Music for me seems to be getting worse in my opinion. I'm a rock/metal fan and watching music channels at college and having to see dance, pop and hip-hop seemingly take over is annoying.

As far as the music I personally listen to which is metal, it seems to be pretty consistent. Though most Thrash bands that used to kick major ass are getting worse, the rise of black and melodic death metal seems to even that out.

However in the popular music scene, and in general WAAAAAAAAAAAAY worse. Between rap, hiphop, Emo rock and that Jonas brothers hanah montana crap, talent is pretty much completely gone in mainstream music.

I think it's a sad state of affairs when the most popular thing to come out of sweden since abba is Basshunter...
How about No Fun At All or Millencolin? They're both pretty good. And honestly I haven't heard of Basshunter.
Well, they're popular in the UK, in certain circles

But i much prefer my swedish metal

Opeth and In flames "for the win"

Music is subjectively good but musicians with actual talent aren't making as much of a living as ones who make shit so i would say that the music business is the same as it always has been.

There will always be talented musicians, in every genre.
And there will always be way more untalented musicians than there will be talented ones.
I think music is getting neither better nor worse, classics will always be made.
And I think nostalgia will always play a big part when you grow older, thinking back to the food 'ol days.

In the end it is a matter of personal taste.
This, but replace the word "food" with "good" :p

Also I'd like to add that I think computers have made music better by opening up new sounds that would never have been possible before and giving us dance music, hooray for computers!

EDIT: After all of 7 seconds worth of careful consideration I've realised that music is better than ever, there's so much diversity and almost all the music in the world is at your fingertips, anyone who says modern music sucks is probably doesn't even know what the internet is.

Dont turn to popular media then, search the web, go to a local show. If your into rock and Metal there is plenty of good music out their. MTV and Much just doesn't have it.

I would say the most common stuff that is coming out is now going down hill. For instance, I can't stand Lady Gaga and music of the sort. I'm going to throw myself into the firing line when I say, these are the bands I love!

List:

Boy Kill Boy
Three Days Grace
Does It Offend You, Yeah?
System of a Down
Maximum The Hormone
(The)Bloodhound Gang
Tears for Fears

And so on...the most common music that people like now does my head in!

Well actually the Internet is the only music player I use now so I am getting some rock/metal music...but even then a good amount of bands consider singing to be shouting.

Rap has sucked since Eminem stopped producing albums regulary (although his new one kicks bottom) Also DMX and Obie Trice's new shit is well...not as good as their early stuff

50 cent was and always will be crap.

Punk has stopped existing, Prog rock seems to be coming back (Muse) and Alternative Rock has one of the biggest this century (Coldplay), Oasis has started making better music, but is slowly dieing...lots of pop needs to die quickly and R.E.M. has started to sort themselves out

So a mixed state of affairs in the music industry, but mainly positive

I would have to say worse. Based on the fact that there are very few bands that I look forward to hearing new material from. White stripes, raconteurs and Tito and Tarantula continue to put out amazing records...I might just be bitter because so many of the bands I loved as a child have dead members (Nirvana, Alice in chains, Hendrix, Zeppelin, Beatles) or just went in a different direction that I just didn't like very much...Greenday...they were better before they were up themselves.

For those who watch MTV thanks to their little sisters (i.e. Me) Your seeing a lot less emo bands getting played, and those that are played are focused less on the whiny emo concepts and more about the athstetic of the genre in order to appeal to emos, scenes, and hipsters alike. Headbanger's ball is beginning to suck on the teat of metalcore and any -core in general while many old guard Death metal and black metal bands make good albums in obscurity. I dislike prog metal and I don't like it's inclusion in the genre, as it's pretty much an insult to it.

I don't know too much about Opeth - I've heard a few tracks but none I could name. In Flames, however are one of my favourite Metal bands (I don't listen to much). They were the first Metal band I saw, they were supporting Motorhead on their (Motorhead's) 30[sup]th[/sup] anniversary tour - it was supremely good.
