I think because it makes your face look better: more pronounced jawline and cheekbones (at least that's what I've noticed).
Though the reason why most do it is probably because it's sort of a meme I guess. Like the 'V' fingers every guy used to do on every picture a few years back, even if they didn't even know what it ment. (It means 'Fuck you' in Britain)

It makes them look like they have bigger lips, a better jawline, and good cheekbones. So they do it because it makes them look like, had they not been doing it, they'd be really attractive. It's like a double feint.
Thats just hideous. And the worst part is that i live in a neighborhood where there is a group of girls who WILLINGLY accepted their group name as, The Crackhous Girls (im not kidding) and they do this on photos all the time.

I don't really like it at all, though to be honest a lot of the supposed sexy faces women do in pictures turns me off to a degree. Honestly I think a nice warm smile or amused smirk can do nicely. All this pouting and sexual predator glares kind of put me off.
