Ive heard a few songs from him and enjoyed them alot, id just call him a singer.

Yeah, you could do that. Which is a bit ironic considering that he has a voice that sounds like an ore crusher. (not the most common trait of people usually considered to be "singers").

But he actually compose music as well, and I think he is pretty talented with a few instruments (although I might be wrong about the instruments, im not really sure). So you couldn't really just call him a "singer" either.

I guess trying to establish what music Tom Waits does is like trying to describe the form of a Lovecraftian monster.

How about we call an end to this?

Yeah metal fans tend to argue over this a lot, which genre a band belongs to. And each and every metal fan have their own opinion and most even argue like they were the prime authority in this particular topic.

But metal is actually pretty easy to categorize. If you want a challenge, try defining what genre of music Tom Waits makes. Now that will take some thinking! : ) (Is it jazz? is it blues? Is it modern american folkmusic? No one knows!)

And more often than not you'll reach the conclusion tha Tom Waits is simply Tom Waits. XD

You are not really serious about metal being easy to categorise? There are over 150 different recognisable different subgenres. The argument "metal appears simple, let's understate it's musical value to zero" is commonly presented by peopel who don't really know jack shite about metal and its genres. It is undeniably one of the most diverse and rich musical genres, but regarded as rubbish music fot rubbish people by elitist critics and the likes. Live with it.

The reason metalheads argue over genres and such, is their undying louality to the music. They don't just listen to metal, they live it. In the metal scene, people used to devote their entire lives to the music, and it still hapens today. These debates don't argue wether the music is good or not, so it's not a matter of insecurity. The fans just want to be a part of the music, so they act like they know everything about it. It seems very odd and perhaps a little pathetic to outsiders, but the fans couldn't care any less what one might think.

Now don't take me for a raving lunatic who'll defend all metal to the end. No. There are rubbish metal bnads, just like there are rubbish bands in every genre. There is a lot of easy to categorise generic metal music in many subgenres, but to supppose it's all the same is just ignorant. Go find a band called "behold... the arctopus" or "liquid tension experiment" and tell me that's simple and easy to analyze.

I could be categorised as a metal fan, but my musical taste is far wider. Most anything from free jazz and avantgarde electronic to grindgore and gore metal. And from there all the way up to classical, baroque in particualr.

More so on the topic: Most of teh songs that make me (and many others) feel good are classic rock songs from the 60s and 70s. Bob Dylan, The Who, Queen, The Beatles, and so on. From the time music was made for the sake of music and the passion for it, rather than for lots and losts of $$$.
