Which genres will succeed? Which will die? Are bands getting more talented, or are computers being used to replace talent?

There will always be talented musicians, in every genre.
And there will always be way more untalented musicians than there will be talented ones.
I think music is getting neither better nor worse, classics will always be made.
And I think nostalgia will always play a big part when you grow older, thinking back to the food 'ol days.

In the end it is a matter of personal taste.

I cant really say if music in general is getting better or worse. Though I can say that I think pop music is generally getting worse nowadays. For example, with the summer closing in you can expect a tidal wave of crappy summer hits getting puked out by your radio every day.

It's about even, it's getting better in some cases but worst in others. Rock continues to rock and improve. But pop, rap, and hip-hop were better in their old days, especially hip-hop.

Better. More indie and alternative have been coming out. Like kings of Leon and the new green day album. I still remember American Idiot...........*Runs off to listen to it now*.

Talented music is still comingout, but I would like to think of the commercial pop-punk music groups that only ever talk about romance (You know, like McFly and Jonas Brothers etc.) as eventually dieing out.

I love classic rock (70s) still, and I think there are some bands today that are still good, but music alone the lines of "pop" is getting worse... Although... I think people were probably saying the same things in the 80s, and that's when bands like Rush and Guns and Roses were king.

What I think I'm vaguely trying to attempt to say is, there will always be "bad" music. And yes, using computers to make up stuff is being used too much today... But you just need to go out there and look for the good music. Look hard if you have to.

Music is getting better, it's just hard to find find something to suit you.
Also if you judge music quality in some period based on mainstream music every discussion is redundant.

Hard to say. I loathe rap and hip hop, and indie isnt really independant any more is it, what with the huge record companies and similar sounds. However, some really decent rock and metal bands have been coming out or releasing albums, which is good. But zeppelin, pink floyd and hendrix will always be among the greats.

It's a turning point to be honest. If not now, in the next few years it'll be. Music is in danger of becoming pretty stale if you ask me.

While I believe the best era for music was cca 1992 - 2007. What can I say, I'm a sucker for old school emo & post-hardcore bands [mineral, drive like jehu].

There are still some amazing albums coming out, but most of them, are... well, they're good, but nothing that hasn't been heard before. It's hard for something to come out, that blows you away, because it's something previously unheard. Consider electronic music, the whole thing was pushed so far, that you've basically covered most of it, from techno to dnb, to idm considering rhythms and from ambient to noise. Lately everything has been a rehash of what's been made before. Some odd combos here and there. But nothing spectacular.

The problem with saying the best music is now, is that only the most influential bands will stand the test of time, and it's hard to judge the current era, we'll have to wait, 10-20 years before we can completely say.

I think there are still some brilliant creative minds out there, but in general, I'd say everything is about to lead to a decline, since music has been hyper produced for the past 50 years, it's hard to come up with something new. I'd say one of the few aspects that hasn't been completely explored is merging electronic music with rock music.

On the other hand, Finks new album is pure win. ^^

I've said that in the million threads we've had on this subject since I became more active in March.

Music getting worse strikes me as a largely psychological thing. When looking at 'old music' the classics are always easy to access as the good songs are better remember. The dross that was about at the time is forgotten about as no one cares about it. As such there's a kind of passive filtering so the good stuff shines out.
When looking at new music, a lot of the time thanks to the radio, you are bombarded with everything that is recent, generally regardless of quality. The abysmal songs that will disapear quickly, alongside the stuff that will be worth listening to again.
