you just got and the ahivements are all blank and i can almost feel the game grinning asking"you think you can handle that" then i knock them all down and feel smug

It would honestly depend on the game/mood/rental/owned.

A rented game like Iron man took about a day to get 100% achievements on, but it was a rental, easy, and fun to get all the achievements.

Something like dragon age, which I own, and have owned since it came out still lies incomplete because its just no fun to play anymore. The achievements aren't that hard...but..meh.

But I guess important enough that they give me another goal to aim for in a game I still enjoy playing. (Vanquish is however testing my patience with that final challenge.....)

if an achievement is fairly simple and easy to obtain, i usually go for it. sometimes ill go for the tougher ones too. there are only like 7 games i own that i have every achievement in. im close in Brink and Halo: Reach. im also only missing two achievements in CoD4, but one is glitched and the other one is impossible for normal players to obtain. you know the one -.-

If I'm playing the game and have nothing better to do I'll go after one or two fun ones, but really no.

I care very much about my achievements, which is why my gamer score is 56872 as of writing. I don't go round bashing people that because I have a fairly large GS I'm therefore elite and somehow above them. We just have a little fun with my friends on who has the highest, just harmless fun really as we all know it doesn't really mean anything else

I like getting them, but if I don't think I'm able to get one achievement, I'm flipping it the bird and leaving it to stay locked.

I dislike them quit a bit, there I am getting immersed in a really good game when ahh an achievement pops up and ruins the mood.

I dislike them, that fucking popup is an immersion breaking pain in the ass, also it's time they could have spent making the actual game better.

I also hate the terminology. How is an "achievement" "locked." its not in some box that you need a key for. It should be "milestone reached" or "trophy awarded" or "medal earned." You don't unlock an achievement, you achieve an achievement. Unlocked is probably the worst option they could have gone with.
Achievement unlocked: Nitpicker

OT I'm a bit of a completionist, so I tend to chase down achievements unless they're really annoying to get.

i think they encourage me to play the game more, or in different ways. it helps me get the most out of a game i paid for, so i usually am a trophy whore yes xD

Ehh... sort of.

If I see the opportunity I'll go for them because hey, why not? Sometimes I'll go out of my way for one if it sounds like a fun challenge.

I ignore the boring ones though. Y'know, "Kill 200 enemies with X weapon." Bleh.

Example of a bad one, shooting the gnome into space in Half Life 2: Episode 2
I actually had some fun doing that. Halving to hit the brakes and reverse in the middle of a frantic helicopter chase because the gnome had fallen off the car was rather hilarious.

Although, admittedly, after the sixth such incident I was starting to wish they had included a box on the car. Or just let Alyx hold the bloody thing.
I think that achievement actually was "an achievement". The problem I have with the whole system is most of the time they are just random things with no real thought put into them.

That chopper bit with the gnome was amusing. I ended up launching him down the tracks with the gravity gun then flooring it and as soon as I spotted him leapt out of the car and repeat. Far easier than trying to keep him in the car while swerving around.

The number of antlions that got a high velocity gnome in the face was quite high too.
