Do you think spiders would be scary if they had less legs?

Why can't they be cuddly like rabbits?
No! Don't say that! The universe loves it when people say that. Next thing you know there'll be fluffy bunnys hiding giant toxic pincers in their ears, and they'll shoot web from their tail, with enough strength and quantity to capture human beings!

OT: I'd say that the face and the arse are what does it. I mean, the whole "8 eyes + venomous fangs", and some disproportionate bulb on the other that allows them to sit anywhere within three dimensional space (given that there is a roof).

Its the lack of emotions that gets me. They're like small robots made from living tissue.

Anyways. Heres a cute hornet.
Okay, first off, please use spoilers. Secondly, yes, that's something I didn't focus on enough: their eyes. Those emotionless eyes ... it is like looking into the eyes of someone who doesn't feel empathy, and is about to kill you just because s/he can. And thirdly, that hornet's eyes are not cute and cuddly. That thing is freaking scary as hell (Just a heads-up).

Well if they didn't have legs then I'm sure they would have wings...the last thing we need is flying spiders...

Personally it's the combination of weird body+face that freak me out.

Increase or decreasing its number of legs won't affect me too much, would still be terrified of them.

The pics of the above poster are the perfect example, those 2 with the freakish set of fangs in particular...my god why did you have to post that? Can't unsee :(

I was just thinking about spiders and I was wondering what made them so scary...they have eight legs, but so do scorpions and I like scorpions not scared of them at all. Spiders are venomous but so are most bugs and arachnids...fire ants are technically venomous too but I don't find them unnerving...So if your scared of spiders spiders what is it you find scary about them? Personally I just find the way they move creepy they are really fast.
Maybe you're just an arachnophobe. It's the venom that unnerves me. Much like mice, I'm not afraid of the creature itself, but the damage they could potentially cause. And since I can't tell spider species apart at a glance I casually crush them.

The legs aren't whats scary, it's the idea of something 1/25 my size able to kill me with a bite.
I have good news for you: The chances of that happening, even if you do get bitten, are extremely small, unless you're frail of health in some way, and even then it's not likely to kill you.
Well thank raptor jesus for that, i will probably still freak out if i see a poisonous spider though.

Let me put it this way-

If they had fewer legs, they could have two legs.
Then we would have a spider THAT WALKS LIKE A MAN.

'Nuff said.
I actually quite like this idea. I think I'd find a bipedal spider very amusing.
Anyway, I'd probably still find a spider creepy for the big eyes despite the number of legs it had.

If your healthy, with no weaknesses to insect venoms, IE, bee stings don't cause you to go into ainaflactic shock, there are very very few spiders that really pose a risk to your life. They only one that really springs to mind is the syndey funnel web. It's considered the deadlest of the spiders to a man, but even still deaths are extreamly rare, and almost non existent with promped medical care. Spiders, and even snakes for the most part, are not nearly as deadly as movies and some nature shows like to make them out to be.

There is no such thing as a "3 step snake". Fastest death from a snake bite on record is, like, 5 to 10 mins after the bite, but that was an *extreamly* unusual case were the fangs intersected with a vane in a such a way the venom got into the blood almost instently. Typically you've got round about 30 mins give or take before you start to feel any effects from the bite besides the local effets at the bite sorce. Meaning, for the most part, if you hurry, you can start to get medical care hopefullly well before you get into a dangerious situation.

But this is all in the case of a person with no bioloigical reactions to venoms outside the norm. all people are different and some react MUCH more strongly to venoms and toxens then others. I'm not saying you ever take a bite lightly, you need medical treatment asap, but the truth about your situation will help you make rational desisions should it ever happen. Don't panaic, just get yourself to a hospital. And you'll be fine 99.9% of the time.

they dont scare me at all, i quite like them actually. My guess is that they are scary to some due to their unpredictability. They can seem erratic (almost fixed the spelling of that with erotic).
They do a great job keeping down the numbers of smaller insects

The most scary aspect is to wake up at night to take a piss and see a fkng spider on fking web across all the fkng toilet room in front of your eyes as you're unzipping it. Maybe I exaggerate, but I'm scarred 4 life. Death to them all would not fix it.

Spiders to me are terrifying. I mean apart from the fact that they look terrifying but they're small enough to hide in places, ready to ambush you.

Not to mention they have 8 eyes, I mean seriously what kind of animal has 8 eyes?

With that being said, it doesn't help that I live in Australia and we have the biggest and most dangerous spiders on earth :S

There's a spider on my wall, it's moved about a metre in a week. Lazy bastard. I don't mind them at all to be honest, if only because they eat insects. 8 legs good, 6 legs bad.

Yeah. I let spiders live in my house, because I consider the 'eating insects' thing to be them paying rent. Unless it's a poisonous spider, then I catch it and throw it outside. But for the non-poisonous spiders like Daddy Long Legs, I let them crawl on me and stuff. No big deal. (Just for the record: All spiders are poisonous. Some just don't have strong enough poison or long enough fangs to affect a human. DLL fall into that category.)

It's clear that OP is secretly Roy Baty's wife and that we need to report them to the bounty hunters before the androids take over the world.

Spiders aren't scary because they have 8 legs. Spiders are scary because they're poisonous and jump on your face.

Me and my sister fed a wolf spider that lived in our window sill for a few weeks, live ants were his favourite. It was fun until he left though, I got a little sad. :(
