Given that my back catalog of favorite anime can be described as consisting of:
A surprising amount of reverse-harem shows
A surprising amount of pure romance show
A surprising amount of relationship and personal-growth driven shows
I'm gonna go with no, I don't have a problem with it. If I were going to run down my favorite shows, and why I loved them:
1. RahXephon. Take out all of the giant robot fights, and it's basically just about Haruka finally getting up the guts to tell Ayato she loves him, and about Ayato becoming mature enough to comprehend and accept it. Throw in the realism of Megumi's relatively unhappy ending, and I loved it.
2. Full Metal Panic. Take out the giant robot fights, and it's just about Sousuke learning how to be a functioning normal person, and realizing just how much he cares about Kaname. And about Kaname realizing (in true tsundere fashion) that she loves him, too. Then bad things happen to her, and he goes apeshit, basically
3. D.N Angel. I barely have to remove anything for it to just be about the love life of the main male character. It's just done so damned well. It doesn't pull any punches, and really treats it like "how would this work in real life". The girl who seems to be a selfish ***** who doesn't appreciate him or reciprocate his feelings, never reciprocates his feelings. I just love it.
4. Revolutionary Girl Utena. It's a deep, psychological, story presented in the guise of a pretty straightforward magical girl set up. Girl gets dragged into fights for the "rose bride", first out of a desire to revenge her friend against a douchey guy, and then to protect the bride. The girl in question wants to be a prince, and... God, it's just all about the psychologies and relationships.
5. Negima!? Cute little boy (who happens to be a wizard) is brought to Japan as part of his training, and becomes a teacher at a girl's middle/high school. In the process, he befriends the girls, and ends up basically turning them into an army of magic-infused superwomen. I classify it more as a girl's anime (a) because it doesn't have much of any fanservice (one shot, which given the angle of the shot makes sense), (b) the characters are deep and emotional, (c) the girls end up being more useful and capable than Negi himself, and (d) it's much more a nakama thing than a harem thing.
6. Ouran High School Host Club. It's a recent show for me (and I just wrote a review about it), but talk about a shojou anime. It's got basically exclusively girl-centered fanservice (not explicit or that bad, but the yaoi fangirls were atwitter about it), a main female lead who's (at best) completely disinterested in issues of gender, and (at worst) wants to be a boy. And it's about the relationships of the characters. And I loved it from start to finish.
Now, do I also watch some more male-centered anime? Sure. I even watched Rin: Daughters of Mnemosyne (which I'd review, if I could bring myself to rewatch it; short version: dear god no). The problem I find is that violence in and of itself has no meaning for me. Violence with a purpose (especially righteous indignation, see: Taken), is fantastic, but I have to be able to feel with the man committing the violence. Fanservice is kind of weird for me... If I wanted pornography, I'd watch pornography; I find it detracts from the actual story. And I like stories, and characters, and especially ones I can relate to.
So, maybe I'm a chick, I dunno.
Now I kind of want to review Mnemosyne... The symbolism and metaphors are interesting in a "what kind of cracked-out mind came up with this" kind of way.
