Do you recommend FFIX?

I recently finished FFVII as my first Final Fantasy ever. It's now one of my favorite games ever. I then tried to play X, but my computer- ahem, I mean completely legal PS2, sucks too much to run it, so I thought I would either play VIII or IX, and it seems like IX is more popular and better rated. So for someone who has never played any of the classic FFs, and thoroughly enjoyed FFVII, would you recommend IX? And if you feel like typing more, what are the best and worst things about it, and ow does it compare to the others?

FFIX and FFVIII are unarguably the BEST in the series (in my honest opinion), don't expect IX to be anything like VII though as IX was really a Nostalgia trip for old fans. I would recommend playing all of them minus XIII, XIV and XI.

My personal fav's are
IX
VIII
X
VI
V
IV
I
VII
II
III
XIII
And I haven't played XI and XIV because they're MMO's and I just haven't played XII.

IX is pretty much the least divisive game among the fanbase, generally well-liked by all.

It still has it's haters, but it really is the least divisive. Which is quite an accomplishment by FF fanbase standards.

WOULD I RECCOMEND IT!?!?!?! DOES THE POPE SHIT IN THE WOODS?! It's not as dark as 7 but as a game it is effing genius. My second favourite in the series and an absolute MUST PLAY!

FFIX is my favorite installment... it's actually the only FF after the jump to disc (FFVII and above) that I'd recommend.

And in my opinion, FFVIII is actually the worse of the bunch :p... see the Spoony Experiments, 11 part, over an hour long analysis for more detail [http://spoonyexperiment.com/category/final-fantasy-viii/].

Prepare for something different, FFIX is a throwback the old school Final Fantasies(I-V) and to really enjoy it playing a few of those ought to help. Of them I'd recommend I for old school plot-free RPGing or IV for a bigger(though still not at VII's level) narrative. Or v if you're into customization. I'd also recommend VI, since it's bloody fantastic.

i didn't care for 9, but on the other hand, it had the fewest absolutely intolerable characters. wow. don't think i ever realized that before... i didn't care for Zidane, but i didn't despise him like i did Rinoa, Tidus, Yuna, ummm... Luke Skywalker from 12 or his vanilla girlfriend, or Angsty McAngrypants from 13.

I would, yes.

FF IX is my favorite in the series.
I recently bought it on PS Store, and found that it was still as good as I remember it.

Well worth the 10$ in my opinion.

In a word: HIGHLY.

Endearing characters, classic job/battle system, solid story (well, 96% of it); as Onyx already said, you'll probably find the fewest number of people who didn't like IX compared to most other Final Fantasies.

There's probably no chance of you enjoying VIII now however, as it is not your first FF game (oh yes, I went there).

It's by far my favourite FF. The only one I've stuck with 'til the end too.

A thousand times yes.

The story is mostly your typical FF scenario but it get's relatively deep, especially for one poor little sod who sometimes you just can't help feeling sorry for.

Throw in some old school character classes, references right across the board and (yet another) top notch soundtrack from the one and only Nobuo Uematsu, you can probably expect to at least like this game.

Ooo Ooo I wanna parrot the same thing too, heh! Yes, I would recommend FFIX the most out of all the ones I've played/seen through. I think it's the best because it's turned back the emo angst of 7 and 8 to a much more manageable levels. Also it's got some decently amusing moments peppered throughout without removing some really tear inducing moments. Out of the whole cast there's only one character that I don't really care about, but that's partly because of how late they come to the party and I'm already in my rut of who I like to use. Also as has been said there is such a throwback feel to older FFs that won't mean much to you, but it's not the kind of thing that keeps you out of the loop with inside jokes. It just flavors the world in a certain light for those who know what to look for.

I would still say you should play 8 though, it's my next favorite Final Fantasy so if you got the time and inclination I'd do both.

I always found the story to stop dead whenever I played it. It's okay, but the ATE system always killed the pacing and crippled the combat.

IX is a masterpiece - a tad predictable at parts, but the characters grip you so much that you eat it up anyway.

That said, IV and VI are still my faves, with X being solid as well, now get off my lawn.

I recommend IX purely for it's simplicity and whimsicality. No fussing with materia or needing to draw spells from caterpillars. Just make sure you always have the White Mage, or a crap-ton of potions, and you're good to go.

Easily the best in the series, simple, beautiful and final fantasy at it's best. If you were to ever play my favourite JRPG, Final Fantasy and ps1 game, FFIX would tick all those boxes

Haha, I totally read that as FFXIV for some reason. Stay far away if you know what's good for you. :D
