So i was at work last night , and went to the washroom . The regular stall was out of order , so i had to use the handicap stall . And i realised , i tend to avoid using the handicap stalls in public washrooms whenever possible. Not because there is anything wrong with them obviously , but mostly out of respect in case a handicapped person wanted to use it .

Now , iv'e seen quite often people that are obviously not handicapped use these stalls . So i was wondering how many people actually avoid using them . Really i don't think there is a law for not using these specific stalls like there is for parking you car in a handicapped space . So my question to you escapists is:
do you use handicapped stall in public washrooms? And as an added bonus question , do you think it's wrong for a non handicapped person to use them?

I will if all the non-handicapped stalls are taken or nasty.
I don't have any preference for them over the non-handicapped stalls.

I prefer handicapped stalls. I like my space. There's only been one time where an actual handicapped person waited on me. That was awkward XD

I don't use public washrooms. I'll go into one to wash my hands, but outside of very, very rare circumstances, I just wait to return to my home/hotel room. In those rare circumstances, I'll use whichever one is cleanest.

You know I never really thought to much of it but I really shouldn't use those stalls unless I have to. I am going to start avoiding them more out of respect.

Only if the rest are taken. I'd rather shit in the sink than sit down on a public toilet anyway. Those things are nasty.

In England we tend to have entirely seperate restrooms for disabled people, so I've never used one. It'd be far more awkward trying to explain that than just using a disabled stall.

Only if no other seats are available (or clean enough) and I really really need to go right now.

Well I usually just enter the closest stall and use it if it's not messy, sometimes the stall I end up using happens to be the handicapped stall, sometimes the only available toilet is a handicapped one, and sometimes there is only a handicapped toilet in a washroom. The chances of a handicapped person needing to use the stall while I'm in there is pretty small anyways (it hasn't happened to me yet) and literally the worst case scenario is that they have to wait a few minutes or I do a quick wipe job and move to an adjacent stall.

It's not really that big a deal for somebody to use a handicapped washroom stall if they're not handicapped.

This really, although I'd like to add that besides the above, I'd also use a handicapped stall if the others are out of order or defunct in some way (no TP, door won't close, etc.).

Well rarely do I use public restrooms for crapping but if nobody else is around and I'm 101% sure no handicap people are going to need it then why not? As a matter of fact, I've never been in a restroom with a handicap person ever.

Only if every other stall is full. Then I consider myself handicapped by not being able to take a shit, and then use the handicapped stall. As others have pointed out though, I avoid using public toilets if at all possible.

Here is some insight as to why, courtesy of Cracked:

I tend to feel that while they're designed for handicapped use, they're not exclusively their,
so it's more like, if you're handicapped use this stall; rather than, if you're not handicapped don't use this stall.

they differ from parking because often there's only two stalls (one small, one large) so it doesn't make sense not to use them.

I like to use them when they're available, but I wont wait for one.

I don't use public bathrooms ever.
I have some odd fear about them for some reason and I won't ever use them with one exception.
Diarrhea.
Only time I have and will ever use one is if I am stricken with the above when I am away from home. All other times I hold it in tillI'm home, at a friend's house, or alone in an alleyway or something.

To answer the other question no I don't think its wrong for a non-hanicapped person to use the stall. If the rest are all taken up then what else are you supposed to do? Stand in the bathroom doing an awkward potty dance, praying to Cloacina that someone will finish quickly?
Screw that!

Of course I do, if it's free and clean. That is, I treat it just as if it were any other stall. I've never been in a situation where a handicapped person has been waiting on me. Besides, it only takes about a minute to use the toilet. Even if a handicapped person walks in I doubt I'll have ruined their day, and if I do they deserve it for allowing a half minute wait to ruin their day.

I avoid them as a rule. There have been exceptions when I couldn't or didn't want to use a regular stall for whatever reason.

For one, I never go poop in a public restroom. Screw that.

For two, I have basically NEVER seen a handicapped person on my university campus in the years I've been there, let alone seeing such a person go into a bathroom. There are also so many bathrooms at my university that the odds of me picking one that will be soon picked by a handicapped person in the minute that I take to pee is infinitesimal.

So in the rare instance that I need to use a stall to pee instead of a urinal, I pretty much pick randomly or based on bathroom etiquette. All a "handicapped" stall is is slightly larger, anyway, and most of the bathrooms I go to end up being multiple floors up too.

I tend to avoid using public restrooms as much as possible... especially the toilets. It's bad enough using the urinal in one of those places.
