The Question: So, BE TRUTHFUL; do you get upset when someone mentions they like gaming on a device? Does it actually bother you? And what makes these things important if you do?

Examples: "I like games on the PC because they look better" or "360 just has a nicer controller" or "Wii has Mario and I love that!"
your example doesn't fit your question.

answer to your question; what console or whatever the person plays doesn't bother me at all. i would say its not my business, but that doesn't get my point across, its not that its not my business, its that i don't care. I couldn't give a fuck, i have more important things in my life to think about. y'know, big stuff like "huh, raining today..."

however your example talks about stuff like tech capabilities and hardware choices. i will happily debate with someone about the tech they should use for a certain product. shooters in my mind on consoles, strategy on the PC. but this doesn't mean what they actually use bothers me, its just a conversation.

I don't think "upset" is the right word, but how people still use consoles as their primary gaming platform in the year 2011 is just beyond me. I guess I feel... pity when people are willing to play on nothing but a console, and then sit there and steadfastly defend their objectively inferior platform. It's just depressing when people not just settle for mediocrity, but are completely content in it.
You see, that's what a lot of people don't get. Why is it so inferior? Because we can't upgrade the hardware? Well it's built so it can keep being used in better ways over its life cycle, unlike a PC which gets made obsolete a lot faster.

Because we're limited to a controller? Well not every game requires a keyboard, and those that are designed with a controller in mind work better with one. Sure, with some RPGs that make their ways onto consoles we lose out.

Because we have inferior online systems? Well not everybody wants online connectivity, and those that do will either just want to download some DLC or an indie game or just have a simple deathmatch with their friends.

The exclusive titles? Sure, some of them are awesome, and it's definitely worth having a decent PC or laptop around to play the ones you're interested in, but there's a lot of great console or handheld exclusives too.

Because of modding? Modding has a rather small audience, and some people either don't care or dislike how fiddly it can be for some games.

And at the end of the day, an overwhelming majority of gamers simply don't care. They could learn the WASD layouts of every game, they could diligently upgrade their rigs and memorise their system specs to compare against system reqs, or they could just get the game on a console and know it'll play.

I can't see anything inherently better about using a PC. Sure, it might be better for somebody who likes certain games, or who has a certain frame of mind, but that does not in any way make it better for everyone.

I'm about to shock everyone here.

I'm a PC, and Console gamer

What is that, the world coming to a end, fire and brimstone coming from the skies! Rivers and seas boiling, 40 years of darkness, Earthquakes and volcanoes! The Dead rising from the grave! Human sacrifice! Cats and Dogs living together!

Mass hysteria!

Yeah, but seriously, i have no preferred platform, I just like games regardless of what it's on. It could be on a frikken calculator for all I care, so as long as it's good. So, if someone wants to be ignorant, and not buy console exclusives, or PC exclusives, I don't give a toss. Sticking to one platform means your just missing out at the end of the day. Being a PC, and Console gamer enables me to have the best of both worlds, and it's not like it costs the world either to have both, especially nowadays.

Hi, multi-platform guy here.

First off I'd like to say Aeope (post#2) hit the nail on the head here.

Personally, I think the only "lower people" are the types that fight about this stuff. Sure, when there's an actual debate it's cool, but these are rarely anything more than digital shouting matches.

if you ever feel the need to "correct" somebodies taste I'd recommend shutting up and getting over it.

I'm live and let live. I don't really care unless you start to preach to me how wrong I am.

I play consoles because I like not having to worry about whether a game will play, but mostly because I have an actual physical disability that makes my hands mirror one another. It's easier for me to control both hands if I limit the amount of movement, and usually console games are like a thumb and finger per hand. When I'm only alternating four fingers, it's easier to mitigate because I can pay closer attention.

Most keyboard schemes are not as friendly.

I love being picked on, effectively due to a disability I have no control over.

Also, while this comic may relate specifically to Rock Band, I always thought the phrase "Stop having fun!" Related to pretty much every sort of elitist argument like this.

I enjoy fishing but I don't go up to people and yell "FLY FISHING IS SUUUPEEEERIIIOOOR!!!".
Bah! SPEAR FISHING 4 LYF, YO!
Oh, you did not just say that to me. Now I'm going to write a long and elaborate post explaining the pros and NONE OF THE CONS of fly fishing, while listing and exaggerating all of the cons of spear fishing because that is how I roll.
Don't forget to call me a Spear Fishing Elitist and just randomly make shit up.

In return I'll call you a Flytard and refute all your made up shit by saying you're just too pisspants scared to get in the ocean with the real fish. :D

Uh, not really. Due to the extended length of this console generation, gaming PCs have been going out of date at a remarkably slow rate. Even further, what is the alternative when a console goes out of date? Buy a new 500 dollar console? That seems a whole lot more expensive than upgrading a PC every three years...

MightyRabbit said:

Wait, what? Why would you defend this? PCs can use both controllers and M+K, while consoles usually require some external hardware to use M+K. This isn't an opinion thing... this is a fact thing. How you can just wish away this inferiority of consoles is stunningly illogical.

MightyRabbit said:

Ah, so instead of trying to build and maintain good and powerful online architecture, let's just make it appeal to the lowest common denominator. What fun! Again, why does this dismiss the inherit superiority of PCs? Just because some people won't use these features doesn't mean these features don't make PC the better platform.

MightyRabbit said:

Yet again: Wait, what? How does this make sense? Why is adding a feature a bad thing? You are basically saying that "Oh, mods are bad and worthless since some people don't want to use them". Yet again, you are wishing away a heavy con of consoles with an illogical and rather sad argument by again appealing to the lowest common denominator of gamers.

This is all exactly what I am talking about. People passionately defend mediocrity. Instead of wanting to get a better experience and better platform, they instead sit around and shriek at anyone who calls out consoles for being what they are-- vastly inferior to PCs.

Why is it that ardently defending mediocrity is usually frowned upon, yet it seems to be almost encouraged by console owners. It's depressing man. If someone was happily defending their choice not to pursue a higher education, wouldn't you be concerned about that? So why aren't people concerned when mediocrity is praised in the form of consoles? If console gamers moved their logic to anything else, then they would get laughed at. It's depressing... that's all: depressing when people are so incredibly happy with mediocrity.

I guess the only thing I'm annoyed with is people claiming FPS superiority on the consoles due to an analog stick.

Yeah, cliched to hell and back, but it annoys me.

Nope, considering theres so few decent console exclusive games, it doesnt make much difference to me.

When i do start caring is when a fanboy starts spewing about how his or her particular favourite console is the best ever and telling anyone who disagrees with them what idiots they are, that kinda thing just bugs the hell out of me.

Nah. But it apparently does matter to guys like the one I quoted. Frankly, I prefer the respectful majority PC gamers such as yourself. Unfortunately, some people still see the need to label people as dumb or low class based on the machine they play on. And I'm not going to stand for that anymore. I'm fine with people playing on any machine as long as people don't get all "I'm better than you because of my platform choice" about it, like the guy I quoted.

Fair enough, but remember that there are unmitigated wankers on both sides of the fence.
And fuck them too.

Not so much anymore. I had a friend who used to get a bunch of games for the PS3, which is (of course) not compatible with my PC for multiplayer goodness. That problem has since solved itself.
eeyup, it sure has, so yeah, it bothered me enough to stop getting console versions so i could play with my friends.

but as far as some random person, like say, YOU KEVIN *glares* i don't care what you play or what you play it on.
