The last two games I have bought on a whim was Red Dead Redemption for the x-box 360 and The Orange Box for the PC. Most of the games I do buy on a whim I end up enjoying like The Witcher: Enhanced Edition or Borderlands.

Never. I research my games. I learn who made it, whats the game play like, look up multiple reviews.

Though usually, whenever I have my heart set on a game, I usually end up purchasing it.

I know how you feel.

Though it's not so much compulsive, as completely insane, I spent $500 in one day on games on Steam, during the last summer sale. My collection went from about 40 games to 120. In ONE day.

I don't need that many games! Sheesh!

No. I'll do some research on a game I intend to buy but if I'm going to dive into a game I'll rent it (if I can).

Only if a sale or deal on a game is really good, and even I still try to get in some research if I can. I've haven't gotten a full game on impulse, though.

Edit: Oh yeah, and on Steam sales. But buying every Doom game for about £4 doesn't really seem like wasted money :p
I did that one too. And no, it was not a waste of money. One of the best ways I've spend $5.

I might buy a game on impulse if it's on sale, and I know it's supposed to be a good game. Usually though the games I buy are pretty well researched.

I don't buy games on impulse anymore, I did when I was younger and I have some great games, and terrible games as a consequence. I like to research a game, not just read reviews, but read about the game.

Impulsively or compulsively?
I compulsively pick up every Bioware game that comes out - even if it's not all that good. *coughsplutterdragonagetwospluttergasp*
I don't buy games impulsively though; I used to do it, and I ended up with a lot of shitty games.

A lot.

I was about to buy Mount & Blade for $4...then I saw it had a demo...

Then I tried the demo. Hated it. Didn't buy it.

If there wasn't a demo, I would have instantly bought it, though. No doubt!
You're missing out, Mount & Blade is a damned amazing little game.
Maybe for you...but I find it too...authentic. I prefer fantasy worlds with magic. And the combat to be frustratingly over-timing based. Don't even get me started on the houseback combat. And the army management.

Great for role-playing...bad for playing, really.

I almost always buy my games like this. If I feel like a new game, I'll go into the shop with a certain amount of money to spend and then just buy something that appeals. I don't think I've ever sat and researched a game before I have actually bought it. And really, across the years I've found a few gems and lots of decent games shopping like that. A couple of stinkers too, but when you buy as I do and let a game sell itself on the cover and it's description alone, it's bound to happen eventually. Besides, when the trade in market is so competitive over here, it's easy enough to almost get an equal value exchange.

Take a couple of days ago. I got paid, so I visited my local Game since I haven't bought anything new for a while. Ended up buying God Eater Burst and Lord of Arcana. All I knew about either of them is that the trailer of Lord of Arcana made it look similar to the Monster Hunter games. As for the other, I'd never even heard of it until I picked it up from the shelf. And I'm enjoying them both.

So yes, I always impulsively buy games (with the exception of sequels of course, if I've played the game prior to it)and to be honest, it works out very well for me. I prefer it that way. If I were to do too much research, I could find myself put off by negative reviews when the games in question could actually be to my taste. This way, I sample such a wide range of games, keeping the gems I find and exchanging the rubbish ones for other gems. It works for me anyway.

Nope. I research a game before I even consider renting it, then I rent it, and if I can't see myself replaying the game at least 3 times I won't buy it.

I disagree entirely. If you were expecting bayonetta style ridiculous and over the top button mashing combat I can see how you'd be disappointed with M&B's more tactical take on blocking and attacking plus I'd say the horseback combat is absolutely sublime once you get used to it. The best rendition in gaming, seriously!

However I'd also prefer not to derail this topic with arguing, especially when you've only played the demo, so I'll simply leave it at that. I disagree. Pity.

That is is mate. And i would have to say in my case it is not as much as compulsive buying
but impulsive buying. I just actually bought one from Steam right now.
And last night i got New Vegas from game.co.uk because it was cheap and i asw the
guys in OGF in Gametrailers positing pics of it and it really made me wanting
to play the game.

So impulsive buys because of sales mostly for me.

i impulsively bought oblivion a couple of years after it came out without reading anything on it somehow and that was obviously amazing.
I also impulsively bought Sins of a solar empire, enjoyed that and mlb 2k11 enjoyed that
one of the few that i bought impulsively and didnt like was MW2

Please don't generalize about my taste in games and combat according to my avatar. >_>

It's insulting that you think I'd hate it merely because it wasn't "button mashing" (anyone who's played Bayonetta on Hard/Climax...or even Normal can tell you it's not simply "button mashing" due to an emphasis on timing and dodging)

My problem with it was that it wasn't very well done on horse back, because what are clearly hits tended to miss. And this isn't an RNG dice-roll to determine hit kinda game, either. Don't get me started on horseback archery.

And don't knock the demo. It had a good hour plus of content, even after the tutorials were done. Usually more than enough to fairly judge a game, at least on combat and core mechanics. And add the Warband demo's hour to it, too. 2 hours of M&B gameplay.

I did really like the blocking, though. You couldn't just hold down the button. You had to time it.

Also, the lack of any voice acting is ridiculous to me. Even Morrowind, which is 5+ years older than M&B, at least had greetings when you approached a person.

I know this is an indie developer on a budget, but a little bit goes a long way.

And army management isn't my thing...Unless I have direct control over every fucking action they ever take. Or the gambit/tactics system from FF12/Dragon Age to give them clear guidelines.

Are there any mods to fix any of my issues? I hear it has a thriving community in that regard.

Yes, when it's cheap.
And I mean really cheap.

The 'stuff below ? 10' kind of cheap, even more so when it's below ? 5.
And the last two months, the bargains just seemed to be everywhere:

- Gitaroo Man
- No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle.
- MadWorld
- Hellboy: Science of Evil (I just KNOW it sucks, but dammit, less than ? 5 for a first hand PS3 game? I just can pass on that!)
- Shinobi
- The Bouncer
- EverGrace
- Opoona
- Herdy Gerdy
- Second Sight
- God Hand
- Alien Hominid
- Legend of Kay
- Kya: Dark Lineage
- Vexx
- Evil Twin: Cyprien's Chronicles
- Brave: The Search for Spirit Dancer
- Dr. Muto

...And I don't even know when I'll find the time to play it all.
