I'll say memes, because their purpose is to be the inside jokes for internet nerds without friends to have inside jokes with. Them being popular with everyone took that away in my opinion.

Funnily enough, I hate all the hate that twilight gets. I mean they're not the greatest books ever written, but they're okay. I don't get what's so terrible about them.

I go a level deeper, I like things because it's popular to hate them. I'm a geek geek, so whereas a lot of people in Geek culture define themselves in some ways in opposition to other people, I'm one step withdrawn even from that and do the same with that culture as if _it_ were the social norm

I reckon my level of enjoyment with a film is roughly equal to most people's but I interpret my feelings to go outside whatever the norm is, because I deep down hate defining myself in terms of other people and like to look the other way. So for example I was very entertained by The Avengers but because most people wanted to love that film, I prefer to focus on it;s failures rather than it;s successes.

...it makes me doubt myself sometimes. Because I enjoyed the ending to ME3, I really did and when the EC came out I uninstalled it because it ruined that vision of the story I have in my head that I love. But that runs very naturally with how I would be naturally inclined to think, so can it be genuine?

I'm also trying to bring my mind in with the logic that millions and millions of people love Twilight, CoD and Transformers and pay to see them and have a good time, and apart from some slightly iffy morals, these things aren't doing any harm and surely there should be some definition of good that can encompass something that brings millions of people pleasure?

Honestly this is mostly why I stay away from the newer mainstream hard rock.
examples? just out of curiosity

that song by Greenday (that fucking song) I absolutly hate I think mostly because its just avergae to me and also because EVERYONE loves it..and that pisses me off to no end
Breaking Benjamin, Godsmack, New Alice in Chains, Mushroomhead, Mudvayne, System of a Down, Green Day; Its all decent rock but to me it all just sounds too similar and "faux"-heavy.
I'm hipster so I almost entirely agree with except system being samey sounding and faux metal, that makes me just say wat?

The samey sounding thing is just my own opinion and can't really be rationalized. However the use of metallic riffs and such yet still being lighter music puts me off on many of those bands.

I disliked things for their popularity before it was cool to dislike popular things. Seriously did, since like age 8. But currently topping my list are; reality TV, Borderlands, hatred against that anti-islam movie, and just about any popular fiction novel.

so another one on my ever growing list of [b/]bullshit people say[/b] is "people only hate it because its popular!"

now think about this one for a second...do you hate things just because they are popular? I mean really?

I think the answer is kind of "yes and no"...I think the thing in question has to be bad in the first place, its populaity is what makes it worse and bring in hate..for example

50 Shades of grey- is a terrible terible book in anyway you can imagine, this becomes even moreannyoing when it sells so much and everyone and your mum is reading it...so

the transformer movies- yes alot of peole hate them...and I'd still hate them regardless of how popular they are,

COD- I can't exactly say COD is a bad game...but its reputation and everything surrounding it...its kind of hard not to hate it
"you hate it because its popular" is just a bullshit tacit for people to defend games and movies they know are widely scoffed at as bad and cant come up with a defense for it without just lying.

No one hate cod because its popular, no one hates transformers because it popular.
they hate them because its garbage.

the only people who hate popular things are probably hipsters who can kiss my ass anyway, and make up like a fraction of a percentage of a wide spread opinion to not even make a blip on a radar so high tech, it could pick up minnow farts.

Sometimes a games popularity will greatly annoy me if I don't think it's good. This was the main reason I disliked the Halo Franchise. However I now see that it's more on the people who praise the game than the game itself that I should look down on.

Hate is such a strong word. I've thought that stuff is stupid, but I don't hate stuff
Oh, so you don't hate Hitler? You support Hitler? HEY, EVERYBODY, THIS GUY'S A NAZI! YEAH, THAT'S RIGHT--A NAZI! A BIG, FAT NAZI! What about cancer? You don't hate cancer? You like cancer? HEY, EVERYBODY, THIS HITLER LOVER LIKES CANCER AND HOPES YOU ALL DIE FROM IT!

But seriously, I agree. Hate's too strong a word for these things (except for cancer & Hitler). I wouldn't say I dislike anything because it's popular. I think that's bad practice for human beings. If I ever find that I dislike something based on nothing else other than that it's popular, I force myself to check it out. Sometimes I go in and away thinking it's stupid, but sometimes I become a fan. Popular things are popular for a reason, after all.
I'm reminded of that Chris Rock comedy Head of State where a common guy gets chosen to run for president. Being a comedy, the candidates run ads like this:

Then let us end this massive War of Simons and refrain from further thread-derailment.

Also, I'm surprised people don't do this in real life. It's ridiculous....but sadly it would probably work
Hah. That's not far from political ads nowadays. But that's another topic, I suppose.

EDIT: Why would my text not show up?
OK, once again:
Then let us end this War of Simons and give this thread time to recover from the massive derailment.

Popularity amplifies the love/hate for a object as having radically different sides tends to crystalize both sides into having more hardcore versions of their opinion, is how i usually see it happening.

No, of course I don't hate things because they are popular; that is inane. I take the time to look at something based on it's own merits, then decided whether or not I like it based on those merits. To do otherwise is incredibly silly and foolish, and I really don't understand the mentality that would drive someone to do so. :\

Usually. I hate to say that but it's the truth.
The logic is this: if it's popular, it stands to reason that it's liked by a majority. Read: mainstream. I don't hate things like say, MGS, which is popular amongst the gaming community, because that's a majority of a group. I'm talking about like... the majority of society.
And the majority of society are usually ignorant to certain things, e.g. in books what makes good writing, characters and plot. So they like Twilight, 50 Shades, other crap like that. This is why I hate it. Because it's popular, but not extremely awesome, because it's so bad. So I can safely assume I'll hate it.

I did actually read New Moon without having read any of the other books in the series and it was readable, but samey all the way through... it was a generally BORING read.

No, because I am a logical being.

I also don't hate many things, and those that I do, are truly worthy of it.

I have perfectly valid reasons for hating things, but when I see everyone around me pretty much worshipping the stuff I hate and backing me into a small corner, it makes me hate it even more.
It's like, "How the actual fuck can you like this shite? Has everyone been replaced with mindless zombies who can't think for themselves any more?"

Different strokes for different folks, but when something is so clearly terrible, I can't understand why anyone would like it.

Let me use Chris Brown for an example, and his fans who defend him from the people who dare to not like his music and call him out on beating the shit out of a woman. Saying they wouldn't care if he beat them. Why he's still in the spotlight, I don't know and why those women who say they wouldn't mind being beaten by him haven't been slapped in the face several times, I still don't know
