Do you think Microsoft will use bluray with theyre next console?

I love my 360 to bits but one of its biggest failings is that the DVD disk size is starting to age a bit for example final fantasy having to be cut downa bit graphically because it wouldnt fit on the disk so do you think microsoft will adopt bluray into their next console or do you think they might have something else up their sleeve?

well, 2014 (earliest logical estimate given kinnect's sales) is a ways away, by then I hope that devs manage to create games big and epic enough to be limited by DVD's, so yeah, they'll use something.

But I think it'll be HD-DVD, because that's almost propitiatory between them and toshiba, and using it would effectively eliminate pirates copying discs unless the physically make the HD-DVD-writer themselves/still have one from when that format was sold, which doesn't seem plausible.

The two options I foresee them using with their new console is most likely going to be either heavy reliance on digital distribution or Solid State Drives, not bigger than say a credit card, which you would use not unlike the first three generations of Nintendo consoles.

I personally believe we'll see an external blu-ray player for the 360 at some point in the near future, if movies are the concern.

Other than that, I think our next generation of consoles won't be based on DVD or Blu-Ray. I think we'll still have physical media but it will be something as yet undetermined. For now if any game comes on more than one DVD its usually a bloated and over-written piece of junk anyway, so I'm good with current tech.

HD-DVD has officially been a dead format since 2008, so I don't think that's happening.

I don't believe the next gen console will even use an optical drive as its primary. With storage costs on hard drives dropping so dramatically and internet speeds increasing, as well as the limitations of optical drive formats becoming evident with games, I can see the majority of games for next gen consoles being direct downloads over an xbox live equivalent. If a hard copy is needed for whatever reason, the customer pays a small surcharge for printing/shipping, something like what MS does with Digital River already for new OS releases.

If BluRay movies overtake DVDs in sales by the time the next generation is in the works, then Microsoft would be crazy not to include a Bluray drive.

but it would be a smart move on microsofts part to take the rights for it and use it, since they could fit more data on them per disk, and it would just become an exclusive for their games.

although this would've been a smart move to do 2 years ago..not 4-5 years from now. by then it'll all probably be SSD and digital distribution..which either way im fine with.

I think they have too. The only reason why I haven't start collecting blu-rays is because the 360 doesn't support them. And I don't want separate devices for movies and games.

The XBox does have a peripheral that let it use HD-DVD. It sold pitifully and everybody laughed at them. It was not a good idea then, and it certainly isn't now. It may be the better format, but it lost. Spending money on the technology would be money they'd never see again.

Sony is part of (and a charter member of) the BDA (Blu Ray Disc Association).

They are partial rights holders, but never owned complete rights, as it was developed in tandem with several other companies. They also licensed technology from Microsoft in order to make BD work.

Anyone who tells you that Sony owns it or that it won't come to a MS product because it's a Sony thing is flat out wrong. They probably also believe HD-DVD was a Microsoft product.
