I tend not to go on what reviews say about games as reviews are a subjective thing. I will buy a game if it looks good to me, if it ends up sucking well then sucks to be me. If my friends suggest a good I will probably take their advice and purchase.

game spot gave the rts of the year to sims 3, freaking sims 3, i know people voted for it, but why the hell was sims 3 in a rts category, so no i don't, if they gave a game like that rts of the year it makes me loose all faith in them, assuming if i had any.

Gametrailers just made MW2 the 360s best game this year, the PS3s best game this year and the PCs best game this year.

Now the 360 I can understand; the PS3 I can't; and the PC?!

This is the game that basically took a big ol' shit on PC gamers and said "fuck you" to us - hardly the platform's game of the year.

I don't trust reviews from GameInformer or IGN.com. IGN is a big fat joke... have you ever read any of their "feature" articles? The actually had a write-up on why Batman shouldn't have had detective mode vision in Arkham Asylum, but the nail in the coffin was their "Top Ten Crime Movies of All Time" list... Point Break was their number one choice...!

I trust the Escapist (of course!) and Zero Punctuation is in fact quite honest if you know how to interpret his reviews. I've also found that Gamespot.com usually has pretty good reviews and I typically agree with them, but not always...

Sometimes. I'll read/watch them, but I won't take them literally. The Kane and Lynch incident made me weary of what some critics say.

I watch Video reviews to get a better idea of what the game is like, but I don't always trust their review scores.

It's usually more reliable to me to watch developer interviews or demos and gameplay videos, although sometimes even those make the game seem better than it really is.

I also get PC gamer magazine and usually I trust their scores.

I prefer to stick with my own opinions and just buy/rent a game that personally interests me. Although I will check those websites for any personal information that the game contains, or watch a trailer, so I can fully make up my mind.

The Sims is a RTS game if you think about it... I've always considered it a RTS game. Sure, you're not building armies or stuff like that, but you do have to manage your time and resources and think strategically...

Same here. Bashing on Gamespot is popular ever since the Kane and Lynch incident, but they do a lot of good stuff. I generally go there first for game reviews, and if the review seems too flowery or too nitpicky, I go to Gamerankings.com, which is kind of like Metacritic, except game-specific.

Yeah, Gamespot takes a lot of heat, but you could certainly do worse... the Kane & Lynch incident didn't do anything to help their image, either.

Gamerankings is good too, yes... Forgot to mention that one...

Well, when you follow one website for months and years, you begin to see patterns and mindsets, which editor favors which genre, which game, you begin to notice what is an opinion, what is a comment on a game feature, and what is just fueled by marketing and/or hype. You just know it. In this sense i do trust gamespot, whose member i am for something like 5 years now, but it doesnt come without activating a small part of my brain too. :)

I mainly just buy games based on how good they seem to me from gameplay videos etc. I don't trust reviews much, other than the ones I read in PC Gamer, and even then I base whether I think I will enjoy the game or not based on the actual review instead of the score at the end.

EDIT: Also, welcome to the Escapist!
Agree, I watch video reviews because they're always more informative and neutral. I don't care about the score I just want to see if I'll like it.

When I read reviews I listen less to the reviewer's overall impressions with the game and more to the little details mentioned. Such details give me a better idea of whether I'd like the game or not.

I used to. Now I just check them out to get a second opinion, or to see what they picked up that I didn't (NG2's combat being unbalanced for example, took me a while to figure that one out).

But nowadays, a review will get me to look into the game if nothing else, unless I don't care for the series (GTA, FF).
