Do you prefer protagonists that have the same race and nationality as you?

Nationality doesnt really bother me as there are generally british characters somewhere, but with race i would like it if there were more Indian characters in the world of games. Off the top of my head i can only think of Dhalsim from street fighter and thats about it for Indian characters, in sports games and create your own character games its not so bad as i can generally make myself but i would like more choice

I never cared. In fact if I was playing a white American in Muramasa the Demon Blade I would have a problem with it.

In most games, it doesn't matter to me who/what the character is. Give me a good gameplay mechanic and exactly who the character is floats to the back of my mind. This changes if the game is one that lets you create the main character. In those cases, the game itself is usually a bit cookie cutter and unfocused and thus half of the immersion factor is your custom character. In those instances, the inability to create a female ends up being a deal breaker.

I prefer a protagonist with whom I can understand, agree with or sympathize, so the American protagonists are a massive minus for me in most games.

No, I don't care what race the protagonist is, but since I'm Swedish, I get really excited when I see you can play as a Swedish person. Like in Mercenaries! ^^ Oh Mattias... *drifts away into happy thoughts of explosions*

No, after all, I never had a problem with these characters not representing me in the first place.

Forget race, what about gender?
That did occur to me. However, I didn't include gender because...

a) It's been discussed many times before.
b) I already know that many people don't particularly like playing a character of the opposite gender.
c) There are loads of games with female protagonists. (Although admittedly not as many as there are males.)
d) It's never particularly bothered me. (For example, my Commander Shepard is female.)

Race is the LAST thing by which I judge...well, anything! As long as the character has a sense of humor and some level of badass in him/her, I'll be fine.

The only game I've played where the main character is a Scot is CoD4, and he doesn't even speak till MW2, so it's irrelevant.

I've actually never really thought about it, it's an interesting topic but no I don't think it would matter to me at all what race/nationality a protagonist is.
Wasn't Niko Bellic foreign? Honestly doesn't bother me.

Protaganists dont tend to be white british ( excluding James Bond ( excluding Shaun Connery )), the villains often are though, and I usually end up feeling more comfortable around them instead.

I'm British. I suppose i prefer playing as such, but i'm quite used to playing as an American.

I always get giddy when Brits are in American games/films though - Like Call of Duty!

Though I don't 100% agree, when my best friend and I talked about this a few months ago, I thought his opinion held some merit:

No. I don't need, or even really want, them to match me. However, I would like it if they tended to match each other. There is just something disconcerting about the fact that every game that has a group of protagonists always seems to have a team that looks like a rainbow. I don't need racial pandering, but I do like realism. It just seems unrealistic to me that if we built a team of the best good guys in the world, that every corner of the earth would be faithfully represented. Sometimes there are just some nations which don't have a ready-made superhero built for the job that is better than the second-best guy that one of the other nations could produce. I mean, if the Chinese had five guys who are all better than the best American for this mission, then unless we're bringing six members, I'm betting the American isn't going on this trip.

TL;DR: "Best in the world" =/= "Best from each nation" I'd like to see more of the first rather than the second. You know, the Olympic medal winners rather than simply the best participant from each team.
