Do you hate people who argue till they are blue in the face, even though you know they are wrong?

Just because it's published in a book doesn't mean it's right.
Even if your teacher is the most intelligent person you've ever met,
and completely backs up that book doesn't mean their right.

I've been through college (it was art, not music but they follow the same arguments),
I had a few text books that seemed to make perfect sense at the time and some of the teachers were brilliant.
Now that I'm out of college and reflected back on my education, I realize just how wrong they were.
I don't respect them any less or regard them as any less brilliant,
but forming your own opinions is part of growing up.

That's funny, he was born in May of 91, you in December of 91.
So technically, he's older than you.
hmmm...snap..you are correct

however that does not change the fact that here we have a guy who is utterly convinced he is correct...has pretentiousness and elitism bursting at the seams

a prime example of the "university student who thinks they know everything"

mabye I'm like that to...but I try to not be (somtimes)

And he's so horribly and consistently rude you can make as much fun of this idiot as you want without feeling bad for it.
I'll be keeping an eye on this thread. I feel it's likely to make my day in a while.

And he's telling people to grow up because they won't accept the "factual definition" of music, fucking music, that he found in his textbook.
He's such a picture perfect early university student it hurts.
lets not be too harsh...he's obviously going through a phase

How old is the fabled textbook? Is it older than computers... most of the quotes put in these books are taken from things that are older than computers, and are therefore out of date...

Wecome to the 21st Century! We have computers and electronic devices to make music on now!

EDIT... Also... that is the most hilariously butt-hurt I have ever seen anyone on here before! :p An all-caps title and everything!

Get a load of this guy :D

This thread is ironic as hell.

The idea that because music was defined a certain way in one text book, means that it's right, is ludicrous.

I liked the implication that his textbook is more worthy of being cited than Wikipedia or any of the cited articles that it might link to.

I'm interested in finding out how old that textbook is, too, because it certainly sounds like it was probably first printed before the 80's.

Guys, computers are percussion instruments. Everyone knows this.

Music is about ordering and arranging sounds by rhythm and pitch, wherever they might be found. Just because musical instruments are designed to easily produce pleasant musical tones does not mean they have a monopoly on some innate quality of musicality.

I doubt he's even going to return to this thread, they usually don't.

I guess I'll address the topic brought up by the thread title though:

Yeah, especially if it's an argument over the internet.

Remember this flowchart, folks:

I don't think arguing on the internet is worth it. You hardly ever change the opposing side's opinion, and usually one of the two people involved ends up raging and seething for the rest of the day.

As far as actuality goes, I feel pretty much the same way. I try not to be combative if I can help it, sometimes I can't, but usually I'll live and let live with somebody unless their opinion is so wrong that it's going to end up doing physical harm to someone.

So what, it's fucking fun. I wouldn't be on these forums if it weren't for arguments, sounds boring.

Are you seriously suggesting we should just all "get along", or "respectfully disagree"? Ew.

No, by all means, other people can argue all they want, it makes for a nice read while I'm eating or can't be arsed to do something else. Arguing over the internet just isn't really something for me (not that I never do it, I just don't get the same sort of enjoyment out of it that other people appear to get).

I study music,

We are given a clear cut definition of what music is, what it is open to and how to create it.

Yet people argue the content of the book because Wikipedia says something different...

Who let these kids have access to the internet?

Do you hate these sort of people ?
No. I hate people who thinks they "know" that someone else is wrong (and that they are right).

It's arrogance at its worst.

What i also hate, however, is people who skip reading your arguments. And then they bring up a point you have already replied to earlier. If people can't bother reading, they shouldn't bother writing either.

There is no "definition of music". It's an art form. Just because a "textbook" says so, that doesn't mean it's true. If it were a science textbook, talking about science, then it's be a lot more credible. But it's talking about music, something subjective. There's no use getting butthurt on the internet, so I'd recommend just dropping the whole thing altogether. Or, better yet, question your current definition and do some research and/or soul searching. Maybe you'll come up with a new definition that will allow you to embrace the forms of art that you had previously rejected!

Also: The irony is strong in this thread.

I'll still argue even when I realize I've lost. Just the thrill of the hunt I guess.
