By writing "hip hop", do you mean the whole culture or just rap music?
Because the music is called rap, not hip hop.
Hip Hop is the music and rapping is what the master of ceremonies does over the top

Honestly, it is hard for me to really get into any genre or band. I am a bit picky as far as that goes. I don't like something just because it is linked to a certain genre, or hate it for that same reason.

Hip-hop though...guess I am indifferent to it.

As long as I don't call it "Hip Hop", which always reminds me of that Kangaroo Jack show from Big Daddy.
Yes, I like rap. There's tons of great stuff out there.
Like that.

Black Eyed Peas (yes, before Fergie they actually made music, and their first album is quite good)

In hip-hop it's all about the lyrics, trust me. :)
You couldn't be more right the first two (pre fergie) albums were wicked Hip Hop, how the mighty have fallen eh

to this?

if ever there was proof of selling out, here it is
It's such a shame cos every time someone tells me they like BEP I always get sad when they like their new rubbish pop music

It's about delivery, style, concepts. The best way to make an example of this is listening to Em's "No love", and then listening to Kayne "love lockdown" video, and grasp the differences in just..........everything. It's totally different types of music.
Actually, Hip Hop refers more to a type of culture and rap is the music.
I can hear differences between two different rap artists the same way I hear differences between The Who and The Beatles, or Bob Dylan and Tom Waits.

I actually accidentaly found out about their first albums, since I first heard their "latest" songs and thus decided they aren't any good. Well, no more, that is. :)

BTW, I'm leaving this here:

Forever Close My Eyes :
In midst of such madness I grasped that elusive real.
You believe to know those surrounding your visual.
So typical of life to slap me to humiliate.
Left irate I rely only on my hidden traits to stay the tide.
All is mine to lose in my mind although I have already lost all.
I am appalled by these very friendly sights.
I remain polite in proper society.
They view me as the sewer.

My yesterdays don't matter now, they're gone.
Your careless expression left my wrists torn.
Yesterdays don't matter now, you're gone
Shattered glass of empty bottles cut my palms.

Saturated thoughts of you weigh so heavy
On a mind so weary.
Always thought we'd have plenty.
Never thought I'd be here now,
Without she who breaths for me.
I gasp for that life.
Oh, to lay my head mongst your curves!
Oh, to speak those words.

I stare from broken window
Eye's fixed upon your symbol.
I suppose all things do pass
Wrist grazing glass,
White light at last gathers at feet caked in earth.
My movements submerged by thickness in words.
Laid my head mongst your curves
Grown too old for your tones of voice to scold
Attempt evils untold
I'll fold when you laugh again.
I'll smile when I'm dead.

My yesterdays don't matter now, they're gone.
Your careless expression left my wrists torn.
Yesterdays don't matter now, you're gone
Shattered glass of empty bottles cut my palms.

Does that keep you content?
My blood flows a velvet red
Into that familiar stream of tears
With passion I spit upon that empty face.
Were you disgraced when I broke your sacred circle?
I must admit I was afraid this ugly world would hurt you
As you hurt me.

Crossed paths to speak but for an instant.

Now gone without one single trace.
What is it about my vocal pattern which leaves me speaking to self?
Ugly blood pours from warm heartfelt vase...
Flowers scattered on a cold stone floor...
Connect nevermore.
I am torn by my lack of emotions and plentitude of tears.
Catalyst heart hurts none, yet weeps
Am I dead lord?
Am I truly dead?

My yesterdays don't matter now, they're gone.
Your careless expression left my wrists torn.
Yesterdays don't matter now, you're gone
Shattered glass of empty bottles cut my palms.

What happened to the times we spent dreaming of days to come?
So invincible then,
Before these days i learned to bleed
On my knees i prayed for us.
As what we were slipped between my fingers.
Those memories still linger.

Anger permeates....
Its not our idiosyncrasies that leave us ill.
I wish to build yet it seems all i touch dies.
Endless drone of sighs to convince this world we exist.
Loveless bliss.
Content just to be spent at nights end.
Fish for your reasons in the sea of ignorance.
As if in trance, succumb to an ageless waltz of thought.
Why were we brought together only to fall apart?

My yesterdays don't matter now, they're gone.
Your careless expression left my wrists torn.
Yesterdays don't matter now, you're gone
Shattered glass of empty bottles cut my palms.

I gaze upon you one final time.
I only gaze to truly know what was once mine.
I toast with final swig of liquid life.
Lay my head mongst familiar curves
And forever close my eyes.
In midst of such madness I grasped that elusive real.
You believe to know those surrounding your visual.
So typical of life to slap me to humiliate.
Left irate I rely only on my hidden traits to stay the tide.

Also, this (it's the best hip-hop album I've heard so far; The GZA - Liquid Swords):

That's partially true. But it's not fully true, because it is ultimately two different genres. Gucci Mane is a much different style of artist compared to.............P. Diddy.

I like hip hop & rap. It's quite depressing to go through this site and find that my opinion is part of a very, very small minority. :(

I see what you're saying. There is a distinction, so I can agree.

I fucking love hip hop.

Its just so organic and honest.

Gansta Rap, underground, R&B, all of it.

Granted there are some artists who suck, but there is plenty of brilliant artistic flows to find if you know where to look.

PS. Kanye Wests new album is fucking great. The man is back with a vengence.

Albums to buy if you want to potentially get in to good hip hop.

GZA - Liquid Swords (see a few posts above for example)

Cannible Ox - The Cold Vein (forgoten gem of an album)

Wu Tang Clan - Enter the 36 chambers (really any wu albulm is good, save for 8 diagrams and maybe Wu Tang Forever)

Zero - any album (most underated rapper in the US according to New York times

Dr. Dre - The Chronic (not the 2000 version)

Watch this if you dont beleive me about kanye being back.

I would always take a good old Rock song over ANY Hip-Hop song. But I would take Hip-Hop over rap.

I like the sound but I find self-promotion distasteful most of the time...I certainly don't find it relatable, it could at least be done with some humour.

A Tribe Called Quest remains one of my absolute favorite music groups ever, regardless of genre.
Well then for you

Here's a Funky introduction of how nice I am
Tell your mother tell your father send a telegram
I'm like an energiser cos you see I last long
and my crew is never whack because we stand strong

I am with you on the Quest tip mate, back when hip hop had a wicked vibe
I thank you, good sir. I don't listen to them as often as I used to, though I really should. Their first two albums are two of my absolute favorites, after all.

I'm glad there is a larger group of those on the Escapist that enjoy hip hop. Music diversity is always important, and some good hip hop never hurt.

Common, Nas, and other artists with soulful and meaningful music often can pique my interest.
I love you. But totally in a platonic way.

I love me some good hip-hop. Atmosphere, Swollen Members, Jedi Mind Tricks, Kanye, Eminem, Dre...I could go on. But won't. There's a lot of good things that can come out of that music, in the beats and the lyrics both. Sometimes, the beats are simply incredible in their depth and complexity, sometimes the lyrics are for the same. And, when both meet in the middle and complement each other beautifully....well, it's aural pleasure and poetry all at once.

I'll never understand the thin vein of hatred for Hip-Hop that seems to underly a good portion of this community...

You are very wrong on this. Hip-Hop is a genre of music, of which both Kanye and Em perform. Rapping is simply reciting words, usually poetry, in rhythm. You can rap over hip-hop beats, you can rap over drum and bass. You can rap over rock, and you can rap over classical. You can even rap a capella.
Hip-hop is not defined by rapping, and rapping isn't defined by hip-hop.

You can have rap without hip-hop, and you can have hip-hop without rap, you can also (most commonly) have both at once.
