Do You Like Anime? Write for The Escapist!

Nice job for whoever gets it, even if it is unpaid, you still get to keep the anime that you get sent to review . Sadly I can't apply, not being in the USA. However, I just have one quick question:

This is an unpaid position - all of the anime will be provided for free, and is yours to keep! Review assignments will be decided at The Escapist's discretion.

Due to format differences and international (and overseas) shipping fees, this position is open to residents of the continental United States only. You must be 18 or older to apply.

Looking at this, it seems that the anime reviewers are sent the anime titles they'll review directly from Themis Media. Does that also apply then for those reviewers and video contributors who use games in their contributions? I refer to things like Zero Punctuation, Unskippable, and general reviews in the articles... I just wonder, are those people specifically sent games as well to review or whatever directly from the company, or do they buy their own games to review? It's just something I've always wondered...

My writing skills are great.
My interest in anime is healthy, with enough sensibility to separate the chaff from the good stuff.
My interest in this is supurb!

But... between college and my part time job, I wouldn't have time. This would have to BE my part time job, and be on par (pay scale) or greater than my current gig ($13/hr). I mean, if it's that and/or more? Sign me UP!

As mentioned in the original post, this is a volunteer, unpaid position. We send you free anime (assignment + bonus), you write it up.

Aye, you did make that clear. Which is why I wouldn't have time. (Cause it'd have to be a part time job, etc etc etc.)

Minor plot information and spoilers are okay. Take a look at some of the other reviews if you need information.

Sounds interesting, although I have seen many more upset non-americans than giddy are-americans making replies so far. This might take you guys a while, but glad to see Princess Mononoke in the list.

Again, like I said, if it were easy and feasible we'd totally include everyone in our community around the world - we're not doing it just to make Americans happy. It sucks, but it's just not in the cards right now :/

I have been watching Anime since i was like 10, and i love writing reviews as well, it is such a shame i cannot apply.

Could send cash and i'd buy the dvds lol. Want job so badly haha.

Too bad these are all relatively mainstream and/or not that good. The only potentially good dubbed of the listed could perhaps be DN, then again, a dub is a dub which is shit.

Good try, though. There are anime that aren't released in America (and probably never will be) that outdo all listed...except maybe TTGL. That was awesome.

If perhaps the selected anime were changed, I would consider it, but these are preliminaries, so it's really your game.

I don't see a problem. Who ever said a review had to be positive or based on indie content? If my writing was worth a damn, I would give this a shot.

The Escapist has a very firm anti-piracy stance, and we will not be reviewing anything that is not out here on disc, that is not physically obtained by the reviewer.

Hey, John, I have an idea! Instead of shipping stuff half a globe away, how about I buy the anime boxset to be reviewed right here, in my country, I send you the receipt and you reimburse me? Better yet, there are anime stores with online web-shops around here, you buy me the stuff and I go collect it. I can assure you, it's no more expensive than in the US (might be even cheaper). Since we usually get what you get in the States, there are English dubs on every disk (that has English dubs in the US).

There, problem solved. So, how 'bout it?

How the anime reviewers work isn't how the other video series works. The Video team has their own arrangements

Well I do watch it on a fairly regular basis, not sure if I'd call myself an expert but I do know when something is crap (and will still watch it all the way through, reason unknown)

I just may go for it, the only one of those I've actually seen some of is Death Note (I tend to stay away from those ones that everyone raves about being absurdly awesome), well I'm off to the internet, err other parts of the internet.

Your choice of anime titles is good for several reasons:
1. They are mainstream.
2. They are good.
3. Actually, Princess Mononoke is not good, it's excellent.
4. I watched three of four, so I must be 75% otaku

I'll try to write something for you. This is good opportunity to test my English writing skills.

1. I'm 15.
2. It's been reviewed, and in a rage-inducing way, no less (somehow I think it's a series aimed at tropers).

I'd review Gurren Lagann if I were 18, though.

I watch a lot of anime, I write long winded reviews on other sites, Im an american. {something I dont think I have said proudly before] I may not get the position but I am excited to try. I try to always come from a non bias and as spoiler free possible point of view.

Oh...my! I have to say I pretty much jumped out of my chair and danced around my apartment when I read this article. I'm really excited to give it a shot!

I have only one question. I'm currently a college student with a decent enough schedule to pursue this and in need of some good volunteer service to boot. Is the "still in school" part going to be a potential concern? Or is it merely a matter of time management abilities?

I have mixed feelings about this. A few years ago, I'd have leaped for joy at this kind of offer, but I've since come to accept that anime is like any other entertainment media. In other words, it's dominated largely by garbage and mediocrity, with the occasional sparkling gem to be found if you go looking for it. The promise of free anime is not really enough to make me want to add the additional responsibility and deadline on top of my already mountainous piles of college work (you know it's going to be a bad semester when you start the first week out by buying 15 books). That said, as a writer I see this as a potential opportunity to boost my (currently nonexistent) career and that's a serious plus. But is it enough to make me want to take the job?
Well, let me ask a few clarifying questions. First, how often are you looking to have a review? Are we talking a once a week thing, once every two weeks, once a month? Secondly, are there any restrictions on the method of review, aside from the above-mentioned length?
Basically, how much work would you be demanding of me? Because, while I'm not afraid of work, my schooling takes precedence over all other things and if the demands of this are going to interfere with that, then I must decline.

And on a side note, I just wrote two anime reviews on my DeviantArt page as an attempt to experiment with different forms of writing. I'd like to think that the second one was actually a really good review. Alas, neither of them was on the list. Although I could easily do Mononoke Hime - it's one of my favorites.
