I have one or two old school friends who are inclined to play co-operative FPS and strategy, and one or two (from the escapist) who like playing other types which I enjoy a fair bit more. Now, my ultimate gaming night would be all of them in one game, but alas, it would be hard to find a game all of them happen to enjoy...

I have my one co-op buddy and that's it. Not so much a group as an unstoppable duo of zombie headshooters.
The only multiplayer game I would play minus my friends is FIFA online.
Call of Duty: I have a group of friends I met all the way in CoD4. If they stopped playing today, it is almost certain that I would never get another Call of Duty.
Borderlands 2: My step-brother/friend who moved away to California is whom I play. If he stopped playing, there is a good chance that I would stop playing (I do like the games so I might finish it).
Halo Wars: I am one of the five people still playing this game. However, I only play 2v2 or 3v3 with my two friends who also own this game. Once again, if they quit, it's certain that I would stop playing.
Madden 2013: I play a franchise with the Halo Wars group. If they quit playing, it would be likely that I would stop playing Madden online, though I would continue playing singleplayer.

None that I really play with regularly. I make some friends over online games like Skullgirls, but I can never really find them online to request a match up.

I have been gaming with my closest IRL friend since elementary school. We've picked up a couple newcomers throughout the years including some guy from California back in CoD4; we still play and talk to this day. I don't think I'd still be a gamer if it wasn't for those guys I play or talk with online.

hmm, I would like to play with friends online. Unfortunately my RL friends don't play much anymore due to starting a family.

We mostly play Halo together, usually 4 since its the newest, but occasionally xbox minecraft as well.

Yes. I have two friends that I play Gears of War 3 with and two friends that I play Bad Company 2 and Battlefield 3 with.
Most of my RL friends are gamers, and we have at least 2 LAN-parties a year. However since most of them/us stopped playing WoW we hardly ever play together online anymore. I've never been much of a multiplayer (though my roommate and myself fire up a game of MP Civ occasionally).
When we do have those LANs we mostly play, CoD, HLM, Civ, Minecraft and whatever we happen to have recently discovered on Steam for cheap.

We used to have a little group that got together at least once a month to play games split screen. It was nice, being the only social outing I attended, but apparently we don't do that anymore.

I used to but not anymore, the two friends I was closest to were married and when they split up he did a bunch of shit that really pissed me off and I stopped talking to him about two months after. I stayed friends with her for a quite a while after that but there are only so many times you can make plans to hang out, or game together only to have the other party not show up or give any real explanation for it before you get sick of their shit and stop talking to them too so....

Nope; throughout my life so far I've known pretty much one person who's into vidyagaems as much as I am now, and he basically isn't anymore.

Not a seperate group. My friends are just gamers, and if we can play online (Co-op or Competitive), then that's how it goes.
I have a bunch (around 5-7) people who enjoy gaming and we do sometimes play older titles through LAN, since we all live relatively close to each other. That said, we don't do this often, because all of us prefer single player games. But we love talking about games.
It depends on the game. Like RPGs are single player experiences and should stay as such.
Although I wish Fire Emblem had a sort of Chess mode were you can face your friends in honorable singular(Army to Army) combat.
But does the mechanic fit the game? and does focusing on that singular element come at the detriment of better more unique elements?

My college housemates and I were fierce competitors in the original Super Smash Brothers and some of the multiplayer games in Super Monkey Ball on the Gamecube. Since then, pretty much all of my gaming has been of the single-player variety, which is fine by me as I'm mostly drawn in by turn-based RPGs, Mega Man games, shmups like Gradius, etc...
The only new games I keep up with are hand-held releases. The few friends I have who still like gaming at all are big into triple-A first-person-shooter games, so I'm definitely on my own with the hobby.
