Yeah, but you gotta admit, things were really starting to feel a bit constricted there, lore wise. I mean, Rebecca Chambers on a train fighting a leech soprano? Yeesh. And that whole item swapping and dropping system kinda killed the momentum for me. It was a sign of Capcom changing things for the sake of it. I mean, it was refreshing not having to deal with Umbrella and all the previous baggage and just focus on a bunch of new idiot villains making monsters.dscross said:I think a lot of people were where you were at the time. I wasn't though. I fucking loved every game they brought out in that style. Zero and REmake were fantastic and CV is one of my favs. Ok, the story was shit in Zero but the gameplay was great (although they really shouldn't have got rid of the box system, but it still worked). And let's be honest, it's never been high art in storytelling anyway.
You like it better than Code Veronica, REmake, Zero or 4? You must really love it. I liked it a lot but it doesn't top anything up to 4 for me.BabyfartsMcgeezaks said:Yes, RE7 is the best Resident Evil game we've had since RE3, even if it is in first person.
I never really liked 4 that much, I always thought RE5 was better. But yeah, RE7 was really good, it was a shame that the last third of the game was so mediocre though.dscross said:You like it better than Code Veronica, REmake, Zero or 4? You must really love it. I think the only one with horribly dated controls is 4. Old tank controls work fine with fixed camera angles (they are the ONLY thing that works fine with them) but are really out of place in over-the-shoulder TPS.B-Cell said:yes it is. original games are not age well due to bad camera and control.dscross said:It's good... but you think it's better than REmake or the originals!? :O (I agree about RE4)B-Cell said:but resident evil 7 is best in series.
resident evil 4 was overrated.
Fine, but if you need to hamper the gameplay to make your game scary, then it doesn't say much about the game. RE4 (which is my #1 RE game) was still scary a lot of the time, even with an over the shoulder camera.dscross said:I think that's partly what made them scary. The camera angles were there so you couldn't see what was coming up next. Don't get me wrong, I think 7 is great, but not a patch on the old style. It also looked like a B horror movie, which is what they were in the style of.
I highly doubt it will be a similar remake as that of RE1. Little parts of Leon's campaign in RE6 reminded of RE2 so I think it will be somewhat similar to that. Ofcourse, it's obviously quite the process to convert the kind of game RE2 was into a 3D game. But, RE7 has given me a lot of faith they can pull it off. The fact alone that in the two years since they announced the remake they still haven't shown anything is probably telling that they realize expectations are high. Well, either that or the project dissolved. Hope not.Hawki said:That said, if the RE2 remake is something on the level as the RE1 remake, then the fixed camera angles are something I'd be quite willing to live with (though as heretical as this is, for me, RE3>RE2).
The camera angles never hampered anything for me. It made the experience more exciting and full of suspense, if anything. They were very different types of games anyway after 4. I feel like we are comparing chalk and cheese. I think it's down to preference as to which style you prefer at that point. Not that I don't like 4, because I do. It's just not my preferred RE style. The old ones are some of my favourite games ever, whereas RE4 does not crack my top 20, as much as I did enjoy it.Hawki said:Fine, but if you need to hamper the gameplay to make your game scary, then it doesn't say much about the game. I dont think this will be case. Most RE2 fans would be devastated if they did that. I don't think Capcom would do that to old fans - they'll stay faithful to the original style for remakes. They'll save the new styles for new entries in the series.stroopwafel said:I highly doubt it will be a similar remake as that of RE1. I'll be honest, I can live with it being dissolved. Difference is, IMO, RE1 (the original) is easily one of the weakest RE games out there, and benefitted a lot from its remake. I'm not as enamored with RE2 as other people (takes the #4 spot for me in the series), but I think it holds up much better than its predecessor.stroopwafel said:Well, either that or the project dissolved. While I don't consider it the best, I will say that it's one of the best games ever made. It's such a well designed game. It's a game that I could replay over and over again and still not get bored.stroopwafel said:As for Resident Evil 4 being overrated I definitely disagree. I still consider that the best game ever made.
Why would they go back to action style in the main series though when RE7 has been popular? That wouldn't be very commercially smart.Maximum Bert said:Well its one of their most lucrative franchises so they are going to keep shovelling them out regardless. Apart from Resi and Monster Hunter they really dont have a lot anymore which is a bit shocking when you consider the incredible amount of classic IP they have which is possibly second only to Nintendo imo.
I think they could make another traditional Resi game if thats what you mean but I dont think they ever will beyond remakes. Personally I think they will go back to a more action focused dynamic and continue slowly killing the franchise. Heck they dont even seem to be able to make fighters very much anymore they are just trading their reputation for money by gauging their customers.
In short I dont expect anything good to come from Capcom anymore but on the rare occasion it does happen its a nice surprise.
Action will always be more popular than slow and plodding. And I have a feeling once the first-person indie horror fad has died down Resident Evil is going to drop it just as quickly and look to the next big thing in gaming.dscross said:Why would they go back to action style in the main series though when RE7 has been popular?
