Personally i hate prequels that relate to the next game, since you know whats going to happen afterwards anyway. I dont like any of the the prequels to my fav game ever FF7 but i love sequels.

Another Example is GTA VC stories. YOu know what youre doing will be worth nothing anyway since youve played GTA : VC... am i alone here or would you rather play what happens before first?

I dont mind things like Star Wars because you dont know exactly what had happened in the past but you know that Zack will die before FF7 starts and you know that Vic will die in Vice City.

What do you think? Am i on my own?

I liike them, they provide more backstory and depth to some already great stories. I personally was hoping that Bioshock 2 would be a prequel. Imagine how cool it would be to see rapture fall from one of the tourists.

In games, I guess they're alright, unless it's Star Wars. They almost ruined the concept of prequels.

As long as they're done right meaning:

If you played the previous game(s) theres something in it for you
If you haven't played any previous game in the series you can still get a good time from the game
The game offers more than just the same game with slighty better graphics

I like how they give backstory to the original game. I think it's cool, seeing things in a prequel and realizing "Oh! So that's why...[something about the original game]."

Besides, they're useful if you've made too many sequels and have already ended the game's story. Though chances are the game isn't good any more by then...

pre and sequels both generally suck. The best examples of sequels WORKING I can think of are the FF series *up UNTIL X2 and DIRGE OF CERBERUS ruined it* They utilized pieces of the storyline to connect the universes and make them feel familiar, but didn't directly recycle worlds, characters, or villains. They had their stereotypical roles, but not direct copies...

LION KING 1 1/2 FTW.

In all seriousness, they can be very good. I just haven't played any that I can think of aside from a couple Zelda titles which I enjoyed.

If done well, prequels and sequels can be good. Why the hell do people despise them so much!? Yes there are quite a few pre and sequels that suck, but there are also plenty of fantastic ones. Prequels are an odd thing to judge though as the ending has been determined and it has to stick to canon and not seem like an effortless ripoff. Prequels are not bad in the sense that you sometimes know how they close, it's how the story is presented and the events leading up to that clear as day ending that make or break a prequel.

Hell on of my favorite prequels is Crisis Core because it does a good job at being both a prequel AND a stand alone story. Yes you know Zack is gonna die but the presentation is done in a fashion that you almost forget and the ending still has impact on the player. It's not, "oh here's the part where he dies, game over", then the ending comes and it's handled in a manner thats still shocking.

They can be good if the material that its based on supports it. But if its out of know where and has little to no context with the actual story then no.

They've already done loads of books that serve as sequels and prequels to the games, as well as a couple that run alongside the events of the games. Plus Halo Wars was a prequel, detailing the events of 6 years after the Human-Covenant War started.

OT, I don't mind prequels, or sequels, as long as they remain true to story and characters and aren't any sort of misjudged attempt at milking the cow, as it were. So for example, I absolutely love any Halo sequel or prequel, but Star Wars is getting out of hand (as if it hadn't after the books all started being written...).

It only annoys me when the prequel is titled like a sequel.

Examples:
Metal Gear Solid 3 (set forty years before the original MGS)
Devil May Series. (Story wise, DMC goes in this order; DMC3, DMC, DMC4, DMC2.... WTF?!)
