Squats Forever!

Not played since 3rd edition, I felt it took too much out of 2nd ed. (Even though some of it needed taking out, such as the overly complex hand to hand).

I like to play computer games based on them now and then, and I would love to pick up 40k/WH/BFG but just not got the time, money or friends that still play it.

To an extent.
I like the models; way back in the mists of time I played Rogue Trader and had an army but now I just paint for fun, playing the games has no interest to me, I just collect the models I like the look of. I'll read the novels that aren't based around war but I avoid the majority of the wargame & universe fluff, it's OK as the background for a wargame but it doesn't really make all that much sense as a sensible sci fi universe, there's just too many unbelievabilty issues even when you discount the magical fantasy elements.
It wasn't so bad when I first got into it because there wasn't so much fluff, you were free to imagine it for yourself, but as the years have gone by they have filled in the gaps with more and more ludicrous crap. To an extent it's just playing to the fanboys, they focus on the Grimdark and ignore the rest...there is an amount of sensibility in the 40K universe , it's just that GW never pays any attention to it.

You should see the Lost. It's a thousand pages of pure win.
But after the next thousand pages after that then it fails.

But yeah I love 40k and fantasy and I play too! :D

Tyranids for 40k and High elves for Fantasy.

I dont know if 40k could be more dystopian. The lore is almost depressing.

I like the fluff, kinda. Not enough to read any of the books or anything, but it's a fun universe.

Don't really like the game. Other tabletop miniatures games have more tactical choice involved in army choice and on the tabletop. 40k is all just a bit obvious and dull.
Pretty much this, although I did read a bunch of the books. Problem with 40k, though, is that "In the grimdark grimdark of the grimdark grimdark, there is only grimdark" gets really old after a while.
read the ciaphas cain novels- they actually have a good amount of humour in, unlike most (i.e all) the other 40k non ork fluff.
I have, at least the first 3 or 4. The first one is really, good, but they get very samey very fast.

The best 40k book series in my opinion, though, is probably the Eisenhorn trilogy. It has right around the correct amount of Grimdark? to be enjoyable, has quite decent characters, and is quite, well, epic.

My main problem with 40k books, however, is that as far as I'm aware, they're all about the humans, with maybe a few borderline exceptions. A book about the Orks, Eldar or Tau, preferably with no humans to be seen anywhere would be excellent.
There is a new eldar series of books coming out, the first ones about an eldar falling down the path of the aspect warrior, and another one is about the seers, but I dont know anything else about them I.E if there are any humans in them. I need to read the eisenhorn stuff meself, ive just never got round to it due to our shops lack of Black library shelf space.

It's horribly over the top, completely and utterly insane and makes no sense whatsoever.

Therefore I like it.

W40K is something I can just switch my brain off and just go FOR THE EMPRAH!!! while reading about it or something. It's delicious nonsensical pulp I don't have to think about. I'd love to play the board game, sadly such things are impossible to do in this shit little village.

I love Warhammer 40.000 lore and the whole idea of a "Gothic fantasy science fiction".
Can't wait till the Dark Millenium MMORPG is out.

I like both the tabletop and the pc rts but in all seriousness I did not like Dawn of War 2, it just felt like Company of Heroes if no base building was involved and a lot less tactical, but I was a fan of the first games up till Soulstorm included. Tau and Orkz ftw! xD

Too fething right, apart from the Armour of Contempt. Speaking of which, the Black Library have an open submissions window until the 31st, on the off chance that anyone's interested.

I used to play the game, but got bored/ran out of money. Nowadays I no longer play, but I still love the universe and the books, and often browse the lore forums from time to time.

"Path of the Warrior" by Gav Thorpe, right? This seems potentially excellent, ordering now. Hey, thanks, mate. I've been waiting for something like this to be written.

Yes, I do like it. It is a cool universe that I can in no way, ever, afford. PC RTS gaming will have to suffice.
"and a thousands psykers are sacrificed every day so he may never truly die"

Such is the power of the astronomicon.

I love the literature and the games, not so into the table top stuff as i used to be. I pretty much own the whole black library.

I much prefer the Last Chancer novels. But apart from that everything else about your post is correct!

Ayup.

I paid a fucklouad of money once upon a time, and I still remember it fondly. The game is good, the miniatures well done, usually, and fighting always is a lot of fun.

Unless my poor IA is slaughtered by fuckers hidden in a tin can. Which is often.

I read this insanely large thing immediately after my last GF left me. Focused my mind wonderfully, even if it is just a huuuge sequence of the Ghosts getting shot at in different places.

Trying to arrange a 12,000 point apocalypse game. Because I want to use my full collection. So yes, I do rather like 40k.

Hold your tongue, heretic!
The God Emperor is immortal!
Actually in the latest fluff the tech adepts of Mars have discovered faults with the golden throne which are beyond their ability to repair...

I think the above also answers the initial thread question.

I like the theme, the setting and the background, but the game has been leaving much to be desired. I'm not a SPHEESSS MUHRINE player, so I'm left in the dust. Very annoying.
