I smile at the attractive people mostly.

I'll smile if there's an attractive gal or if the other person smiles first. I'm not a very smiley guy.

I'm not sure I smile at people so much as I just generally smile. I'm a happy person.

People only seem to smile back or start talking to me if I already know them, or have a particularly noticeable geeky t-shirt on with a reference they recognise. (Nyan-cat t-shirt ftw!)

As a general rule (due to being a teenage boy who's a little too self confident), I smile at attractive strangers, or adults who look at me suspiciously.
Although, my town is a cess pit, so I only really smile at men who think I'm going to stab them with a screwdriver.

If they look me in the face.

I do an awkward wave with my right hand too.

Without lifting it from my side...

I'm weird >.>

I smile at people who look at me/ smile first. It's mostly the older folk that smile back, and alot more do now that I live somewhere rural/suburban than in the city.

5 year old me: "Mom told me never to talk (or smile) at strangers"
16 year old me: "Hannah doesn't smile ever. Every time I smile I die a little"
Current me: Sure, sometimes, if I'm in the right neighborhood.

I am usually always polite, although mostly towards my elders, seeing as those younger than me seem to hold manners in total disregard. I know I'm generalizing here but I can only go by what I see.
I will add that I do often have the urge to go up to London and spend the day on the Underground, being nice to commuters all day, just to confuse them.
Seriously, I hate the underground, but no one on there seems even the slightest bit happy with their life, and if you are nice to them, they give you a look of such utter confusion, as if the mere thought of letting someone off or on before yourself is somehow alien.
I hated London, people were dicks. One guy seemed like he was on a holy mission to walk down every person that even slightly got in his way. When he came at me I cocked my shoulder and sent him flying. So satisfying.

I only smile if they smile at me first. And even then, I do so reluctantly. I'm not a big fan of smiling artificially.

I'm happy that most people at least smile back. Maybe it's just where I live, but I really can't stand walking by dozens of people on the street and no one even notices that there's another human right next to them.

The people I've known since I was a kid don't even smile or wave when I do first. (BTW I'm not an insufferable bastard so there has been no provocation)

Ex. I'm outside with my family playing in the yard with the dog, and a couple walks by, not 5 feet from me; they look straight at me, I smile/wave and say "How are ya, guys?" and they just look away and keep walking.

I notice that happening all the time to me, my friends, many other people.

I say hell ya and smile or do something ridiculous, I'm tired of lifeless people.

I usually just give a nod in their direction to acknowledge the fact that they exist, but saying hello or good day/evening is not out of the question. I always verbally greet the elderly, and give right of way when needed. Living in Texas, this is not too uncommon.

I nod if a person I know has waves or said hello. I'm not a fan of faking a smile for the hell of it. I may crack a smile if a cute guy smiles at me, or if I see someone I don't know.

The only smiles I get in the street are from freinds or girls that seem fairly attractive (or people I know, or people who can even slightly remember my appearance from when we have actually talked (I know quite a few people who are really forgetful)).

This may actually be because if I don't know the person, or if it's not a fairly attractive girl, then I probably won't look at them long enough to see that they're smiling at me.

Now to the part where I may (or may not...) smile back. If it's a friend I'll start thinking of something to say and greet them with some sort of smile depending on what my face looks like, my close friends may be greeted with a smirk.

Attractive girls will be met with me thinking too hard on "I don't know her", "She's nice" and so on, and will result in my not concentrating on smiling at them and then after 10 seconds of thinking "Wow, a pretty girl smiled at me" and then going on to "Why don't I smile at pretty girls"

The furthest this has gone has been on a day when I shaved and put on a shirt. I left the house on my way to lectures and walking down the road Girl 1 smiles at me, what happens is the previous paragraph, around the corner I'm still thinking "Wow, a pretty..." to realise Girl 2 smiled at me, then around another corner thinking "Damn, 2 girls, today will be a good day?", Girl 3 smiles at me, and then I was just completely baffled and couldn't help but think of "Why don't I smile at pretty girls".

That was actually the first time I realised I didn't do it much, with a few more on seperate days.

Sorry for all the words!

Hell, yeah I do. I smile, I wave or nod at the very least. I usually get a positive response, so I figure enough people dont't mind being noticed on the street.

I smile if people smile at me but otherwise I am largely stuck in my thoughts when walking.

If I'm looking up I have a really bad habit of having to smile at everyone, it feels like I'm doing it quite sheepishly to be polite. The responce are pretty good though so I can't complain.

If I'm have a shit day or mood I do have a face like a slapped arse and I just look straight through peopole, even if they're smiling at me.
