Do you take the reviews here seriously?

No review should influence your descision to buy a game unless it clearly points out things you know yourself you would or wouldn't like about it.

To me, Yahtzee's reviews are just anecdote-filled jokey rants aimed at people who have already played the games.

Yahtzee and movie bob aren't reviewers, they are critics. Their job is to provide critique of their respective media.
If a reviewer is different from a critic, how.
This thing is bad for this reason. This is criticism.

Here are the good things, here are the failures, here's my overall outlook on the product and whether or not you should play/read/watch it. This is reviewing.

Neither Yahtzee or movie bab care whether you actually DO act on their advice and Yahtzee has even said you shouldn't act on what he says since he is a guy with an opinion, not The guy with the infallible opinion.

i like watching yahtzee's reviews cause he has a similar taste for games as i do
You mean you hate everything except Psychonauts?
Don't forget Portal, Silent Hill 2, and Left 4 Dead 2.

On Topic: No, I really do not take the reviews here that seriously. I don't take any game review seriously. Mainly because the only review I actually trust is my own. Yeah, Yahtzee can say the game is bad but I could rent it and think it is good. In the end the only review I take seriously is my own.

Eh, I pay attention to the reviews, but I don't really "take them seriously". I.E. if a reviewer tells me the game spend more time on A than B, I'll take note of it. Usually the things reviewers don't like games spending time on are the things I like though. If the reviewer says the controls, graphics, or blah blah blah sucks, I ignore them. If a reviewer complains about glitches, I try and check out forums and find out when these glitches occur, then decide if I care or not about it.

But I take all of Yahtzee's critiques with a planet's worth of salt. Very different taste in games than his.

Nope. But to be fair, I don't take any review seriously. I just watch them to get a basic idea of what the game might be like. The escapist is a lot less bias than most reviewers that I've seen though, so that's always nice to see here.

What I like about Yahtzee's reviews, (aside from the humor, of course) is that he does a very good job of pointing out the bullshit and little ridiculous things in games that we sort of just accept and don't really question. I won't scour all of his videos for examples, but one that comes to mind is his comments on the improbably high number of chest-high walls in every damned area of Gears of War 2. He's good at pointing out silly conceits made for gameplay such as that. What I dislike about Yahtzee, however, is how political (for lack of a better word) his reviews and picks are. I do not honestly believe that he thought Saints Row 2 was really the best game that came out that year, but he had to choose a game to fit his persona and attitude.

I watch Moviebob's reviews occasionally. I won't say he has bad taste, but I will say that I disagree with a lot of his assessments.

As for the other reviews on the site, I read them to generally just get an idea of what a game has in store. I don't take the Escapist's (or any other news outlet, really) say as the final word.

I pay more attention to the review forum of the Escapist then I do to Yahtzee when it comes to choosing a game.

Moviebob's not half bad, and the Escapist reviews are pretty good in themselves, but nothing beats having an actual gamer play and then review a game.

I find I disagree with roughly half the reviewers out there, so I don't really take them into consideration when buying games. I like reading reviews for products I've bought, though, to see what other people got out of the same game/movie/whatnot.

As far as Yahtzee go, I watch his reviews for a laugh, not serious criticism, though he have some clever points now and then. I haven't watched much Moviebob, so I don't really know about him.

I take Moviebob's reviews somewhat seriously, and I say somewhat because some of his concepts don't make sense to me (watch his Inglourious Basterds review to see what I'm talking about).

Yahtzee I take with a grain of salt, like his GOW3 review.

What Yahtzee does aren't reviews. Reviewers review and Critics do critiques. Even at that they are full of comedy but that is how he gets his point across. So no I don't seriously take into account his critiques when I buy a game.

MovieBob seems to have similar tastes to mine, so if he recommends a movie I'm likely to go see it if I have the chance.

But Yahtzee? Hell no. His reviews are funny and definitely entertaining, but there's no way that I'd only buy games that he recommends because if I did then my collection would have, like, three games in it. His criticism is usually warranted but since it's all his reviews focus on you never really get a sense of what the game really is like, just of what its flaws are.

Nah I don't wait around for Yahtzee to review a game i'm already interested to buy it but if it's one i'm not familiar with it like PSN downloads or something then the other reviews might sway my decision

Same applies to moviebob he can sell me on movies of partial interest.

I only really watch ZP, and I take his reviews seriously only so far as considering whether his complaints are a dealbreaker for me. A lot of times there aren't--for instance, as much as I love Yahtzee, I also love Final Fantasy. But when it comes to something like Dead to Rights: Retribution, I know I'd hate the camera shake so I don't buy it.

I don't take any reviews very seriously anymore, if I like a game I like it I don't really care what other people think about it.
