Do you play games for achievements?

As others have said, I don't buy games JUST for the achievements and wouldn't skip a game I was looking forward to if it had crap ones but I think they add to the fun and I like to get as many as I can.

For a lot of games it has made me play more than I would have done if the achievements weren't there, like re-playing on Hard difficulty or something similar. Just doing this with Arkham Asylum atm but don't think I will be getting all the challenges as I seem to be incredibly inept at keeping up a combo! -_-

i personally don't care for achievements, there just there and appear whenever i move two steps

so now i rant
why am i being "rewarded" for playing the game? also what does it prove? that all i have is time to waste trying to get 100 nut shots in saints row 2? or that i have the skills to watch the credits and find out who was in charge of achievements? (Eat lead has the achievement for watching the credits btw)

Well that was fun

This discussion is really funny as it is something me and my peers are forever arguing about!
My Freind has a gamerscore around 37k and i have only just after owning a 360 for nearly 2 years got a mere 10k.However i spend more time socialisng playing mutiplayers going to work i have a gf etc i live my life and see that the bigger your gs as a reflection to how little you actually interact with the real world.... i taunt him by saying its a digital penis extension anyway.Just thought id say my piece =)

i dont have the financial means to buy games constantly to get achievements, but they are fun to get, and it feels kinda satisfying. like when i locked the last few weapons in TF2 yesterday, solely by getting of the milestones.

only thing the ps3 (which im getting) lacks is gamerscore. it feels more satisfying than trophies to me.

Halo 3 Vidmaster Challenge perchance?

OT; Yes, but it doesn't take up my whole first playthrough. I usually wait until I'm finished to go back and replay to get achievements.

Meh, I buy games to have fun, I do play games and collect the achievements and I'le go out of my way to do the extra stuff just to collect achievement points I know there arbitrary and they serve little use, it's just fun to watch your score go up and watch as your score towers you friends scores, plus it's nice to see your self rewarded for doing some thing cool.

I don't however buy games "just" for achievements, the achievements are just a little some thing that comes with the game and I enjoy collecting, I buy games on whether they look good or not.

Depends on the game. I played PES 2009 for achivements, but even then I quit and went back to playing an actual sport.

Nope. I'll enjoy trying to get the achievments in a game I buy, but I'll never buy it just to get the acheivments. I don't even really try to get all the acheivments in games I have anyway.

Achievements are nice so I can have proof of "Yeah, I did that", but the whole score thing is sort of shallow.

When I first got a 360 I didn't care about the achievements, I didn't see the point. When they added trophies to the PS3 I still didn't see the point. I play games through however I want to and if I pick achievements up along the way it's just a number.
However then I started to get into the whole thing a little bit - like I really got into Fallout 3 and after finishing the main quests I still wanted to play it, so I kept wandering around looking for things to do. Using the achievements list as a to-do list was an excellent way to squeeze every last drop out of the game. Doing all the side quests you missed is one thing, but if you're still looking for stuff to do then doing random things like tracking down all 5 Super Mutant Behemoths to get an achievement can keep you occupied. But the promise of achievements won't make me do anything I don't want to do in a less interesting game.

No, I don't buy games for achievements. I do try to get as many as I can, after I've finished the story, though.

I don't normally seek them out, just accumulate them along the way. However, if a game is good, I do find myself seeking out some of them because they add to the overall fun and gameplay enjoyment.

I only actively hunt for them when I already finished the game (or if the game is Mass Effect. The achievements actually do something for you). If they're really really out of the way, I may not get around to them for a while or even start them. Currently doing weapon runs on Ninja Gaiden 2, soon to be at 6k points.

Some of them are worthwhile fun, like "Stunt Jumps" in GTA or Saints Row, but some of them are really pointless... like taunting someone or dying 100 times....

I typically will pick up games that I'm interested in, and then once I've played it for a bit I'll take a look at the achievements and see what's left and what I think would be worth doing... some of them I'll do anyways if it doesn't take much time.... Fable II had a few like that.

I would never buy a games solely for the achievements (though, pretty much every game has them now so it's kind of a moot point) but, I do strive to get all the achievements of any game I do buy.

Meh... I find the difficult ones pointless.
I don't hop on ball and start juggling with no reward but to say I did it. Give me unlockables and I might be more inclined to do the damned things.
Other than that I just don't care.

I've played a few games for achievements, like F.E.A.R. Files and F.E.A.R. 2, but I'm not completely obsessed with achievements. I'd never stoop to levels involving, say, playing Jumper or Avatar.
