Yes, I wish I was born in time to still explore the world, and specifically be around during the "golden age" of Piracy. Either that or I wish I was born much later than now when we make first face to face contact with an alien species, or have the capability to travel in space. Essentially I just wish there was somewhere new to go and vastly undiscovered.

Edit: As for living in the past if I did die of some horrible disease that we have a cure for now I think I would be ok with that in trade for a life at sea.
So, basically, you want to go back in time and be 'someone'.

Again, folly. Your chances of being 'someone' is even less likely back then, seeing as there is a reasonable chance you wouldn't even make it to your teenage years.

And life at sea BLOWS
I don't even want to be someone, frankly I couldn't care if I was swabbing the deck or a cooks assistant or something else meaningless. As long as I got to see new land I would be happy.

And yes there are very sucktastic things back then but at least it would be some sort of experience. Right now I live a stagnant life behind a desk and it is frigging boring. If I were to get shot right now by some psychopath I probably wouldn't be mad or upset, I would just be happy that finally something happened in my life that at least changed my daily routine.
Take it from someone who has seen this happen.

You have no fucking idea what your talking about.

That wasn't meant to come out like that superv but yeah, from the history books, films etc it sounds great, don't think it was great if you were there.
The history books make it sound great? What history books make living through the bloodiest war in history sound...

Oh, hang on, didn't specify which country. Living in a 1st world neutral country wouldn't be so bad, although "1st world" meant something rather different back then.

One would sort of assume that if a the job was so boring that being murdered would be a step up, you might quite your job in favour of more or less absolutely anything.

Probably not. But you get the idea that I am bored and in dire need of change. Which might come soon if I end up going back to college this year.

Way to take a single line from my post and twist it to mean the exact opposite of the point I was trying to make. and did I mention "1st world" in any part of my post?

You got an agenda or something thal?

That is a work in progress. Just saying right now that's how I feel. But on topic I always did want to travel, Up until recently that was sated in my life due to my father's military career and my own. Now however yeah stuck at a desk and bored. Waiting to go back to college. So it is nice to think about sailing.

There are ways to get change. You can join the Army. Join the Peace Corps. Become a cloistered monk. Become a member of the SCA and live a pseudo-medieval life on the weekends. There is so much excitement in the world. You just have to go and get it.

Ok, yeah, lost my train of thought there.

But my point stands...I have never, ever come across any historical works that portray WW2 as a great time to live. Even the most concise summary will tend to include the part about shitloads of people dying and insane levels of persecution. There's nowhere you can really go from there but further down.

I'm just fine with this one.

People haven't been any better at any other point in time, and aside from people, I have no real problem with anything.

I would need to agree that I would like to go back to around the times after WWI when archeology was still discovering all new things and were famous when they found new and amazing things.

P.S. I know all the historical stuff that would such I am an Archeologist so even with the crap I would take the ability to be the first person to see the tomb of an ancient king or be the one to find the ancient humans in Africa

Army is a no, got out not too long ago, my knees aren't good enough for them anymore. And I'm not exactly the good Samaritan type when it comes to Peace Corps or becoming a monk. What is the SCA?

How did I get to talking about how bored I am when the thread is about people fantasizing about an era? Arg...I talk too much.

Are you talking about past eras? If so, no way in hell. People like me wouldn't fit in during past times. Racism was unreal, quality of life was ass, and for the longest time your employers/masters could easily send you to do a task knowing full well it would kill you without a hint of guilt. As much as people complain about now, it isn't so bad. Although, I do await the generation when all this technology mess exceeds sustainability and we're forced to more simple lifestyles. I miss people actually talking instead of texting each other across the room.

The New Milineum(If that counts :D)

The new millennium was mostly garage music, with some pop starting to become more mainstream like it is now, and fuel was roughly $1.50/Gal [US$], Insane Clown Posse was more murder than miracles, and Eminem was still "just a white-boy rapper".

I always say this, but nothing good ever came from the '90's, that includes '99.

OT: If given the chance, I would love to be born long enough before WWII that I could enlist into the war, as for where I would want to be born at, I would have to say either the Soviet Union or England.

but speaking on pure fantasy..........

I would love to of been born in the year 22317..........

I mean, by then we SHOULD of developed flying cars and jetpacks........ not to mention pratical energy-based weapons..........

and maybe space colonies............

and cyborgs.........
This also sounds like a sweet idea I never thought of going into the future.

BTW sweet Calvin and Hobbs pic.

"The" lifestyle of "the" old days? What particular period do you mean? Most of the time, life was just as complicated as it is now, with the exception of being a subsistent farmer or whatnot, when menial work was more or less the entirety of your life.
You know, the good ole days. When you would wake up 6 days a week at the crack of dawn to farm someone's land. Before your wife could legally file rape charges against you and domestic abuse was "nobodies business". When you didn't have to listen to artists like Ke$ha because art was a luxury good that most people didn't experience outside of church.

I might like to check out the future sometime, but we know so little about that mysterious era.

Yeah, the fun and joy of life doesn't actually come from being as comfortable as possible and living as long and pointlessly as you can...

I would trade a hundred year life span of nothingness for forty years of meaning.

That being said I would not choose to live in another era (if I could just visit one then maybe) but not for any of the reasons I have seen stated above. The thing is this era is awesome. Sure millions of people have seen the pyramids in Egypt, but I haven't yet, and I certainly hope to someday. Living in this time gives us an amazing opportunity to see our whole world to explore any number of possibilities and to learn sooo much more than has ever been possible before.

There are however many problems with the world now and just because you can go and travel the globe doesn't mean you will, but then it doesn't mean you would have in the past either.

Well, I can think of afew eras I'd go to;

Midievil Europe: So I can try and become a D&D style thief or mercenary, see where it gets me, it could be fun!

17th century: In that time, pirates were big, as long as you don't get caught by the authorities, you could have a grand time lording over a small settlement, pilaging big ships, grabbing treasure, and so on, so yes, I think I'd want to be a pirate at that era, or a priviteer, whichever one seems better.

19th century America: At that time, the western United States wasn't fully tamed yet, for a while, the American Civil War was still going on, and the Old Wild West lifestyle seems pretty fun (though I live in Washington State, which is at the West Coast, so I might feel right at home in some ways.) So either I'd be roaming the West for adventure, or I'd enlist in the Union Army in the American Civil War.

Aaaaand.. that's about it.

You'd want to be a Soviet soldier during the Great Patriotic War (and, possibly the Winter War before that, I guess)? Um, there are one or two rather large downsides to that that I can think of off the top of my head.

I suppose I looked at this thread a bit differently to most, I was looking at it from the "what point of history would you like to witness?" point of view.

Scrolling up I think the threads gone a bit pear-shaped!

That is intriguing and something I should look into..
