necrons and black templar space marines, don't play though, just paint and model, I enjoy that more than the game, plus I always lose the dice.

some quick questions. I want to get into 40k but reading everything here confuses me.

what are regiments and what are the differences etc.

and what is converting?
I either want to get into imperial guard or those ones that look like robots (really blanking out on them)
Regiments are just that, different sections of an Imperial Guard army. For Example, Cadian 101st, Catachan 21st.

Spacemarines have 'chapters' e.g. Ultramarines, Black Templar, Salamaders.

Converting is when you add something that needs some modification on the model itself. E.g. gluing wings from furies to the back of a choas marine to make it have a jump pack. Or just for cosmetic reasons e.g. having a banner or standing on a skull.

Edit: Oh BTW I collect Necrons (1500pts) but may start a new army for planetstrike (Choas for attackers and nurgle/tzeentch defenders).

Heh, Chaos Space Marines, close to 4k. And they're Word Bearers so i Guess i can run bout 1k of Daemons too.

and got a Guard army, 2k of the Haldon 122nd Heavy Recon (Yeah doesn't fit but bleh) which has, at the moment, me converting the Plastic Baneblade with an eccentric Tank commander. and i don't mean the one who points from the cupola yelling "THAR THEY BE!" sorta things, i mean the one on a converted deckchair on the front of the Baneblade just in front of the Heavy bolter Cupola mount (which I've converted to be lascannons), sitting with a cup of coffee in one hand, a las pistol in the other, a handlebar 'stache and a potted plant sitting to the side giving him some shade as he listens to the radio next to him. that sorta eccentric.

Oh and @ultrajoe i meet your challenge and i raise you a match, if i ever meet you. sounds like it'll be a match worth remembering.

actually its not all that expensive to start now as it used to be.

the assault on black reach starter set is £40 and a set for the citadel starter paints that comes with a brush it costs £21 its even cheaper if you have a freind to split the cost of the assault on black reach its even better.

though i cant really advocate its cheapness as my armies have cost me a fair old whack ( the eldar and dark eldar are ridiculously expensive.)

does it matter what regiment i have?

and can I modify anything I.e gluing a beam cannon from a gundam onto a tank or trooper?

Been playing for 4-5 years now.

I collect Space Marine, mostly. Pale Horsemen being my own chapter, but I've been thinking about collecting Ultramarines, or try to do a pre-Heresy Luna Wolves strike force.

I've also done Chaos, Imperial Guard, and Daemonhunters.

My sis also just gave me her gigantic 3000pt Tyranid force.

For Imperial Guard it goes not matter what regiment you have, it is purely cosmetic. However you may want to know the 'theme' of that regiment, e.g. Catachan are jungle fighters so while having lots of tanks and heavy weapons is legal, it may not be in keeping with the theme.

You can only convert something (for gaming anyway) if it is 'legal' in the codex. Meaning that if it says a person can have such weapons then modelling them in such a way is okay (e.g. giving a commisar a powerweapon - whether it be from imperial guard spree or other source). Giving all your troopers plasma cannons is not legal and therefore not allowed, although you can use other races stuff to convert your models to give a unique look as long as it adequatley represents (and doesn't look out of place) what you are trying to achieve. E.g. instead of using the normal choas raptor jumppacks you can stick wings from deamons on them as they both have the same function and it does not look out of the norm (choas marines have all sorts of mutations. However sticking daemonic wings on an imperial guard trooper is not good (even though it may look it).

Most other things such as scenery, cloaks, etc are okay.

it doesnt matter what regiment you have at all part of 40k is you making your own army personal to yourself.

umm i dont know what a beam cannon looks like myself but i would say no it would have to look imperial gaurdsy otherwise i dont think it would be allowed into matches ( you wouldnt have any stats for the weapon) besides anything and everything from gundam seems to fire pure lasers of blow you the fuck up and this one tank may be a wee bit over powered.

If you were to go with Imperial Guard, different regiments have different rules depending on the flavor of the army. For example: Death Korps of Krieg, trench warfare and siege specialists, use fewer mechanized vehicles due to their training and have traits that allow them to not run like cowards when a Carnifex starts eating them. On the other hand, Armageddon Steel Legion uses mostly mechanized units which can deploy extremely rapidly to disgorge troops. Unless you buy Cadian or one of the other new plastic kits, expect to mod guys into the less mainstream armies.

Necrons, the terminator-esque guys, are very homogeneous, and are in a state of flux at the moment. Their codex is a little out of date, their modifying potential is very small, and they either fare very well or very badly against most armies. But hey, if painting a shit-ton of tiny robots exactly the same is your bag, go for it.

But, that's just IG and 'crons. There's also Space Marines, Inquisition, Sisters of Battle, Daemonhunters, Chaos Marines, Chaos Daemons, Tau, Tyranids, Eldar, Dark Eldar, and Orks. Within most of those there are subdivisions, such as Tyranid Hive Fleet Kraken, the Ork Bad Moons, Eldar craftworld Biel-tan, Novamarines, etc.

If you want to get into it, find a game shop or battle bunker near where you live, then go check out some players when they show up to fight. Ask questions, read a codex, go check a novel out of the library, look at websites.

As for modifying...the "rules" are vague; I suppose if your gundam beam cannon can proxy as a Shadowsword barrel or something, then it's a good mod. Hell, it's all about being creative with your army, as long as you can play a match with it.

I'm really interested in 40k, but I don't really have the money to start collecting and I don't know anyone who plays.

If I do start, Ork's are the army I'm probably gonna go with.
best thing to do is find someone who may be interested split the cost of assault on black reach and you have the orks and the other person has the marines its what that starter set was really meant for
my two 40k armies are marines and ork, but i do not have an up to date set of rules... and you sir may well have just relit the old fires

my orks are from the goff clan and the marines keep changing the name of their chapter, but its one i made up, they are a dirty grey (armour washed codex grey) and their symbol is a simple cross i got them because i wanted some pretty tanks (and i prefer predators to the leman russ before any ig criticize)
my good sir the ig are the place for pretty tanks tyoe into google image search the fortress of arrogance or wolfbane you just cant beat ig tanks.

also glad to see someone else might get beack into it and i offer to you a waaaagh, *ahem* WAAAAGHHH!! that is all.
I did say pretty tanks, not super heavy (and probabally more effective) tanks, i liked the look of the sleeker marine predators then the leman russ
