Do you respect your police force?

As Finland statistically has one of the most efficient and least corrupt police forces in the world, I respect them highly. The training is though and I know that anyone who comes through it has the will to serve and protect. They have my utmost respect.

People seem to have a very poor view of the police, by the way. At least here, most people who deal with the police simply get angry and call them lazy and/or worthless. Truth is, the police force does so much behind the scenes that we never get to see, that would be good for us to see. I grew up in a family of cops, and I have seen police deparments in action. So much is done that we never realize is being done, and then when someone gets a speeding ticket, theyre assholes. When someone gets mad, they need to take it out on someone. And that someone is way too often the police.

I fully consider the police the good guys. At least here.

I respect police officers based entirely on the way they behave. I don't have a lot of respect for them as a group because in my area they tend to get worse at their job the more of them there are present. Individually they're often courteous and do their best to uphold the law. In groups they seem to try to belittle people and shoot off more threats of consequences and other poor ways of doing their job.

As far as being afraid of the law (mostly its consequences) goes. Yes I'm not exactly excited whenever I have to talk to an officer while I'm doing anything I may get in trouble for. I don't like paying fines. I especially don't like being quizzed about my innocence in any given situation.

I usually don't call the police because I'm content to work things out for myself, but when it's necessary I have faith in them if they're called.
Once when I was assaulted (punched for no reason by somebody I'd never met) in a McDonald's the staff called the police and within minutes they arrived, arrested the drunk who'd hit me and took my statement before making a swift exit. I didn't call them but I'd say that was a pretty decent job they did.

EDIT: I'm from Ontario, Canada btw. So that's the O.P.P. I'm talking about.

No, I feel they're corrupt, lazy and getting paid far too much. They also act as a gang, I seen police drive illegally all the time and even harass citizens for no reason.

In Toronto they just got a salary increase and the majority of the police are making over $100,000 a year; which is far and above the national average. You shouldn't be making over 100 grand for sitting in your car at a construction site "providing security".
Dude, and as a fellow trontonian i can agree with you that the majority are just straight up not doing a good job and getting payed way too much. But with my own mom on the police force i know a little about the inside of it, well i wont deny that she sometimes sucks at her job as story's i heard suggest. she was actually not given the pay raise and makes like 70,000 a year while that might seem like a lot compared to other government officials its not and she has worked the grave yard shift at jane and finch (i'm sure you've heard stories) for close to 8 years now and has been directly fired upon in close to 35 different intentness and still can't get transferred out of the area because of "burosicty in the force" or her higher ups can't get off there asses and manage shit properly, because it actually *god no* might force them to do some fucking work for a change.

so, not all cops are bad (just most of them.

I respect/trust my local police force in almost exactly the same measure as I respect/trust the local gangs of Crips and Hell's Angels. A few are alright. I am actually friends with a couple, but as institutions, I would take great pains to avoid fucking with them, but I sure as fuck wouldn't count on them to help me in a time of need, or view them as anything more than a bunch of thugs making profit by stealing from and hurting others.

My city is known for its crime and for the most part yes I do respect some of the officers. Mainly the ones who do thier jobs, whilst on the other hand I see many of them break laws. Some officers drive rather reckless and speed often, I think setting a good example would make thier lives just a tad easier.

i live in franklin county virginia so it's pretty "backwoods" if you catch my meaning, and there are only two or three officers i have any respect for. and that's only because of personal encounters, that i won't go in to detail about, where they were very curtious and sympathetic. that might not sound like much but round these parts, if you get an officer to treat you like a human being it's quite refreshing.

other than those three? nope, don't trust da po-po's!!

I respect An Gardaí as an individual but I believe the general young public in Ireland don't respect them.

Japanese cops are crap. The only things they are good at are giving directions and forcing confessions from innocent suspects.

I know most of the current cops in my city by name and not through trouble with the law.

Because of that I don't trust any of them to do their job well or at all for that matter

Nope. I respect individual officers based on how much hell they go through and because they don't abuse their power, but being a cop does not automatically grant any more respect from me than just being a civvy.
This, but I do respect cops above "civvies" a little bit. Individual ones more, less, or indifferent based on what they have done.

From a philosofical point of view I love them because a society without law would be horrible. And without some sort of force to enforce those laws, even if said force is less than omnipotent, they may as wel not be there at all.

But I'd be lying if I said I have nothing but positive feelings for them. A consequence of growing up in an area where cops are so spineless you could fold them like a napkin.

How spineless you ask? Storytime!

Once upon a time my mother was riding her bike and some other guy on a bike, clearly drunk or high, swerved all the way across the road right into her. Than he yelled incomprehensibly at her for a bit and fled. My dad went to the police station to report the guy but the cop there basically told him he'd better not because the guy's friends may try to avenge him and they'd probably never arrest the guy anyway. My dad said he didn't care and insisted but the cop kept refusing to do his job and eventually my dad got mad and the cop threw him out of the station.

You want more? Alright!

My friend's uncle has a bar in town. Once, a barfight started and he called the police. They said they were on it but never showed up. A few hours after the fight ended and the bar was destroyed, they called back and asked if it was over. When my friend's uncle, somewhat confused, said yes they replied "Oh good than we can finally come over to note the damages."
Job wel done guys!

In my one dealing witht the local police I found them polite and helpful. Knowing what they (and military people) go through in training and their daily job, means that my default reaction is respect.

Yeah, I've only had like, two dealings with them, but both of those times were just them pulling over to see if I was ok because I was sitting on a bench in the middle of the night on a Saturday. Got a lift home both times. Nice blokes.

The cops in my town are pretty lazy, but at least they don't bother anyone. I'd hate to have to rely on them if someone tried to shoot up a school though.

I respect them about as much as I respect anyone else I don't know well. So basically, enough respect to be courteous to them, but not much more.

no. plain and simple, blanket statement. no. nobody deserves authority over anyone else, and that power can and WILL corrupt. i see cops as less than human. i see them as scum. think about this. when you're out driving and pass a cop, do you feel safer? or do you feel your heart skip a beat and jump for a minute? you check your speed, hope all your lights are working properly, hope he's having a good day and hope that there's not a single thing he could find wrong with your situation.

"people believe that the function of the police is to fight crime, and that's not true. the function of the police is social control, and protection of property."

EDIT: i was going to post a police brutality video, but there are too many, and they're too disturbing to even choose from. but look any of them up yourself and ask if that's something that deserves your respect. FTP.

I give them the same respect they give me, 9/10 times they will treat me as a criminal off the bat and I extend the courtesy.

But the rare few do have some manners and I have no problem with them, even tho near no real crimes get resolved, but they are awfully skilled on them speeding tickets.

This guys got it.

Except for me it's more I like them till I have a reason to dislike them.
