Do you wish gaming was still "just for nerds"?

This.

Also, video-games will never reach its true potential if it doesn't outgrow its niche.

Ahaha... no. Duh. Gaming being "just for nerds" is not a good thing. Who'd honestly want that to happen?

Games are getting more and more accepted by the world as another entertainment/artistic medium, which wouldn't happen if it was still a niche thing. Plus, it's getting better and better as a social medium too, with lots of people ("cool" or not) gather together over the internet and have a great time doing multiplayer.

Also, this thread could do with a poll.

To be honest, I'd at least like to know what would happen if it went back to being a niche market.

I am one of the people who believe that gamings growing 'acceptance' is what caused this console generation to fall flat on it's face, suffocate, spontaniously combust, shit itself, contract Chrons Disease and bleed out while being trampled by a swarmimg mass of consumers...
I also think it's what caused all the recent shovelware, samey-ness and "brown".

I mean 2011 is almost half over, so far I count a grand total of TWO games that I've enjoyed (Namely Portal 2 and Minecraft).

I realise developers getting money and resources is supposed to be a good thing... I've just noticed most of the games that I think were great over the past couple of years have all been from small developers or sequels of the afforementioned.

No.

Fuck no.

I would rather not feel the need to hide the fact that I play video games.

I hope games become more widespread then they are now.

Nah, it's growing acceptance is fine.
I used to be seen as weird when I was younger because it just wasn't a ladylike to play games. "That's boy stuff, etc."

Now it's fine. I can talk to almost anyone about games. There should be diversity in the audience anyway.
I will admit that I feel annoyed when the girls that work at EB Games, Planet X, or Gamestop don't know what the hell they're talking about...

I'm not moved by anyone else's opinion either way.
But considering nerds [the ones at my school anyway] were terrible elitist unwashed people, no I don't.

I dislike like the growing acceptance only because it has led to games becoming more streamlined and dumbed down. But, as for actual nerdiness, it just depends on the game. For instance, call of duty is very mainstream and not all that nerdy. But, I would still consider a game like starcraft to be very nerdy

Probably a good 10-15 years ago I recall walking into an Electronics Boutique in the mall and started browsing the games. Soon after a mother, teenage daughter, and younger son walked into the store. I overheard the teenage girl say "Mom! I can't be seen in here. This is the nerd store!" I quietly chuckled to myself.

Nowadays these same girls are WORKING at EB/Gamestop. Gaming has become a more accepted form of entertainment over the years. Even cool people play video games now.

Do you wish it was still more of a niche hobby, or do you like its growing acceptance?
I've no idea when or how or IF this was ever a niche hobby or for a select group of people. This was always just something to do, to have fun with. Some people just take it all way too seriously. Although...

*Puts on a monocle*

I have found it rather amusing that games have been ruled as art. I never really had much stake in that sort of thing, but hey...we're all art critics now.

I'm, fine as long as I can stay away from idiots who buy madden every year and play nothing but online FPS games.
I can see a bit of an upside to this, without the Jock-gamer (sometimes refereed to as gramer) media groups wouldn't see gaming as nothing but "you just do nothing but shoot people" since game companies would not need to give into that demographic, they would release more games like the Persona series, Shadow of the Colossus, Okami and Braid, making the industry populated by more artsy games rather than brainless military shooters.
but then again. I just get nostalgic.
A better thing to hope for would that games learn to develop as a series more and completely erase the lines between gaming demographics, like if call of duty added more strategy elements, or Halo added a deep branching storyline with actual deep characters instead of one-dimensional archetypes.

I welcome the introduction of fresh blood into the fold! Muhahaha! in all seriousness though, I could care less about gaming becoming more mainstream. Only hipsters would have a problem with that :p

Hell no, I prefer that people are starting to accept it. It's nice when your hobby isn't stereotyped.

on the one hand i do miss the smug sense of satisfaction in knowing that i and a "elite" grope of people were the only people who really "got" gaming and had a badge of honer to prove it, however since gaming became more mainstream we did get something more. mainstream appeal means more funding for games thus we can get better quality games and more produced to enjoy.

I like the growing acceptance of gaming, yes, but I dislike the manufacturing of shite sequel after shite sequel, and the casual games, and the gimmick games.
They can go stuff it.

You know what? I never really knew it was supposed to be just for nerds until relatively recently. I mean when I was growing up all my friends were into video games, so as far as I knew video games were "cool." *shrug*

I love the fact that more people are getting into gaming, sure there'll probably be a slight increase in shovel-ware, but I'm willing to accept that, because I know that if new people were NOT being attracted to gaming, the medium could very easily die.

Yeah man, gaming is just becoming way too mainstream now, I'm like, totally into this game called Terraria right now. You've probably never heard of it. It's like Minecraft but less mainstream.
