Well according to a test I had to take in order to confirm I have Dysgraphia (its a mental disorder, looks it up bro) and it turns out if you take 100 people into a room, I will be about (on average) the third smartest person, spacial comprehension wise. So yeah, does that count?

I met this one guy in high school. Might be a bit of a stretch to say "know" since we didn't really talk outside of chess club (Then again he didn't really talk outside of chess club) but the dude got top 10 in the province on a university level physics competition.

...before he took high school physics.

But like I say. Very, very, VERY inward individual. I don't think I ever heard him say a sentence longer than 4 words in two years. It was mostly "Your move", "Check", "Checkmate", and "Want to play again?", usually in that order.

This guy was my Chemistry personal tutor and I had lectures with him

The great Professor M Poliakoff. Was he a genius? Yes I would say so. He not only gave me great practical advice in chemistry, but he gave me great life experience. To me, he is a genius.

Genius according to an IQ test? Apparently every man and his dog on the Escapist is one. According to my personal opnion? No. But that may say more about me than anyone else.

I do know a genius. I see him in my bathroom mirror every morning.

... However, I'm still not sure how he got in there or why he stays. Boggles the mind, doesn't it?

Of course you do!

Anyone smart enough to work as a shopping clerk at an apple store can be a genius today!

I could be a genius, you could be a genius, everyone could be a genius!

Where all the geniuses hang out!

Genius is subjective, I've never heard of an exact definition for it. I'm a very intelligent person, in my first year I've recieved a Dean's commendation for my exam results which means I'm among the top of my subject in a university generally rated between 9th and 15th in the UK, but I wouldn't say I'm really a genius, just smart. I've never met anyone who I really think could qualify for that label, I'd reserve that for people such as Einstein, Darwin, Turing, Newton etc.

I know one certified genius. He's a family friend, and he's so lovely. He's also has not even a modicum of common sense, and his spelling is atrocious.

Go figure.

I took one of the Mensa-standardised tests about a decade ago. Supposedly, it was calibrated to measure up to 155 IQ. So, a decade ago I was at 156 or higher. Exactly where the 'genius' split is on the spectrum I haven't bothered finding out though.

Because my genius usually manifests itself through amazing feats of procrastination :p

If you have to take a test to find out if you are a genius then you aren't one.

But to assume by default that your own logic in thinking you are a genius is accurate due to the fact that you think you are a genius, you give evidence that you are most likely not. And that you are vain.

I was quite young when I got tested, and they said then that my IQ was between 150 and 170 to the best of my memory[footnote]lack of accuracy due to age and me not understanding part of the instructions having never done some piece of primary school work, it was a crossword, and I thought your word could... curl, so long as the blocks were attached, because that was how it was explained :p[/footnote]
Personally, I would say more on the 150 side, (I give me 155, not more) but my peers would be very quick to say more like 170, although that is just knowledge, not intelligence that stuns them.

What is the recognised cut-off for genius? Some places say 140, others say that it is 180, in one case I am definitely in, in the second definitely out. So you judge me Escapist...

I will also double check that 150-170 figure, so don't take my word on it yet :p

EDIT: Sorry, it was either 150 or 160, although that won't at all change my genius standings...

Also, the problem with an IQ test is that it's only a snapshot of your intelligence. A lot of children (myself included) develop extremely fast and end up with truly phenomenal IQ scores when young, but their development then slows and their peers catch up.

You're unlikely to be above normal intelligence now I'm afraid, you'd need to be retested rather than use an old score but seventy percent of the population are within fifteen points of the 100 average.

OT: I know a few people who are far more intelligent than me but they don't strike me as 'genius' material.
That's true, but I REALLY don't want to be of the same IQ as most of my peers :(

I know for maths I am in the top 10% or so for my country, And I do damn well in non-language and creative pursuits of many variants (IT, Science, chess et cetera).

Not even my fault. The person who taught us that even gave us notes that I checked. And he was an actuary and head of learning at one of the local universities that taught us that.

If I am a genius (according to the 180 cut-off, no frikking way), then I fully admit that it is NOT in language.

Quite.
Plus the meaning of the 100 average changes over time. The curve shifts upwards because the average intelligence of the population increases over time (so far at least)

I've also never been keen on people equating genius to intellect. You can have an artistic genius or a musical genius. You can be the most intelligent person in the world but if you don't do anything with that intellect it doesn't deserve recognition.

But then, what would I know.
