Only geographically, politically and cultural wise we want nothing to do with those odd food eating people.
funny enough I (am Canadian) love British food the most out of all Europeian foods, well I havn't tried German yet but that is coming up soon................................hopefully since I am not in the situation to be going there
German food is pretty much any type of food but in insanely large portions. Paradoxically German women are among the best looking in the world.

and for the second part of that post from what I've seen I couldn't agree more:

now where ever you come from I don't know but around here when we think german "drunken" isn't the first thing that pop's up though beer maids usually is, I mean, it's been 60 years!

Whether the Brits or others like it or not people are going to think of Britain as European until they actually move it somewhere else and this is one of the cases where perception generally matters more than data so that's that.

Honestly, no. I don't. I've always thought of Britain and all the other Isles as the "United Kindom" (no, not being sarcastic), mainly just because they are not part of mainland Europe and have the inexplicable ability to withstand Nazi invasions. I've honestly never thought of Russia as part of Europe either.
Russia is a tricky one the capital is in europe but the majority of the land mass is in Asia

I've always considered the UK part of Europe.. geographically it's right there, their culture and history is stepped in "European-ness", and for better or worse, that's the community that your country has had to interact with during its existence.

Now I have a serious question for the Brits out there in the audience, because I really don't know. Reading a lot of the comments here, it's obvious there's at least a sub sect of Briton's population that isn't a fan of the EU, that the UK deserves special treatment in it and all of this- where does this sense of entitlement come from? The comments here have read "we are so different culturally, why should we have to change?" but I'm fairly certain France, Spain, Germany, and Italy all of pretty different cultures and people (that's what makes Europe so great right? Relatively small tracks of land containing vastly different cultures). If all of these countries can keep their cultural identity while enacting laws to help the continental/world political and economical scenes, what's UK's claim that they don't think of themselves as part of EU?
The last time Britain had a "European Invasion" was in 1066, since then, being an island we have been fairly separate from Europe. However, throughout history we have always been intervening in Europe, with the 100 years war and the Napoleonic wars, but back home, these wars usually had little effect on British day to day life. In the 19th century with Britain as a super power Britain's attention was largely focused on the Empire and Europe was overlooked until the rise of Germany, the fact that Britain was never conquered by the Nazi's reinforced this mental "separateness" from mainland Europe. In the mid-20th century there was a big debate wherever Britain's future was in Europe or the Commonwealth. In the end we chose Europe.

As you can imagine this island mentality means that many Brit's are suspicious of the continentals, in particular the French and the German's. A big part of the of this suspicion is probably fueled by xenophobia, and mixed in with national pride (As Britain does have a few things to be proud off) however national pride also goes hand in hand with arrogance, which leads some Brits to think that somehow or other where "better" than the Europeans, and be deathly suspicious of the EU. Many Brit's would want Britain to pull out of the EU, which is rather stupid as it would be economic and political suicide for us. The people who advocate this are following their xenophobia and irrational fear of "them bloody forginers" rather than reason- which strongly recommends we work with Europe.

Really we are just like any European country- we have a long and bloody history fighting other European's, we have good beer, good food, had an Empire, directly involved in the World War's, and posses a deep and unique culture. Our language is a combination of French, Latin and German, racially we are a cross between Anglo-Saxon's, Norman's, Viking's and native Celtic Briton's, we where under the Roman Empire like most of Europe was, and we suffered during the world wars, like any European nation we have our fair share of national hero's, evil king's, famous inventors and made our contribution to Western Civilization, while Italy has produced famous sculptures, France famous artist's, Germany famous philosophers and composers, Britain's forte is in the written word- with people like Shakespeare, Wordsworth, and Dickin's. We actually have more authors per head in the UK than any other country i think, and produce more books per head than any other nation apparently. Anyway, my point is that where as European as any other European out there, and that's a good thing, Europe has made the world, however most Brit's will just deny this association with Europe though.

I do, the same way N.Ireland is part of the U.K.
there is so much wrong with this statement
Explain.
well the U.K isn't something the European jumped onto and occupied and such

and there aren't terrorists from scotland/wales/england trying to free their neighbouring counterparts

and so on and so on
My point was that they are seperate islands but under the same rule, thats all. P.S not all of us want a united ireland.

Yes because Britain is on the continent of Europe and I've never understood why British people feel that they are better than the rest of Europe. It's fucking racist and ridiculous. Britain is not the leader of a massive empire anymore, we're not rulers of the world so why do we still act so superior??

I'm British btw
Probably alot of the same people who think that keeping the u makes their english better than the American version. Still english either way.

I'm aussie and I consider it to be a part of europe all though, if someone uses the term 'european' to me, I instantly think of a really tanned, perfect body (female and male.) person from the philippines.

I see your point, but I can't say it's a universal concept here. A lot of people I encountered are, like me, wary of legislation from what is essentially a foreign power, and that we've had no say in whether we want this or not pretty much makes it invasion and subjugation by any other name.

As an English Brit, I have no gripe with other Europeans or being identified as one (though I would prefer English, as that is what I am). Matter of fact, I love Europe, and would dearly love to see as much of it as possible. I just personally feel that complete involvement in the EU would not be good for us (I don't object to favourable trade agreements or ease of crossing borders, as they are clearly good ideas), but it would seem to bring a lot of regulations, which a lot of us have had enough of already. It's not all entitlement as much as it is a desire to be left to live our lives without interference from anyone, be it Brussels or our very own Westminster.

But that's how I see it. Pick this apart at your leisure.

I have this argument with my girlfriend all the time.

She's Italian, and does not regard the British Isles as being European.

I believe that, being as the BI are part of Europe, that automatically makes them European.

It's like saying that Japan isn't part of Asia because it's an island.

Crazies.

PS: I'm from Or-Stray-lee-ah.

Russia should really qualify as it's own continent. Isn't it bigger than the whole of South America or something crazy?
