Do you typically buy games when they come out?

No, probably because I can't afford them, but also because I'm not really gaining anything from getting them right away.
In fact, you are losing money by getting them right away. Full priced main game plus full priced DLC. A year or two later you can likely get a Game of the Year edition or atleast the main game will be cheaper.

If it's a game that I really want I probably will, but it's not guaranteed. Most of the games I have I bought second hand though so I have no problems waiting a while on a game.

I can afford them at $60 but I honestly don't have any reason to buy them when it comes out.

1. Longer I put off buying games, more power I have over the greedy game publishers.
2. Even if I bought games on release date, I won't be able to finish it before significant price drop. I often regret not putting off buying it until its much cheaper.
3. Games are often released with bugs and needs fixing and/or re-balancing.

How much do I want to play it? That's pretty much the only question I need to ask myself. Is the sixty dollar cost worth the game?

So far this year I've bought maybe three or so games full price on release date. I plan on at least two more.

Do people not remember that company don't make game that work. Still. Its the one constant in gaming.

I mean, did anyone think that games Witcher 3, Dark Souls 3 or Arkham Knight would launch working. I even did my normal wait a month and the Witcher still wasn't working well, and Arkham Knight will probably never work on PC.

But then I'm a bit gullible too, as I got Fallout 4 on launch. But then it didn't have as many glitches as Witcher 3 after a month.

I try not to. Day 1 releases are rife with bugs and missing content. I usually wait until the GOTY edition comes out before I buy it. Though, there are some exceptions (cd projekt red for example). Most of the big companies have lost the public trust when it comes to releasing quality on Day 1.

Almost never. Waiting for at least a week after launch allows me to see some reviews and hear if the game has major bugs or technical issues(*CoughAssasinsCreed:UnityCough*). Waiting longer allows the hype to die down a bit(and sometimes let the hype backlash do it's thing).

Of course, if I wait a year, I'll have a pretty good idea what DLC is going to be released/has been released and the game will likely be something like half the price of what it was on launch day.

And if I wait 2 years, I can get the Game of the Year Edition, which (hopefully) is patched and has all the big DLC included.

Not to say I haven't bought stuff at/near launch, but it's rare. Most of the time I'll wait and see. I have time, considering I still have a massive steam backlog to play through.

And if your name is Ubisoft or EA, you can bet I'm not buying any of your crap until it drops to around $20-25 on sale, if I bother to buy it at all. Maybe if you learn to stop trying to screw over your customers, I'll consider buying at full price again.

For me, almost never. The rare exceptions (usually less than one per year) are generally when a franchise I have deeply enjoyed in the past has a new installment coming out. The most recent one of those (and the only one for 2015) was Fallout 4. (Note that I am a strictly PC gamer, and so any series/franchises that are console-only are nonexistent to me.) Anything else waits until it gets cheap on Steam, usually when I can get the game and all of its DLC for under $20.

This year, it's looking like there will be two at-release (or near-release) purchases, but only because one of them was bought not so much because I wanted the game immediately but because I'm friends with its head writer, and so picking up The Division was kind of obligatory. ;)

The only other buy-at-release for me this year will probably be Deus Ex: Mankind Divided.

Only if I'm a die hard fanboy, such as in the case of warhammer games, or if I'm super into the genre, like say an Xcom like.

I got no problem paying full price for a product that I know I will super enjoy , 60$ might seem expensive... But if you end up playing the game a lot and loving it, you end up getting a good ratio of fun for each dollar spent.

Since I rarely go to the cinema or indulge myself in other things people typically spend on, I see that as a fair trade off.

Finally there's the bigger picture to consider..

I can't agree with this statement, plenty of games I've loved to bits have died or failed because they were niche and thus had a small market to begin with or other factors such as poor marketing.
And it's not just "good" games that end up getting cheaper or put into collections, I cannot think of ANY game that doesn't go down in price given enough time nor is being in a collection the sign of quality, there are plenty of shovelware collections out there.

I fully believe in voting with my wallet and showing there's a clear interest in stuff I like, by the time a game hits the bargain bit it's too late to send that signal. Look at Beyond Good and Evil, which most seem to think was amazing.. That game died hard because no one bought it, and no sudden outpouring of love years later once you could find that game on the cheap would suddenly convince its publishers it's viable. Maybe one day there will be a Beyond G & E 2, but until then, the series is dead because it didn't sell during its initial run.

Me neither, but I only get the good ones.

Nope. I'm perpetually years behind the cutting-edge of gaming. I'm still working my way through the libraries of past generations going all the way back to the SNES.

I don't have a ton to spend on games, hardware or software, so I have to wait, and I don't mind waiting: time weeds out the garbage.

If it is a game I am an invested in, or know that will be great, then yes. This doesn't happen all the time, but usually I pre-order a game based on a developer/publisher. Most things by Atlus, Platinum, Nintendo, or a niche Japanese company I'll buy or most likely reserve right out of the gate. Anything by a Capcom, EA, or Ubisoft I'll either not touch or wait for a huge price drop of at least $30.00. With how much publishers/developers are trying to screw over the consumers lately, a majority of games, specifically from the West, I always do my research before, during, and after the game is out.

Only if I'm decently hyped for it, which can be a bit random. I was turbo hype for Fallout 4 and bought it on launch. X-Com 2 I was like, eh I really liked the first one but I think I'll get the GOTY edition with all the DLC or whatever when it comes out in a year or two.

If there's relevant multiplayer in the game and my friends are getting into it, I will buy the game on launch.

Otherwise I'm quite whimsical. Some games do get launch sales and deals which can entice me into getting it early to play immediately as opposed to later.

Depends: Usually I wait, but if it is a franchise that I am excited about, I will usually jump on it. That being said, I am guilty of sometimes pre-ordering new IPs, and I usually get burnt. Most times, I will wait until either glowing reviews, or sales to sate my curiosity.

Exhibit A - I pre-ordered Halo 5 and loved it, but I also pre-ordered The Division, played it up until level 8, and haven't touched it since.

If it's a game I'm interested in I buy it at launch, though it's never 60 euro/dollars since 95% of all games I buy are on PC.

When it comes to consoles, I generally wait. Partly to avoid hype-induced quality blindness, but partly because I don't usually have all of the latest consoles. I generally wait until the next generation is announced before buying the last console or two of that generation, then I just buy whatever exclusives there were for it that I wanted. I actually only got my PS3 last year, and playing through its library is still my primary use of leisure time these days.

When it comes to handhelds I almost always wait because I'm cheap and don't want to pay $40 for a game.

Unfortunately, I have been burned by waiting too long for the price to drop. Some games that only had limited quantities produced have their price start bouncing back up after a while.
I may never get my hands on a copy of "Z.H.P. Unlosing Ranger vs. Darkdeath Evilman" now. The cheapest complete copy I can find is $54. I wish I had bought that $20 copy when I had the chance :(.

Generally, no. I rarely buy new games anymore and when I do, it is usually several months to a few years after release.

Most of the games I buy are new releases. I think I said in a similar thread something like "I have no self restraint" and I belive I'm still sticking to it. Actually, I'm gonna take a look at my steam profile right now and see how many new games I've paid for this year so far... *type type, click click* Oh, 40+ games.. this year, yeah, I think I should check myself in. :p

Cheers.

Typically? No... "Typically"? ...Yes? I mean, if I know that I'm going to love, let alone like, a game that I was going to buy anyway because I have the extra funds to do so in the first place, then it's a Day 1[-ish] purchase for sure... especially if it's a/the Collector's Edition...

Other than that, the more I'm using Steam instead of just "using" Steam, the more my "typically" stance veers towards "typically if I earned more [leisure] money"...
