International and overseas shipping is a pain in the neck, and frankly more trouble than it's worth - and that's ignoring format differences, as the DVDs that we're sent are all NTSC, and we don't really want to require anyone to buy special hardware just to do a volunteer position.
Understandable, however I have been close with companies such as Manga Entertainment, ADV Films, MVM and Bandai over here in the UK for a number of years and in the past would be mailed DVDs to screen to clubs, conventions or to review. All these were non-profitable jobs that I did just because I'm a fan and kept me happy and others happy too.

It's nice you want to get hold of the DVDs for reviewers but perhaps it's possible for them to get hold of discs themselves?

I'd also like to add would be nice to have an international's perspective. :)
The trouble with that, of course, is - what if they move on for whatever reason? If the relationship is "Company sends DVD to reviewer, reviewer writes reviews," that's all fine and dandy until the reviewer needs to buckle down on school. If the distributor sends it to us and we send it out, then if our reviewer needs to move on then we can just find another one. It's much less potentially problematic.

While I find that incredibly hard to wrap my head around, having ordered or arranged packages to be sent to me from private outlets or individuals overseas probably numbering in the thousands, with hardly a single problem, that's certainly your prerogative.
I have a hunch you probably paid or reimbursed for shipping, though, most of the time ;)

I sent in the application and the samples a few hours ago. Do you know when I'll get a reply?
You may not get a reply at all, unfortunately. We'll announce the winners here and contact them, so if you weren't selected then this is the only notification you'll get.

why did you have to say 18 and older? i could do just as good a job and i'm 16!..sigh o well better luck next time i guess.
Legal reasons involving cross-state employment, even volunteer stuff.

How about a 'latest to hit the internet', rather than just north america? Or even just any old anime out there. You can't have done them all yet.
Because we're not going to budge from our firm anti-piracy stance. Sorry.

Mate, I'm pretty sure Crunchyroll.com has the full authority. Its the reason they had to rebuild their archives since last year. Anyway thats where I get my fix, so I don't know if thats ok or not.

Understandable, John Funk. :) I guess I never considered this mainly because I haven't been in education for over 4 years and don't intend to return to the job scene for a long time as I've got a baby on the way. Free time taken up by a hobby I enjoy is all but a bonus to me.

How much influence does previous standing in the community have? I saw this and considered taking a shot at it, but aside from some lurking, I've got nothing. I only just signed up now because of this. So, here's hoping it doesn't ruin my chances, I suppose.

Well, whatever. We'll see. At first, I expected to see a lot of applicants posting in the thread. ...Then I read through it, and most of the posts are people are complaining about the restrictions, so it's probably worth a shot. I'm a big anime fan, and I enjoy writing. It would be nice to get some professional experience.

Pretty much my thoughts exactly. I too only recently made an account and that was really for posting on Yahtzee's stuff (which branched out to other articles as well) but as far as forums are concerned I don't spend much time on the Escapist. I mean I visit the Escapist all the time and I've probably seen every Zero Punctuation 10 times or more but I never really felt the need to post anything until recently.

Also looking through this thread I agree that most potential candidates seem to be underage or foreign which, while sucky for them, is good for me I suppose.

I entered my stuff on the first day and really think it'd be nice to voice my opinion, as well as get free anime. It'd also probably be nice to say "oh by the way I write articles quasi-professionally" to my English teacher.

Also I don't know who publishes all the various anime series out there but should I ever come across a series that doesn't have a Japanese with Subtitles option I might explode. I hate dubs. So. Much. Even the not so bad ones annoy the hell out of me. Hearing anime characters speak English just feels weird to me, unless its like the American President visiting Japan or something like that.

Also if John Funk reads this at any point, can the reviewer request to review a series ever? Probably not all the time but I think it'd be a good idea if the reviewer had found a previously unreviewed series that may or may not be more on the obscure side that's really good that they could promote it somewhat.

I would love to, but I fear I don't love it enough to be considered.

And I'm not American.
Exactly this. My knowledge of anime extends as far reaching as Lucky Star and Rosario + Vampire (which is bordering on soft-core hentai, watch it and you'll see what I mean)
Trust me that's nothing compared to Kiss X Sis

Community standing has literally no bearing on your acceptance whatsoever, and we don't even go by your screen name (we go by real name). We're looking for talented writers, not people who happened to join two years ago.

I just went and watched the first episode, and I now stand corrected.

I thought the same way when I first saw Rosario Vampire... then I saw Kiss x Sis; oh it gets more graphic on the third OVA.
I just went and watched the first episode, and I now stand corrected.

This may be a cheesy question, but would we be allowed to go by a pen name if we already have one?

I'd really like to do this, but I'll most likely be moving within the next 2-3 months. Can I still try, or would that be too much of a hassle? Thanks.

I would be all over this, but I can't guarantee a deadline being met consistently with my job. Milestones take over my personal life once every 6 weeks or so.

I dont see Dragon Ball, DBZ or Tenchi Muyo on that list, and thus you shall not be getting me to do your work you lazy bums.
