Do you have unreasonable standards.

I'm such a gaming whore. My standards are so low even Hermes couldn't limbo under them.
This for post of the year.

I'll play any game as long as it's fun. Not limited to video games, either - I have a growing collection of Board games, as well as a poker set and several decks of cards.

I'm glad that you can get classic games as downloadable titles now - the fact that FF7 sold so well on the PSN clearly shows that graphics aren't as important as hype gameplay, story, and whatnot. I also like the old Sonic titles on the XBLA, and up until July 27th I played Starcraft (along with a bunch of people in my computer science class.)

There are many people who don't even consider themselves hardcore gamers that still love a good retro title, as long as it's fun. That's why Starcraft sold eleven million copies. World of Warcraft doesn't look great, but everyone plays it because just about any modern computer can run it, and it provides fun, not graphics (your mileage may vary, I know mine does, but the numbers don't lie.)

Final Fantasy 13 lowered my standards. (it sounds odd that a AAA-title in a well-recieved series of games that I personally love makes me think this way) I played that game and for the thirty hours I did, my thoughts were "Hey, I should play FF7 again. Man, FF9 was great. Tales of Vesperia was an awesome game. There's a lot of stuff in FF12 I haven't experienced. I should finally beat Legend of Dragoon one of these days."

I guess my story standards are high? If it has a decent story (I'm not expecting Silent Hill 2 quality again anytime soon, mind) I'll choke through it, despite gameplay, character, graphics or anything else issues.

If a game has no story at all, or a story that's very easy to ignore, would you still enjoy it? I mention this because a lot of the games I like barely have a story (Pokémon, Torchlight, etc.) but a lot of my favourites have great stories (like Red Dead Redemption, and Starcraft II.)

I have standards but they are not unreasonable, i generally dislike most of the generic trashware that comes out nowadays but that doesnt prevent me from enjoying the few gems going around.

Games have to be very specifically designed to my tastes for me to enjoy them. There's only been a few games out of the over 200 I have completed in the past 5 years that haven't disappointed me. I like games to be creative, interactively deep and not depressing. I cant stand dead space or batman because they're too dark and repetitive. I don't like Shadow of the colossus because it's so lonely. Expectations are hugely biasing, a highly rated game is under a lot of pressure to perform. I loved Uncharted because it was so happy and fun, but there wasn't much to it in the end, just like any other shooter.

I like games where I could be proud to have worked to develop on it. Where you can tell there was a large variety of skillsets working together. I think assessing the amount of skill and work that went into creating a game is important in judging it, rather than purely having fun with it. People love to criticise GTAIV, but you can really tell it took a lot of work so it didn't disappoint me. It took 6 people to create the internet parody alone and it took me over 10 hours to read and it was hilarious and I really appreciated it. Republican space rangers was brilliant, as were the radio chats and the character dialogues. It's without a doubt the funniest game ever.

My favourite types of games (RPG) are rapidly deteriorating since the heyday in the late 90's because they're no longer economically feasible and instead get watered down to just battles and cutscenes with no depth, more similar to call of duty than an adventure game.

I really love good graphics, I am incredibly critical of graphics, I think FFXIII and Mass Effect 2 have bad graphics. But they're not that important to me, I can really enjoy a 2d game or a cartoony game. Graphics do add something special (why else would we keep buying sports games ever year), but they've become a crutch for developers to improve without making a better game in other ways.

I only have a few standards. The most important though is that

THE CONTROLS MUST BE USABLE

I don't mind if the controls aren't great, but nothing turns me off of a potentially good game like bad controls. Having a great story is always a plus, but it's definitely not necessary. I play old and new games alike so I think I don't have such high standards, but I hold all games to that one rule.

Oh, and I don't like gimmicky shovelware games. But who does really?

If a game isn't entertaining me in 5 minutes, I stop playing it. If it ever stops entertaining me for more than 5 minutes, I stop playing it. I am incompatible with the design manifesto of current MMOs, most especially WoW and similarly grindy eastern MMOs. I have an endless quantity of patience, but I have a low boredom threshold.
