Do you fight the "secret" bosses or complete the "hidden" dungeons in rpgs?

So simple question . I personally mostly play Jrpgs so i'm not sure if this also applies to Wpgs but do you go out of you way to beat the "secret" bosses or to complete the "hidden" dungeons in these games? And what is the hardest boss/dungeon you have succesfully completed?

For me the first thing to come to mind is dark cloud ( anyone remember that game?). The hidden dungeon at the end had 100 floors of pure brutal dungeon crawling . The reward was the best sword in the game . Really fun, really hard , totally satisfying .

As for bosses . I would like to say elizibeth or lucifer from persona 3 and smt:nocturne , but i am ashame to admit, i haven't sucessfully completed them . The hardest i have thought were the optional bosses from the hunt game in FFX. So much grinding and strategy i put into killing all those guys , but i had fun doing it .

I usually try to do the secret bosses and dungeons when given the oportunity , but i don't always succeed . I find them to be nice little extras for people that seek extra challenge and i am almost always dissapointed when games don't offer them .

On my first playthrough of a game I generally won't, but if I like the game I'll search for everyting (secrets, hidden items, in jokes, etc) on my next playthrough.

I used to hunt down every secret I could in any RPG I had... but now that I have my own income, and therefore, am not limited in how many games I can get (mostly), I find myself less and less inclined to search for secrets in games.

That isn't to say that I DON'T ever do that stuff, it's just that if an extra boss is INCREDIBLY hard, I'm much less likely to try and beat it.

For example, I've beaten the Sephiroth in both PS2 Kingdom Hearts games, but I never got around to beating the extra bosses in Birth By Sleep.

Only if I like the gameplay.

Read: only if I like the combat

Read: only if they're designed well

Read: only in Bethesda games

Minerva from Crisis Core: FFVII and Vanitas Remnant from Kingdom Hearts BBS. Since they don't require 100+ hours of grinding, they're the only ones I've taken on and beaten.

I've also beaten Ultima Weapon in FFVIII, but he's not that hard if you spam Squall's limit break.

There's no shame in not being able to kill a SMT bonus boss haha.

OT: Depends on the game. Most modern RPGs, sure, why not, they're probably too easy anyway. MegaTen lol nope. If I ever complete a roguelike successfully, I'm grabbing the Amulet of Yendor and getting out of there.

Not really. I remember getting mostly done with the super secret dungeon in Rogue Galaxy and then dying in hour 2 or so, so I decided to find out what you get for finishing it.
Best armour in the game for the love interest character which happened to be a bikini.
Considering my party never had her in it anyway... meh. I left it.

Depends on how much I've enjoyed the game.

For instance, I did in Final Fantasy X, as I had such a good time with it. But I didn't do it in ... actually, I can't think of another game where I did go searching for "secret" bosses and alike.

This is like my favorite post on the escapist ever.

Mostly what they said, in every other game I'll beat everything I find, but I won't go out of my way looking.

Oh, yes, especially in Final Fantasy games.
Hunting down the Dark Aeons in FFX was almost as fun as completing the story, Dark Yojimbo's Zanmato, frustration.

Only if it is really worht it. The Disgaea series comes tomind here. Baal isn't so much of a "secret" boss, as he is the ultimate boss.

So ultimate, that the characters in game break the 4th wall to complain to the developers how crazy powerful he is. Gotta love that.

I do if the result is worth it... like getting all the GF's in FFXIII... also in FFIX I always get an S rank in treasure hunting... so that
Gilgamesh tells you his name!

Also I hate moving on in FF:Tactics unless all availiable missions at that point are done! Then again 95% of FF:T is optional!

I also like to visit the rarer towns and things in JRPG's... like the small villages hidden in mountains that can be overlooked! (And for some reason are always Japanese/Chinese themed!)

I don't usually try and take on the mega bosses though, as I don't usually have time! :S

I do it in the games I like. Tales of Symphonia left me wanting a lot more even after countless playthroughs and doing all the hidden bosses with different requirements and goals for how I would beat them and what characters I would use.

To answer your sorta question, yes, most western rpg tend to have optional or even hidden bosses as well. A good example is Baldur's Gate 2 where if you go through a single seemingly ordinary doorway holding the right seemingly random item, you'll find the doorway leads to where a secret society is holding meeting... an extremely powerful society that doesn't like that you're there. One of the toughest fights in the game!

And sure, I sometimes complete that stuff if I already really enjoy the game.

Usually save it for a second playthrough however. First game is just for enjoying the ride!

Generally, yes.

The only exception is if the game i'm playing is shit, and i can't be bothered playing it, OR, if i have no time or/and bored with it at that moment, in which case i might go back to it later.

In an RPG? Culex, Super Mario RPG. So difficult, I used all those "I might need it later" items on HIM (and his gems) instead of the final boss.
