I like watching the cutscenes, it adds quite a bit to the game that wouldn't be there if it was all gameplay.

I like action packed ones, because they're fun, but not so much the emotional exposition type. Just do that in game.
I agree completely. Action scenes FTW.
FTW FTW.

Your post made me laugh because I was just teaching my wife what FTW meant. She asked "people really use that one?". Sounds retarded

Now she uses it.

If they are sprinkled sparsely throughout a game so that you actually anticipate them, and they serve to enrich the story, then I always enjoy those ones. They become less novel in games like Final Fantasy.

Some of them are ok, provided they aren't too long. Sometimes it seems the production teams would be rather be making movies. Games are an interactive media, so any moments when the player isn't in control have gotta be short and sweet, or at least add something to the story. Not like that half hour one in Metal Gear Solid or whatever it was.

I think...1-2 minutes, tops for each one, otherwise it feels like they're trying to pad a game out, instead of it feeling like the natural flow of the plot.

Depends.

When xenosagaII came out over in europe the first game recieved a cutscene compilation bundled with II since the first game never saw the light of day over here. All the cutscenes amounted to a 5 hour film and I watch all of it in one sitting and i enjoyed it.
But certain games do drag sometimes, I found that for example gta4 and red dead are bloated with missions and I get bored of the cutscenes since most of them are irrelevant to the actual story.

Some of them can be really epic. So yeah, I like them if they are done well, but some seem completely disjointed from the surrounding gameplay.

Only if the game is good and the scene doesn't drag on.
If the game does it too much it's more like watching a movie than playing a game.

I'll happily sit through cutscenes if they're well done, like in GTA4 or Red Dead for examples. But if it's anything like the cutscenes in Saints Row 2, I'll just go on ahead and skip them so I can get back to mah insanity ^^

Yes I do, they help tell the story and set a mood.
To the people saying cutscenes shouldn't be there, I can understand the ones where it's action, and you could be doing the action, but emotional scenes and stuff, should be cinematics, otherwise while stuff is going on you're going to be jumping around on the sofa and what not, and if the character you control is involved in the emotion, how is he supposed to be there unless the developers railroad you into being in said spot, in which case they might as well have a cutscene.

The problem that arises with action scenes being playable though, would some of them would just end up being quicktime events.

Hate them. I'd rather read through the text in the chat log after skipping through the cutscene as quickly as possible, and too many forced cutscenes have led me to uninstall games. Hate them, hate them, hate them. I don't buy games to watch them, I buy them to play. When dialog options are woven into the cutscene that's even worse, because then I have to have it playing at least long enough to read the text to know how I want to reply.
You would in essence just prefer a game without a story wouldn't you?

No, actually, I'd prefer to be part of the story. Graphics aren't my thing. I would much rather read the dialog, than have it read to me, particularly when some of them speak really slowly to enhance their character's dialect or accent, or I just can't understand it at all.

I can't remember the last time I played a game where I thought the cutscene animation sequences were well done, or the voice acting added anything worth having. In fact, I'm pretty sure I've never played such a game.

I love them. Usually. Diablo 2 intro for example, anything with Tyrael in it. Anything with Kain/Raziel in it. Yes cutscenes are good, they are like a concentrated drop of story and if made well will engage and impress the player.

I disagree that you should have to play everything in a game, sometimes the technology might limit what you can do in a game, but a cut-scene can show what you want. This is only a plus for the story and I will agree to almost anything to improve a story.

In some games. FFX for example.
Well except for that one scene. You know the one. We all know the one.

O.T:I like cutscenes, they give me a time to get some food they give me a story to follow, and I love pretty much any story. Even some of the shitty one.
