Do you know your your choice genre in games? If so, tell us why.

Personally, I relized my choice genre when playing oblivion. My freinds kept sending me invites to play Halo 3, and then it hit me I'm getting the fps experiance I enjoy with my bow and the rpg experiance I love. So it hit me I like fps/rpg hybrids, preferably with a post-apocalyptic setting. So I was excited to hear about Hellgate London and Bioshock, but when I bought both I surprisingly didn't like them. Then there was hope, I stepped outside of the vault per se, my friend told me about about Fallout 3, been in love with my genre ever since. In retro-spect I could be wrong, oh well.

im copy pastaing this from another thread because it fits so well. here is the original thread

heres what i wanted to say:

well i personally love stealth action games, like the famed splinter cell or thief series. these games cater to a very specific person, and most people find waiting for the gaurd to come around the corner dull, but i find it exhilerating, i enjoy that experience of extreme power, were the balance can shift at any point, but at that point, my goal is to have absolute control over whether this person lives or dies, without him knowing im even there. i love that feeling of control. its subtle and some find it boring but i dare them to hide in the shadows, jump out at some unsuspecting sap, put a knife to his throat and not get a high.

this would be a good poll question. anyway i would say i like action adventure. this is a pretty broad category and shooters can sometimes fit here also. i play some rpgs, notably mario and luigi games like superstar saga and partners in time, and also the paper mario games (but not super paper mario, that game sucked so much). but i only play rpgs with a faster pace. this is why i probably never got that into runescape, a wow knockoff. i also usually dont like turn based or one click combat. i like zelda and mario a lot, i also like metroid but there arent as many of those. also i dont play classic games very much, they can be obnoxiously difficult, and as yahtzee said old games arent automatically special, they still have to be compared to modern games in terms of fun.

I'd have to say...
1. FPS's
2. RPG's
3. Sandbox-type games
4. Stealth Action(Though the breed is dying somewhat)
A good story can make up for almost any genre however.
EDIT: Except for JRPG's though, always hated Final Fantasy series and the like.

I like just about every genre, so I'll just list a top 3 in no real order:

1) Shooter
2) RPG
3) RTS

But I refuse to play turn based strategy or sports games unless they make a great parody.(SEGA Soccer Slam and Outlaw Golf are two sports games that I liked)

my favorite kind of game is the Assassin's Creed/Prince of Persia type of game.

lots of running, jumping, climbing, and horrible combat.

Adventure. I like to have big open worlds with lots of locations/people/things to interact with, secrets to uncover, and dungeons to conquer.

My feelings exactly, Okami made me realize there need to be more Zelda clones. Like an RPG, minus the overly long battles and awful grind.

I realized I was the same way with shooter/FPS hybrids when I played Mass Effect, then later Bioshock. It was reflected in the fact that I became an archer in the first fable, which I just discovered recently.

I love RTS & Role Playing games (ie C&C or Fallout). I'm entertained by FPS games but I always end up coming back to the more strategic and long term type games. Not sure why they appeal to me, but they do!

FPS/3PS. Probably because I love a game that allows me to blow my enemy to bits. Yeh, I love a good story and good art direction, but I suppose I love my gunplay the most.

I think the best genre for me would be an Adventure/stealth with mild RPG aspects and an epic storyline.
I love the wide-open world of adventure games, and the whole "go through the dungeon to get shineys", but I prefer to play a more cunning, guileful character. RPG aspects make everything better, to me; as you progress through the game, you become more powerful. The storyline, of course, is key.
Oh wait.
I have that game. It's called Dungeons and Dragons (okay, so it's got MAJOR rpg aspects, but still :p)

Horror and survival horror for me. I was first hooked into the genre when I bought and played Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem. The game blew me away with its intense story, and original gameplay elements. The genre can be very hit and miss quality wise, but then again the same can be said for all of them.

My favourite genre is Driving/Racing games (im a bit of a speed junkie), followed by sandbox, RTS, and some FPS's like Mirror's edge.

My preference is FPS cuz there is nothing like shooting something in the back of the head with a shotgun ...
but in recent games i have been disappointed with FPS games due to regenerating health it makes fps less fun and less challanging. I mean since when can you regenerate a shot to the chest.
