I consider it to be disrespectful. Would you appreciate someone spitting at your feet?

Yes, i do it myself, but only in the ditches next to a road. (I'm still stcuk to bicycle for transport). It doesn't bother me when people do that, but when you just do it like in the middle of the city, that is very rude.

Wow, I'm surprised by all the comments that find it horrendously disgusting.

Yup. I do spit on the street. It's outside. Rain will wash it away eventually. It's not like throwing something on the ground that is going to stay there for an eternity.

I do try to spit where people won't walk, though.

Fun fact its technically illegal in Britian to spit in the street. It was banned to try and stop the spread of TB i believe, so if your in Britain a cop could legally arrest and fine you for spitting.
Really? jeez, the ammount of times i've got wasted and pissed on my front door is uncountable. Glad to know whats acceptble here. Rule Brittania haha

I spit where I want when I want, and if someone has a problem with it I generally tell them to fuck off and mind their own business.

Yes I spit when I'm outdoors. I will continue to do so until there are complimentary Kleenex boxes on every block and/or someone develops a side effect free allergy medication. In case you couldn't guess trees and other plant life are not my friends.

No, it's fucking disgusting, and it makes anyone who does it look fucking disgusting too. No exceptions. Oh, wait, you don't care what other people think of you? Knowing that you're doing something repulsive, and what the majority of people find repulsive, and then you carry on doing it anyway? Nevermind "other people", have some goddamn self-respect.

Can you tell I loathe this yet? Can you? :D *spin* *clap* *jazzhands*

Yep. Smoking generates a lot of mucus that you constantly want to get rid of. I consider spitting on the street my privelige for all the shit I constantly have to suffer and listen to because I smoke.
Gotta agree with this guy, as a smoker myself. Even though it's a disgusting habit I would rather spit that mucus out then swallow it back in.
I'm a smoker, too. But I would never spit in the street or in public, it's fucking gross. I don't want spit on my shoe and I shouldn't have to watch out for spit when I'm walking.

It's filthy, I'll instantly judge someone who does it as being a nasty Pig. Even worse if you phlegm in the street.

It's really only acceptable if you're, say, chocking or having a really bad coughing fit. You cannot control or help those things.

Yup. If I have a buildup of phlegm, and I'm outdoors, I'm not going to swallow it. My apologies to people who have never had pneumonia and don't know what it's like to have an uncontrollable buildup of mucus that's choking you... but I'm not going to choke for the sake of your social comfort. I will, of course, attempt to deposit the stuff in a place where no one is going to be walking/sitting/standing any time soon.

I'm not saying it's charming, just that there's a reason. I don't do it to piss people off, it's because I cough up nasty things sometimes. Again, not charming. But it's not that big a deal. It's gone from the street very quickly and I don't understand why it bothers people so much. People kissing or blowing their nose in a handkerchief are doing things that are just as disgusting, hygiene-wise.

Exactly, that's what I think too. I was also really surprised to find so many people with such a strong opinion against spitting :S
The more I read these comments the more I feel like I'm some sort of hideous monster destroying the world. Surely there is something far more offensive than spitting.

On occasion, when I'm sick or otherwise contextually obliged, but it's not a habit. And when I do I try to find a bush or garden or something to spit into so it's not actually on the street or footpath.
